Fire Elemental not buying it. He had reasons but that doesn’t excuse what Tony has done. Annie, open your eyes!

Technically, "I was a hot mess at the time" is a reason...

I like that Tony doesn't seem to be off the hook for his absenteeism. Annie's fire does not think having a good reason is enough to make up for his neglect and sudden re-entry into her life. Also Kat quotes Annie using the same phrase in gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1042

Thaaaaaat's your reaction here, Annie?
Thanks, Fire-Annie, for summing up my feelings here.

Well, like I said before, pretty much everyone on the planet thinks their reasons for whatever they do are gold... at least at the time they're doing whatever they're doing.

In my best Tony impression:
"Is is a reason?" "Well, I should think that..." "Let me restate, is it an excuse?" "...no."

So it seems that the audience and Antimony are taking away slightly different things from that last page.

Yeah, I think I'm closer to Team Donny than Team Annie here. I hesitate to throw around this word with all of its oft-debated connotations, but Annie really is expressing similar things to what victims of *whispers* abuse *whispers* say about their families/significant others/etc.
I hope the elemental and she have a nice chat about these revelations in the coming pages.

"When you know what's up but you're still angry", a vine by Annie and #FireAnnie. Fire Annie is very well-spoken.

Anybody interested in pondering the idea that, in a sense, that is also Surma who is enraged by Annie's statement?
Because to me that's one of the most interesting things about this whole scene.

[FIRE ELEMENTAL STRONGLY DISAGREES]
Everybody has reasons, but reasons are not always excuses.

If you want a more "Oh snap" reaction to this page: "Tony don't got to make excuses for his behaviour 'coz Annie does it for him."
Zinnnnng.

So, who wants to see fire Annie beating non fire Annie over the head with a stick until she sees reason? I know I do!

I'm still withholding judgement on the whole abuse thing but if you want to avoid the loaded word I think it can be said that Antimony has been conditioned to accept this sort of treatment from her father. Reasonably certain Anthony is a dick, though. If anyone's interested I believe I can logically prove it using a number of appropriate definitions from urbandictionary.

I just don't see it as Surma. I don't think anything recognizable as "Surma" is in the fire elemental aspect of Annie other than what parts of Surma are in Annie across the board (that is, Annie is Surma's daughter and thus you can see in Annie how Surma raised her and what genes she passed on). Sure, the "flame" passed from mother to daughter, but there's nothing that says it's Surma's Personality or Memories or Soul or anything other than the life spark. It's Annie that is angry with Annie. I feel the story and mythos are stronger for that.

I hope this is the part where Annie finally accepts that her father was in the wrong. But first she sort of has to take Fire Annie's point of view into account, and their relationship is a bit strained right now. Girls gotta talk it out, figure out how to best express.

I also note the chapter hasn't quite finished.

Not "we have to help him" or "I don't know what to do" but automatic defense - which reassures her because it means her father doesn't hate her, and which also maintains a very unhealthy relationship. Hopefully Non-Fire Annie's and Fire-Annie's conflicting emotions and views will blend again and she'll cry her heart out before seeking help, having seen that the Robot Life is not a good life? It immediately struck me as strange, but I couldn't elucidate why. Thanks!

[FIRE ELEMENTAL STRONGLY DISAGREES] Everybody has reasons, but reasons are not always excuses. I'd make a [disagreement intensifies] gif but I'm on an ancient netbook that hates everything. *insert the idea of that gif here*

I'll keep looking.

Having a serious inner conflict isn't good for you. Having one that is stoked by an internal fire elemental may lead to heartburn or things around you bursting into flame.

Don't worry, I speak Fire Elemental. Speech bubbles for the last two panels read, in order: "... Seriously?" and "SERIOUSLY?!"

Tom's writing, as always, surprises and gives more to think about.
This is a curious inner conversation actually. The part of Annie that is disconnected from her emotions says this. It's easier to pretend everything is fine and going to be fine, when you've cut off the emotional reactions.
This page makes my sig even more appropriate.
