Why can't Mort come? Why should this be personal matters for Annie?

That would make sense if it were Jones who had to sign off on his retirement.
But I'm just as stumped as the rest of you as to what is so personal about it. I'll pitch a wild gas and say they've got Morty's mangled body preserved somewhere and that's part of becoming a ghost, so they don't want him seeing that just before he moves on.

Does anyone else want to bet that Mort's "job" will turn out to be exactly what I predicted - just a way of keeping a kid ghost occupied and happy until he was ready to Move On?
The "personal business" is just an excuse so that Mort won't find out that his "job" was totally made-up, so his feelings won't be hurt.

It wouldn't be fair to Mort to let him find out he not taken seriously, after telling him he was doing something "important". He was important to Annie and Kat, of course. |

I think she's saying it to both Annie and Mort. Ankou is really freaking her out, so she's thrilled at getting to stay behind/away from him.
I also think the personal business is gonna be Ankou making sure Annie knows the ropes, since we just saw last chapter that there're things that can be done that Annie didn't know about. It might involve Mort, but will be general "take people to the ether" talk. (Mostly because I will be sad if it was just busy work as opposed to the important business of scaring people/ether managing.)

"No need to go anywhere with your friend, there!" translates to "Ankou is freaking me the FLIP out, and if Mort and I have to stay right here instead of sticking with him, that suits me juuuuuuuust fine!" |

No need for me to go anywhere with your friend (ankou), there." Kat's just left out the 'for me'. "No need to go anywhere with your friend, there". It's common usage over here. A version with 'for you' looks as unnatural to me as the version without looks to you. |

I also see no issue with the wording, and I'm American. Then again, I read a lot, and a decent amount of it is Brit Lit. That may have colored my ear a bit.

An implied "for you" or "for me" or "for anyone" or "for (insert other word here)" isn't dependent upon where you're from or what version of English you speak, anyway . . . it's dependent upon the context. The context here is that Ankou and Annie are going to be leaving Kat and Mort behind and Kat is just fine with that. The confusion about this confuses me. |

Two countries seperated by a common language and all that. Centre is balderdash in comparison with center, but grey... grey will always be superior to gray. For some reason I always write "offense" when talking about emotion but "offence" when talking about action. It doesn't help that spell-check will often accept either version as correct. |
