Where is the I dont know and I dont care option? If you're gonna be politically correct you've gotta include the ones who aren't politically correct too. =P EDIT: Maybe add a potato option if someone identifies as silly? Just maybe... There's an 'other', 'gender questioning' and 'neither male nor female' option. HOWEVER: Something that highly irritates me about the facebook options is that you can't just delete your gender and have it blank. "Don't know and don't care" = win! Gender: "Yes"

This kind of thing confuses me as, as hard as I've tried, I can't comprehend the concept of a "mental gender" (the phrase sounds to me as illogical as "blue sound" or "heavy distance" -I can't figure out how to apply the adjective to the noun) although I do believe that it exists for other people*. So I guess that makes me an "agender"? That's what I voted for anyway... I call myself male because I'm physically male, if Tedd Verres shot me with a transformation gun I'd call myself a woman.
*Please don't misunderstand this to mean that I think transgender people are delusional or as an expression of any kind of hate.**
**This disclaimer should be unnecessary but apparently it's not.

I don't personally know anyone who is gender conforming aside from my grandfather and my uncle What country do you live in?

Hi agasa, Thanks for trying to explain things, I really appreciate it... Feeling unable to understand something bothers me a lot. I'm afraid though that what you said is pretty much what I've read elsewhere through my "research" and hasn't helped. So if you're right, then I really am "agender" (surprisingly enough, this is the first place where I even saw that word). Tedd Verres is a main character of a webcomic called El Goonish Shive who (simplified explanation) has a "magic" gun that can change people's physical characteristics in different ways. It's most commonly used in the comic to change people's sex, and Tedd likes testing it on himself (there's some evidence he may be transgendered himself but it's never mentioned in the comic so far). I've thought about the scenario, and I can see several problems with waking up as a woman one day: Getting used to a body with unfamiliar functions, convincing people (and institutions such as banks, universities etc) that I'm the same person, etc. But, except for the first one, they're basically the same problems I'd have if I woke up as a man who looked vastly different than I do. Regarding the gender role thing, I understand that concept, although I view it as a social construct, based on my knowledge. Kat would be a guy because society expects that behaviour mainly from guys, not because there's anything particularly male about science etc.

I don't personally know anyone who is gender conforming aside from my grandfather and my uncle What country do you live in? America, wouldn't you know it?! I was more referring to the possibility that my idea of gender conformity is more narrow than most people that use the term, and that I tend not to form friendships with people that fit into that idea. It also helps that I don't know very many people nor have a strong drive to form friendships/meeting other people's acquaintance. This is a fair approximation of my perspective on the matter too. Agender huh? I'm under the impression that I identify with the gender that I do out of convenience rather than any notion of identity derived from it. So agender doesn't strike me as accurate of a descriptor as ambivalent to my role, but willing to pretend like I respect it.

From what has been shown, I would not say that Tedd is transgendered. I would say that he is fully bi-gendered. He is (I think) totally comfortable with being male, and also totally comfortable with being female, and *extremely* comfortable with changing back and forth. However, he is not necessarily totally comfortable with other people's reactions to him, in either gender. Tedd is also rather uncomfortable with another aspect of himself - he is amagical.

EGS spoiler: The main reason I think so is the interdimensional whale incident. Most of that happens in Tedd's mind and there he's a woman. But as I said, it's possibly evidence, nothing conclusive.

Learning lots of new vocab from this thread. Can't wait to forget it all in about a week's time.. Weird, I tried it and it didn't seem to work. test Unless it doesn't work in preview but does when you post? Let's see. EDIT: Yes, that's it. Yeah, proboards' preview thing doesn't show it for some reason. It even generates the same html it would after posting, but because isn't any style applied to it so without editing it just looks like plain text [ at least it isn't the only option for spoiler-ish text]

They're still missing the "wtf!?" category. After just glancing that list I think I would belong to that one. On a second glance, "other" should just cover that, so what am I complaining.

Thanks for posting this. I have thought about saying something similar, but... too shy, too boring me. (I wrote five more paragraphs, but then deleted them before posting. I'll just stick with saying how much I appreciate everyone here being so open to talking about themselves and the LACK of judgmentalism and negativity this topic would generate in so many other forums. You all rock.) Edit to add: And thank you eyemyself for introducing me to the site www.blackgirldangerous.org in your current signature. Very awesome.

I did not know we had a gender thread . I would have been so in it. I guess it happened during my break from the forum. Now I really want to explain what cisgender means. But I guess I'll save it for another time. Congrats Snipertom!

But I guess I'll save it for another time. Cisgender is basically the opposite of transgender. There's an in-between area called genderfluid. Transgender is explained (to a person who is physically male) on this page of another comic. Genderfluid is on the subsequent page. (The pink-haired guy's comments and questions make sense in that comic's context.) +1 If you're willing to share, I'd like to hear how you're handling the legal and social aspects of the change. Edit: something you might find useful (although you may have already seen it) Edit 2: also, my favorite webcomic I've discovered so far this year might be of interest

Please, I would be happy to hear an explanation by a "huge gender dork" (love that wording), as the one given by warrl didn't really help me at all, despite having done my fair share of gender studies.

Erm, gender non conforming? I don't know, actually. I guess I consider myself a guy, but I can't be bothered with the traditional male roles that is expected of being male. How can you tell? Or, I suppose, determine?

I'm kind of the polar opposite of Lit, an anti-gender-dork. I'd like it if someone would explain to me how 'not being bothered with traditional male roles' makes you less of a guy.
