And this is why whoever said "I'm not even gonna try to guess" was right. I was not expecting this to happen at all! I love this comic. It seems appropriate that the only time one of my predictions is right is when it's not a prediction

One good sign is Anne seems happy in the middle pannel, and there is no one around to judge her and make her act that way.
This is no front for dad, she is really happy here, if only a little.

Annie's face in panel four is the happiest we have seen her in months (our time). Which makes it the best page of Gunnerkrigg Court I have read in months also. Honestly I am deeply relieved and delighted to see the comic moving in ANY new direction, especially a happy or at least emotive Annie. Whatever it is, I suspect it will be given full page treatment, and an end of chapter symbol. You called it and I second that motion! I have no guesses to add as to who/what is coming down now. But this is going to be good.

Tch, you guys are all wrong. It's obviously this guy paying a visit. Or, the spectral form of the REAL Anthony Carver descends from where his bones have been stored in the ceiling tiles to congratulate his daughter on her acting and continue to plan with her to displace the evil doppelgänger which, having first murdered the good surgeon, is now masquerading as him and being an all round jerk. Or, it is the spirit of Surma, who has returned from the Other Side by hitching a ride on Annie when she dropped Mort off. She, like pretty much everyone else in the world, wants to know what exactly Anthony has been up to after her death and is investigating this by occupying Annie's body when she is with her father. This has the dual bonus of Annie being shielded from her father's harshness and of Surma being able to pick Anthony's brain without him realising it, because she likely knows him much better than Annie and therefore knows how and what questions to ask. ----- I... just can't come up with anything sane, can I?

I suspect that Jones wanted an experience (remember when she wanted to experience the bombs) and has taken Annie's place, and it is Annie who will come down. But then the theory doesn't quite work. I can't imagine Annie being OK with this and missing the chance to interact with her father. Here's Annie and Jones together in similar poses. Jones' nose is nearly straight, while Annie's has a slight curve to it. Also, Jones' eyes are rather almond shaped, while Annie's eyes are pretty much round. As amusing as this would be, I'm afraid I can't credit it. On the other hand, I do wonder if Annie cut her hair to mimic Jones stoic nature.

Not someone else. Just herself, minus her mind, like here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=983 Red and the rest of her class were perfectly able to take notes, react to their environment, while their etheric self was jumping around somewhere else.
Good points, I agree. But to what purpose? Why would Annie dissociate herself like that? And giving anything less that her full attention to her Father and Kat, a potentially volatile situation, seems not only rude but dangerous. And again and again, To what purpose? I'm not actually disagreeing here; I have similar objections to even my own proposals. If I'm right (and that's a big if) then she may be doing it because she is so unable to deal with reality that she will use any means to run from it. In which case she is way beyond concepts like rude or dangerous. In which case the situation is pretty bad, smile or not. Another potential bad situation is that there is something going on here directly and willingly caused by her father. But it seems she is hiding it, so... Probably not. What I don't think will happen is some form of sneaking together with Kat. I feel that it's nearly as hard to deal with Kat than with her dad right now for Annie, because of the cheating, because of renard, because Kat is antagonizing her father... Too many expectations.

I think I have this figured out... The perspective...the awkward descent path...her smile...IT ALL MAKES SENSE.

... Wow, I'm glad this one wasn't a Friday comic. The actual Friday comic didn't turn out any less cliffhangery I'm afraid.

It does raise a lot of new questions more than it solves anything. You make it sound like it actually answers some questions :s the only question it answered was the question raised 1 page before ("what's coming down?")
