I wonder how Lindsey will participate in this cruise? She's too big to fit aboard ship, even if she could breathe air, and if not the tank for water would be even bigger. While she's clearly at home in the water I'm not sure she can stay above the ocean floor. Well, she can rise up from the moon pool, so presumably she can swim somehow. Though I guess she could only be present ethereally and/or through an Internet connection. There may be underwater stairs or a ramp beneath the moon pool, although I suppose there is that scene where she rises up out of the water outside the dorms... Also, ahwilliampenn, welcome to the forums and all, but you just duplicate posted.

I made this guess on /r/gunnerkrigg... I was doubtful, but it seemed to make the most sense, since it's been so many chapters since the last summer (but it feels like not very much time has passed at all! Maybe because Tom hasn't showed Annie in a classroom setting in quite a while? And the homework thing never got addressed... I wonder if she's still copying from Kat, and if that's ever going to come to a head).
Super excited for this chapter. We're probably going to see a lot of characters outside of their regular settings.

I'm guessing that for a place like the court, Lindsey shouldn't have any real problems getting out of the tank and into (assumed) ocean/lake/whatever. It cuts the Earth, not the Sea hahahah I like this speculation... I think it's sharp enough that it could cut through water, Moses-style. A cutaway view of the ocean would be thrilling, especially with Tom's art. At least that's my fantasy! With her luck, she'll end up dropping it on the deck and splitting the ship in half Titanic-style to the tune of Coyote's laughter. Or something like that. ...hope Rey still has it safe.

I think the education style has changed. We don't really see anyone in the classroom anymore. It might just be more independent and personalized. We see Kat in her workshop, Paz with the animals, Annie in the forest, etc. It seems like the kids are their own apprentices, rather than anyone's students.

I'm not sure that's true, because the same students went to class before while still doing these side project things. But I guess I don't really have any proof otherwise. I personally think Tom knows as they grow and as many story threads develop and mature (as the story as a whole does), showing them outside of the classroom setting is much more interesting to the viewer.

She probably just swims along with the ship, or maybe her job made her enough money to buy a nice submarine. They need her; she's an accredited couples therapist. We're probably going to see a lot of characters outside of their regular settings. And maybe new characters.

Just thought of two other hopes for this chapter. Without school uniforms I hope to learn bout peoples' personalities based on how they dress. I also hope that Paz brings some adorable animal along for company and that maybe Kat brings a robot.

Are tic-tocs adorable though? I was thinking one of the mice. Also, I kind of want Kat to bring box-bot.

I don't think this is a simulation. For one they're not wearing the spacemonauts suits, which are (presumably) needed to be able to feel things in the simulation. We've seen that you can enter a simulation without them, but it would be a rather lame cruise if you can't even touch anything. Also some of the girls have luggage with them. There's no point in burden yourself with that in a simulation. Agreed completely. Also, if this was a simulation the girls would see it all in black & white. There is no color in the simulations. Yep, this looks to be the real deal! A cruise that will actually take place outside the court or forest! I am pretty excited for this chapter.

Well, I suppose people suggesting a holiday chapter do deserve some cookies. I think we're in for some cruise ship etheric shenanigans rather than some cruise ship tragedy shenanigans.
If it should be the latter, then I think it would be a chapter of how our genre savvy students deal with such "tragedies" not unlike the camping trip some time ago.
Actually, yeah, I'd like to see how they would all respond. Taking over the ship crew and averting/navigating through the disaster, I imagine, like the future butt kickers they all are. Annie not quite uninvolved in welding, Katerina not quite uninvolved with reprogramming some not-exactly-unimportant software found on the ship, Willsbury not quite getting uninvolved with a sudden romantic epic, etc.
So I wouldn't be surprised if it would be, once again, staged by the Court as some test. As others postulated before[citation needed], the students of Gunnerkrigg might be expected to become "the experts".

To play the devil's advocate, I think it's theoretically still possible (while perhaps unlikely) that the current scene happens in the Court. After all, it's a massive place. And for example, there was the large lake that featured prominently the Power Station sub plot; there could be other bodies of water of note in the Court. But I admit this scene really doesn't feel like the Court. (Except if the cruiser turns out to be empty except for the year 9 students, which would fit the "desolated giant human structures and tech" theme. However, there seems to be quite a lot people in the background.)

But I can absolutely believe that the court has a port of some kind. A sea of buildings, people and robots that size needs to get materials and food from somewhere (and quite a lot of the stuff). Likewise, the Court must produce things in order to buy the materials it needs, (and we know they assisted with the war effort, perhaps in a manufacturing capacity). I would assume that at some point, ships were how they obtained said materials since the court likely predates trains and cars, and horses are only able to pull so much weight.

House on fire. Firemen scrambling on rooftops. Kinda surreal being just fine maybe 30 metres away from inferno; love the stone walls.

I do hope we get to see Paz talking with sea life! Her ability has not been much explored in a long time!

I do hope we get to see Paz talking with sea life! Her ability has not been much explored in a long time! Hell, we've only seen it in effect once, and not in all that plot significant context. I'm not sure if her ability is plot relevant at all, or just a quirk.

Finally, the cruise ship chapter. Maybe now we can shed some light on where the hell the Court actually is. Plot twist: the Court is actually situated in Gibraltar and everyone's just about to have a nice cruise around the Med. It explains the large Greek mythology section of the library and the presence of someone who speaks Spanish. It has a built up area and a nature reserve. It even has a little cross border tension. I am sure that the minor plot problems (Annan waters) can be easily retconned.

The minotaur has a time share, so it could be as far away from greece as it wants to. Also, the court takes people from all over. Mostly Britain but I don't see why there can't be people from Poland and Spain. It's not like they couldn't be immigrants who came to Britain before the court anyway.

I probably should have mentioned that I was being deliberately silly in that post (although I probably misjudged it). None of those points are in any way likely to be correct.
I like the thinking in Omnium's post about the port. They are either close to somewhere that'd allow easy trade (river or ocean), or they managed to use their original resources to become completely self sufficient.
Also, do people think that it is only Annie's year that are on the cruise? That looks like an awfully big boat for a single year group.

I went on a cruise once, but all I did was drink and marathon read the Mistborn series.
Hopefully the cast has some idea of what one is supposed to do on a ship.

Also, do people think that it is only Annie's year that are on the cruise? That looks like an awfully big boat for a single year group. I have been wondering about that. We know from the year 7 dorms that each of the four houses could hold at most up to 60 students (30 male, 30 female). So that gives a maximum of 240 kids in Antimony's year. A really big cruise liner like... the Costa Concordia (since there has been speculations of catastrophe) could hold 20 times that many people, passengers and crew. This cruise ship does seem rather smaller, maybe half that size or less, but still should easily hold a thousand. And if it is all students moving into year 10, will that even include the Foley students? Red didn't seem to know what a summer holiday was. If not, that cuts the numbers down a bit. I am guessing it is going to include some of the higher year classes too? So we might see Parley and Smitty after all.

I agree with Dedalo, Court citizens probably feel uncomfortable in lodgings that are filled to their capacity.
