The only being in this story that I can Annie might need to be hiding is...Renard.
The plushie--and its cute puppy version--are but fragments of The True Renard.
Not that Renard has ever struck me as being all that arboreal, and the descent seems odd...but who else does Annie need to hide?

My thought as of right now is that Annie actually let something else into her body, some etheric being perhaps, to let it take care of her shit for her while she left to do other things or to escape Anthony. One thing is for sure with this page: Tom is a lovable jackass. yep. What if Annie has in fact been Koyote? Oh boy, oh boy!

I don't see what it would accomplish for the Annie we see to have not been the Real Annie. Can't really believe she'd trust anyone, or anything, else with her Father or Kat. And for what? Not someone else. Just herself, minus her mind, like here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=983 Red and the rest of her class were perfectly able to take notes, react to their environment, while their etheric self was jumping around somewhere else.
Good points, I agree. But to what purpose? Why would Annie dissociate herself like that? And giving anything less that her full attention to her Father and Kat, a potentially volatile situation, seems not only rude but dangerous. And again and again, To what purpose? I'm not actually disagreeing here; I have similar objections to even my own proposals.

My mind is seven shades of boggled right now.
I like the idea of Annie using the ether as a coping mechanism, but surely she wouldn't need to call herself down from the ceiling? Shes still the same person and would have enough awareness on both ends to know where her body is.
That swooping-down-from-the-ceiling motion also strikes me as being very non-etheric.

Maybe it's just the ceiling that is coming down?

Maybe it's just the ceiling that is coming down? Plot twist: the room itself is alive, and fulfills the same role as Lindsey via the ceiling.

Shes still the same person and would have enough awareness on both ends to know where her body is. It's possible she's not alone. The thing I don't like about the theory is that invisible people wouldn't have to hide from Anthony but they might just be floating around on the ceiling because it's fun. That swooping-down-from-the-ceiling motion also strikes me as being very non-etheric. Agree. That's what made me think, "Jack." Also whatever he/she/it is isn't coming down in front of her, but approaching close from the side... kinda intimate-like...

Annie is calling out to Rey as she usually does when she gets home. Rey is not there. Annie is sad.

I am at a loss here. Since I can't guess what it might be, I shall instead deduce what it likely isn't. It wouldn't be her etheric self because Annie wouldn't need tot ell her etheric self to descend. Psychopomps don't interfere with the living. Coyote and Ysengrin wouldn't be inside the Court and likely wouldn't accept hiding on the ceiling while Annie went out. Both too prideful. I would say Mort, but he's gone into the ether already. She says it as if she waiting for a clear coast as well. That also puts doubt on it being an etheric projection of any sort. The ether is invisible to normal people and I doubt someone like Tony would be able to see it anyway. Not Rey as he was ignorant as to her condition and needed Kat to inform him. Zimmy and Gamma while on good terms with Annie, don't seem the type to actively interfere. Jack and Jenny likewise are probably unaware of what happened. Sneaking about also doesn't seem like Jones. She's subtle in her own ways but not in a stealthy manner. I think it's perhaps a completely new character. Someone from her new class. If not, then I'm actually thinking maybe she's completely snapped to be honest. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the visual affect back in The Tree. The one vaguely reminiscent of the bone fingers. www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1503This si the only way I can see it as etheric Annie: Now we know Annie willing cut her own hair. She says her father didn't make her do it. This cutting is done off screen. WE also know Annie's hair is what attaches her to her physical body when she goes into the ether. What if Annie her self has severed her etheric form from her physical form and the hair separation is symbolic of that? WE do know Annie has taken some anti-Tony counter measures off screen. Passing Rey to Kat for example. IF the link has been severed, it might explain why she needs to verbally call out.

... You never talk to yourself out loud ?... I do a lot. So it does not seem so odd to me that she would be calling her self (the space between the words is on purpose... *wink wink nudge nudge*) from the ceilling, not that she needs it to make her etheric self descend, but only because she wants to. Right ?...
So next page, I place my bet on etheric Annie descending slowly, long flamboyant hair behind her, to hug bodystrong Annie and merge into each other.
The reason why she would split ? To go see Rey while in etheric form, of course !!!
Edit : Maybe Annie has done the ONE thing Tony is actively trying to do for years : separating the fire elemental from the human, but not physically ; etherically ! The flamboyant self, etheric, joyful, the Annie we learned to discover and love, is now only etherical, bodyless like Rey, and the Annie we've seen for the last pages is what remains, the human shell with a mere shadow of Annie's personnality !

