It might be a homebrew body, not the original one.

Shame on us for not remembering that humans can be weird too! It's like the most obvious thing! Um … she didn't say she was human. Non-humans can be from Cardiff too! … sheesh, for an introvert, even a recovering one, Annie sure is making a habit of presumptive questions, isn't she?

DING! The Foot-in-Mouth face-off begins...
Socially Awkward Annie starts off with a Presumptuous Question, perhaps she is trying to gauge her challenger's reaction.
Snake responds with an Unexpected Response. Either Snake is trying to knock Annie off her game, or Snake has no idea the match has begun.
DING! DING! That ends round one...

I don't think she's lying about being from Cardiff, i've been running with the idea that doing the ritual or dealing in the transfer has changed her body over time.

Not a forest animal, has snakey eyes and buck teeth... They're a Jabberwock! =D Not a *former* animal. Nothing said about forest animal. (Although not from Gillitie Wood, as there are rules about animals coming to the Court from that specific forest. There are other forests in Britain.)

Since it was brought up: I don't think genetic manipulation is inherently evil, but like nuclear technology, and planes, and fireworks, it's only a matter of time before it's used as a weapon. Someone is probably going to make an extremely potent disease along with a vaccine, and use them to control the world. Same with personal computers, the internet, and drones. Think of the devastation that bombers caused in WWII, Vietnam, and other conflicts, and then realize that drones which require no pilot are several orders of magnitude cheaper than bombers and fighter jets. The relative freedom and prosperity that westerners enjoy right now is the exception of history - not the rule. I think it's only natural that it should end. I'm not fun at parties It depends on the party. I giggled. I guess we'll find out Friday, if se was originally human, or if se comes with a backstory like Jones. It would be hilarious, if Tom has Lizard start on a long story like Jones, only to be cut short by Annie. Of course, the backstory could be Lizard just hanging out in Cardiff. Se'd be buying groceries in one panel, riding the bus on another. No hijinks ensue.

Didn't she already state that she was a former animal before Annie asked the question? Third panel, right? I thought the same thing for a moment there, but (s)he is actually talking about the bunny.

It just dawned me that even Annie isn't sure if the snake person is male or female, since she's asking him/her whether s/he was an animal or a fairy.

Maybe this person hasn't changed body, like the Dryad who married the gardener. Supernatural creatures *do* live at the Court (remember Basil, also).

*checks forums*Hey, the new comic has two pages of discussion already. Wonder what's got them all in a tizzy. *checks webcomics several hours later*Oh, hahahahaha, nice. PS, I notice pretty much everyone has silently switched over to "she" now that it seems we're not dealing with a former Forest denizen. I fully expect the next page to include "I'm also agender!" for maximum confusion/drama.

Hmm, maybe this is her way of stealthily inquiring about this person's gender, rather than being an honest question about their past. And that's a level of subtlety as yet unheard of from Annie. She really is trying. The only welsh mythological creature that fits is the afanc. Actually only the long body and the beaver like incisors look like anything I found, maybe Tom has actually met one in Cardiff. Annie can test if it really is one by singing for him. He should then fall asleep with his head on her lap. Problem is this might work with a lot of creatures, mythological or otherwise.

Rereading this page, I'm struck by how tall (s)he is. If we assume Annie/Smitty to be 5 feet tall (not unreasonable; I'm sure further research could be done), (s)he's at least between 7 and 8. One might say unnaturally tall and lithe, like a snake would be. Or apparently, a person from Cardiff might be.

A bit over 7' I'd say, if Annie's ~5'.

I'd thought that was some kind of access hatch...thing. Even without the lines it looks about as tall as Rey. And in the sixth panel of that page, it looks like the door is more'n 2x Rey's height. (I'm too lazy to deal with that extreme of perspective)

I was going to assume it's a Brit in-joke, but search gives "Cardiff University Cobras", for what it's worth. Didn't she already state that she was a former animal before Annie asked the question? The attendant is probably trolling her for not paying attention. I thought he said he was a former fairy. Also, a lot of European nobility (including Plantagenets) descended from shapeshifting snake-folk (Melusine, who may or may not be a linnorm depending on the version). I have no idea whether it's related to Cardiff, however. Not a forest animal, has snakey eyes and buck teeth... They're a Jabberwock! =D But... Jabberwock is a forest animal - as mentioned in the famous poem, it feels at home in tulgey wood. I'd thought that was some kind of access hatch...thing. Even without the lines it looks about as tall as Rey. And in the sixth panel of that page, it looks like the door is more'n 2x Rey's height. It's obviously a different door.

I was going to assume it's a Brit in-joke, but search gives "Cardiff University Cobras", for what it's worth. Hmm unlikely unless Tom is a Cardiff Alumni. University sports isn't really a big thing in the UK, and we only have 2 native species of snake and I think 1-2 lizards anyway. The area that's usually referred to jokingly as the stereotypical inbred 'weird looking people' area is Norfolk anyway, not Wales.

Yeah, I had initially assumed that this was a British joke that I didn't get, but now I'm just confused.

An afanc would make sense if the humidity and heat makes it hard for normal humans to breathe.

It's obviously a different door. Well, since access hatch != door, yeah. The hatch in the second panel isn't the door that's in the sixth panel. Since I called them two different things, I didn't think I would have to super clearly differentiate them. Learn something new everyday!
