Really? Nobody's going to mention Paranatural? Read Paranatural. It looks like it's doing well, anyway, in 4th place.

Questionable Content please? QC was the first webcomic I read, it got me into the entire world of them, so I still hold a soft spot for it. But the stories recently have just been all about shipping as many of the characters up as possible. Dominic Deegan was my first- still got a small soft spot there too, but not enough for me to avoid realizing how bad the comic was as I got older. The author had almost zero artist evolution. I checked back when I heard the series ended and was surprised/seized by mirth when I saw that the art style was almost unchanged from the early chapters.

I voted for a lot, so I'll just mention my tops in no particular order (of which most have already been touched upon in this thread):
-GKC (duhhh) -Girls With Slingshots (best slice of life other than Octopus Pie) -Octopus Pie -Plume -Paranatural -Nimona -Manly Guys Doing Manly Things -Monster Pulse -SSSS (even though it hasn't really picked up yet, I have high hopes due to A Redtail's Dream) -Abominable Charles Christopher -Love Me Nice -Power Nap -Earthsong

Eh, I've been a reader of Boulet's work for a long time in French, even bought a bunch of books, but I found it has really gotten formulaic and repetitive —all while attempting to present itself as original and out-of-bound; plus I don't really like his minimal-effort vision of life.

I just had no idea there were so many webcomics. There are in fact only about fifteen. The rest are various custom skins.

It is with some pride that I have a long list of comics that I feel deserve my vote under the spoiler A Softer World Ava's Demon Awkward Zombie Bear Nuts Between Failures chainsawsuit Cucumber Quest Dead Winter Derelict Dr McNinja Garfield Minus Garfield Gunnerkrigg Court Gunshow Kawaii Not Kiwi Blitz Manly Guys Doing Manly Things Next Town Over Non-Adventures of Wonderella Paranatural Scary Go Round Snow by Night Spindrift Unsounded Widdershins Will Save World For Gold Zen Pencils
Order of the Stick & Schlock Mercenary are exceptional webcomics as well, but I'm not going to vote for them because I feel that they don't have much use for the exposure that this award would provide.

I kind of want to archive binge on A Redtail's Dream.
But whatever. I have not read it yet, so I should do so before commenting.

I was surprised to see Powepuff Girls Dojinshi in the list. I remember reading all of the available pages back when I didn't even really know English. It had 114 pages, I believe. I gave up reading it because it was taking forever to update.
The title "Fox Sister" caught my atention, so I read the first chapter today, and it seems really good. Ava's Demon, the first place, has the most beautiful art I have ever seen in a webcomic. I am still not sure how I feel about the story though.
Garfield minus Garfield is pure genius. I am disappointed that it isn't higher up in the list. It should be at least above Cyanide and Happiness.

I really only voted for Gunnerkrigg Court and Sister Claire (check that one out if you're curious; I like the art style!).

One that I didn't see listed is False Positive. I guess it's anthology style? Buncha different short stories, all horror/Twilight Zone-esque. Not for everyone, but I like it. Heeeey, Fox Sister is updating again! YAY! Oh right, spoilers are great for long lists. My bookmarks, though I don't check all these regularly:
A Softer World Abominable Charles Christopher Ava's Demon Awkward Zombie Battlepug Blindsprings Bug Martini Cucumber Quest Cyanide & Happiness Dead Winter Dinosaur Comics Dorkly Dr McNinja False Positive Family Man Fox Sister GastroPhobia Girl Genius Girls With Slingshots Gunnerkrigg Court Hijinks Ensue Johnny Wander Lackadaisy Lunarbaboo Manly Guys Doing Manly Things Marooned Monster of the Week Monster Pulse Myst the Book of Atrus (officially sanctioned, no less!) I don't have a single list. I have seven day-of-the-week lists, a monthly list, a random-update list, and an uncategorized list. There are collectively a bare minimum of 59 distinct entries, possibly as many as 85. (However, four of them are serialized text stories rather than comics.)
I missed the seeding vote, and the first bracket isn't up yet.

Not enough people seem to know about Bouletcorp and it makes me sad. Oh, thank you, never heard of, but looks great. I need more evenings to waste on archive binge. I just started organizing my webcomics in a days of the week system, I already had a hiatus list (afterlife blues anyone?), and a "Finished" list. Last one on that was Rice Boy. Now I need a "to be binged" list. I'm thankful for Dresden Codak's slow updates, or I would have no time to eat or sleep. -Girls With Slingshots (best slice of life other than Octopus Pie) Great start of the days Gunnerkrigg doesn't update.