What if what wasn't on off-handed comment? Which comment are we talking about here? "You know, I think has has a thing for you..." Oh. Uh. OK. I very much doubt that. EDIT: I'm sorry, this comes across as a bit rude. Wasn't intended as such, I was just legitimately very taken aback. I'd like it to be Jack lowering from the ceiling, by virtue of Jenny's powers. I'd like to see them two in action again.

Guess 1: Shadow 2: The somber fairy friend of the jackalope 3: The etheric manifestation of Annie, as fire sprite maybe.

I'm still of the opinion that, whoever is coming down, they're very real and someone Annie knows well. So not an etheric being / manifestation, in my books.
I already have my conspiratorial guess as to whom it might be, but other than that, it could be literally anyone.

Is it just me or she is not hunched anymore? I hope I'm not seeing things but the new short-haired Antimony has always seemed a bit hunched forward however in the last few panels of this strip she seems straighter? Annie definitely goes from looking like she is 12 years old in panel four to looking like an adult in the last panel. An adult who looks a lot like Jones.

I just recalled this chapter: www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=981 The Faeries were perfectly able to let their etheric projections party the entire time while the rest of them was being a good girl on the school bench. No reason why Annie couldn't master that as a coping mechanism.
EDIT: might that be the reason why she cut her hair? to help cut herself off herself? That's my first guess too - etheric fairy party! Ok, it was my second guess after quoting "In Moria, in Khazad-dum, a Shadow lies upon his tomb". Better guess though.

Pet monstercam.
Would be somewhat odd if it's something that lets Annie sidestep the Anthony situation; that doesn't seem like what the last two chapters have been building towards.

The real Annie descends from the rafters to congratulate her doppelganger on a job well done! This was kinda where my mind went. Annie has developed her dissociation into depersonalization; she has split her consciousness into two parts and is now merging them again... *cough*cough* It would actually be kind of an elegant solution to her problem. Mindless zombie in public, just like daddy wants it, while her etheric half is goofing off at home.

Who's up there? Who's up there??!!!
Renard? Zimmy? The fairies? Someone from the woods?
I think Mr Siddell specialises in throwing people for a loop. Did anyone else hear the 'Jaws' theme playing for this page?

Oho! What does this all mean?
We don't know, of course. A number of interesting theories have been put forward. Personally, I'm imagining a great swathe of Annie's hair coming down to reattach itself.
Whatever it is, I suspect it will be given full page treatment, and an end of chapter symbol.

... Wow, I'm glad this one wasn't a Friday comic. The idea of a self-division between "cold Annie" and "fiery Annie" is tempting, but she did seem joyful when she called, so that won't do too well. City Face would be a better idea, probably the most probable solution. But does anyone think the one "sneaking" into Annie's romm could very well be Coyote himself (because he is very powerful, of course) ? Or one of Annie's forest friends ?

The real Annie descends from the rafters to congratulate her doppelganger on a job well done! Kat had constructed a robotic father-defying device!

Panel three, together with watching her father walk away before stepping inside: Annie is relieved to be away from him. That's a good sign.
I want this cliffhanger to be over asap for a very different reason than normal. Rather than anxious, I am happy for what comes next! And I did not see that emotion coming, not in this chapter.
Also, EVERYONE'S predictions about this page were wrong. (Does that happen often?)

WE'RE IN FOR SOMETHING GOOOOOOOD ON FRIDAY! I, for one, agree. Specifically, it looks like we're in for a cliffhanger that trumps this whole chapter. The return of Jack in this manner would make a nice twist ending for a chapter titled "Sneak." Yeah. But this won't make much sense. Unless "Anthony" is found to be lacking life signs and Jack helps to trace the waldo's connection back. In which case Annie is not really meek, desperate or even out of character, but very much on her usual track, except constant struggle to keep any hint of old good steel-boiling fury under the lid... until whoever happens to be responsible for this insult is both known with certainty and well in range, that is. Spider Jones, Spider Jones... It does seem like a spider going down its thread, doesn't it? My first thought was Anansi, for some reason. Not really, the PoV entity is spiraling around Annie while descending. Since use of ether-sight suggests that the entity is magical... my guesses, in order of descending likelihood: 1) non-corporeal - most likely either the next kid on Mort's old post or a visitor from Foley; 2) fairy; 3) Sky Watcher (now this would be some really weird turn). Would Shadow be able to go in that room? Bright light from all directions, and all? Ha, good point. This could be a reason to choose this place. Oh. I also suddenly realized that we don't know in which House Annie is now. Poor kid. She has an imaginary friend now. But I'm happy something not depressing seems to be happening. But... she had an imaginary friend long ago. Now she has an imaginary boss, remember? That would be triple-awesome, but ultra-unlikely. Even if the pigeon recognizes her address, what's with closed eyes?.. Unless this bird is possessed.
