I'm between two as my single favourite; which one I like best depends on their storylines at each moment. Gunnerkrigg Court is one of them, and the one I unreservedly recommend to anyone who asks. The other is a bit more strange and could put people off, but I really think it's a diamond if you stick with it: El Goonish Shive.

Easy one, Gunnerkrigg Court is by far the best comic I've read on the web, and not one that has many competitors off of it, either.
There's a couple really great runners up though: Sister Claire (which has gotten pretty crazy lately), Order of the Stick and Kill Six Billion Demons, which I only found a month or so ago, but has gorgeous art and a completely insane premise.
Only comic I can think of that beats out Gunnerkrigg is Calvin and Hobbes, which is possibly my all time favourite piece of literature.

(Blah, blah, furry character disclaimer, blah blah.) It feels very much like C&H once you get into the middle of it, and actually covers some issues much better imho - like the benefits of standing out of a crowd. I like KSBD's story, but it moves so slow, and I personally dislike the art style of Allison in particular (everyone else looks fine, the artist just seems not to be able to draw humans very well). If you like it, you might like Demon's Mirror. And OOTS is fantastic. I wonder how long we'll have to wait for strip 1000...

1. Gunnerkrigg Court and Sandra and Woo. (Both are very good at Storytelling, with Gunnerkrigg handling a complex fantasy narrative and Sandra and Woo handling a more straight forward but still enjoyable story.) 2. Final Fantasy VII the Sevening (It makes me laugh as an FFVII fan) 3. Dangerously Chloe ( A guilty pleasure I started reading in late high school and its interesting enough for the odd five minutes twice a week.) 4. Ow my Sanity! - (oh how I wish it would update....) I'm not counting manga translations that are released online as it would break the post through sheer magnitude alone. Thank you for mentioning FFVII, I didn't know this existed and now I have a new binge. I love the merciless dialog/plot criticism and constant breaking of the 4th wall.

Sinfest is probably the webcomic I most strongly associate with stylistic brilliance. I just can't be bothered to follow it.

You're welcome Even though the writer may hack the game to bits he clearly loves it and that just makes the jokes he comes up with so much better.

If you like it, you might like Demon's Mirror. And OOTS is fantastic. I wonder how long we'll have to wait for strip 1000... I've tried reading Ozy and Millie before, and while I liked it, I didn't really get too far in. It doesn't really stand out very much as its own thing, I think, at least not at the beginning. It was decently fun and quirky though, so with your word that it gains ground later on, I can definitely see giving it another shot. With KSDB I really feel quite differently too. I've no idea if the actual story is going to be any good yet, because I don't feel like what we've seen so far has been anything but a teaser and a ton of worldbuilding, though that's certainly also really interesting (and will hopefully keep being so, and not become riddled with inconsitencies and ridiculousness). What really gets me all hot and bothered about this comic though is the art, it's just so off the rails fucking crazy and imaginative and all the character designs are spot on, including Allison's, in my opinion :^) I'm really, REALLY excited to see where this one goes, once it really gets rolling. This Demon's Mirror thing is pretty fun so far (Bit less than 100 pages in now). The story is kind of a giant mess, and I'm not really sure if anything's really happening at all... Regardless, it's fun! Also the 1000th OotS page is out and it's great! And climactic! And another bloody cliff-hanger! Fuck.

Just popping in for an opinion dump. Read the whole thing. It's very cute and can be very humorous at times, but I don't associate it with the same brilliant commentary as Calvin and Hobbes. However, my perspective on C&H may be atypical - I was "reading" them long before I could get most of the jokes. Maybe I'll edit this section later. I love the early comics, but once the author stopped taking the sarcastic approach to heavy topics it stopped being nearly as funny. If he had just started avoiding those heavy topics I would be fine with it, but these days it just comes across as preachy. They posted that!? *hurries over to Order of the Stick*
oh, gonna add a recommendation for Freefall. Probably tied for favorite webcomic with Gunnerkrigg, although others might have more of a chance if I hadn't worn them out. I also read S&W, Gaia, Paranatural, Questionable Content, Snow by Night (sporadically, it's nothing special as webcomics go), XKCD and of course Order of the Stick.

That GC is a favorite of mine is a given, but aside from that I am currently really in love with Vattu (by the author of rice boy and a few others). I was slow to like it (the first few pages I wasn't all that enthusiastic) but around page 100 I could no longer stop reading. It's incredible how the author can convey feelings despite drawing solely non-human beings. I love the characters and the depth of the story.

What is you favourite webcomic? Mine is Gunnerkrigg Court, I hail it as a masterpiece, the best of all time, but maybe that's just me. So I thought I could get other opinions from people who have read GKC. Mine is Gunnerkrigg Court und I'm möre Tröö than you!!!1 Seriously, though, it rolls to the level of a Black Mitol forum, or something. But thanks for a good laugh.