Personally, I'd vote for those (and this list is a filter of comics I watch AND like enough to vouch for):
Absolute favourites, story comics: Ava's Demon, Gunnerkrigg Court (duh), Freefall.
Absolute favourites, non-story comics: XKCD, SMBC, Abstruse Goose.
Good ones, story: Girl Genius, Darths&Droids, Romantically Apocalyptic, TwoKinds, Bird Boy, Candi, Zap!
Good ones, non-story: Penny Arcade, A Softer World, SatW, PHD (yes, there is an overall story, but it's mostly unconnected sketches), The Most Depressing Job On The Starship Enterprise, Buni.
Not on the competition list, but still good: Dresden Codak, The GaMERCaT, Death and the Maiden, Nerf Now, What The Duck, Dilbert, The Zombie Hunters, Wumo.
Again, comics I don't currently watch do not get onto this list. Those marked as favourties I urge everyone to check out, if you haven't already. Especially Freefall, it's under-appreciated. But, de gustibus non est disputandum.

Just so I can get away with another chemistry reference... here's a good way to envision the power of the two comics I voted for. (It's actually the 1H NMR spectrum for toluene. The massive peak at ~2.4 ppm will stand for GKC, while the small hump at around ~7 is Sister Claire.

So, speaking of discovering new webcomics, I have found a webcomic that is basically Gunnerkrigg Court for adults. Ok, not really, but hear me out. iothera.comThis is a sci-fi fantasy comic set on a distant planet (or possibly Earth in a very distant future, or possibly an alternate universe), centered around the character of Cassandra Navarathna, a postgraduate student in astrothaumatology, and also a trans-girl. This is mostly a dialogue-centered webcomic so far, about science, carreer paths, relationships… and it's extremely well written, the characters are just great, and even though there is little action, I was sucked in instantly. The art is also quite good. And, as you've gathered, it's also very lgbt friendly. But if it wasn't enough, it also has very tasty scenes of explicit nudity and sexual encounters (making it very much nsfw, hence the "Gunnerkrigg Court for adult" feel). Seriously, it's really, really, great, check it out.

Time for the today's 'Wait, what' moment: Not on the competition list, but still good: (...) Wumo. a.k.a. Wulffmorgenthaler!? The odd strip in the daily newspaper I read?! Truly I'm flabbergasted seeing it mentioned here.

Good news- we're closing the gap with Ava's Demon. That is a promising sign. I hope we have the firepower to go toe to toe with them when the eliminations start.
Edit: aaand I am not seeing Gunnerkrigg Court anywhere on the voting list.
Somebody tell me I'm just blind and that Tom hasn't pulled out. Again.

I guess when Comicmix said they were "retiring the GKC jersey to the rafters" last year they meant permanently. Kind of weird that they would include it in the seeding round if it wasn't going to be in the contest.

Kind of weird that they would include it in the seeding round if it wasn't going to be in the contest. To quote from the post that went up with the opening of round one: "First, some housekeeping details: There have been a few last minute disqualifications and a few retirements. As such, the numbers look a bit different than the voting rounds might suggest." I imagine that means that Tom asked for GKC not to be involved, but after the initial seeding round.

I remember certain Goblin fans were more than a little upset about the final matchup, particularly how close it was. They chose to be mad and throw outlandish accusations of foul play, and Tom decided... it was more trouble than it was worth? I don't remember what the particular reason given was, or if there was one.
In all honesty, it was completely avoidable- most everyone here was not just civil but cordial. Webcomics are still a pretty small niche. There is a lot of overlap between fanbases and a large number of the well-known ones have met and know each other personally. B9 Kingdom is a perfect example- a collab by Yuko (Johnny Wander) KC Green (Gunshow and etc.) and Evan Dahm (Riceboy). And of course, almost everybody links to everybody.
And of course, anybody can just buy the votes. They donate the money to charity. You could turn a tough match with just a hundred bucks.

To be fair, the Goblins fans were fine, too (as far as the forum is concerned; I lurk over there fairly often). As far as my understanding goes, it just got ugly in the comments of the poll.
