I wonder how the Chickacarney communicates with the doe. The doe seems to understand when he talks, but how does the Chickacarney understand what she wants to know? Does she 'say' something (maybe the "snuff" on panel five?), or is it some sort of telepathic communication? Can he sense what other forest creatures desire? In any case, though the doe seems to be drawn as a regular animal, it appears to be much more intelligent. Intelligent enough to formulate questions about the coming of seasons, count days, and understand English at the very least. Through the Ether, I'd guess. I doubt that the new-hatched pigeon could even begin to understand such concepts as hunger or preferences, but was probably able to express its desires in general terms that were understandable by Paz. The Chickcharney and other inhabitants of the Forest probably communicate through similar means, whether consciously or unconsciously. The inhabitants of the forest seem to either be mythical beings or ordinary creatures suffused with magic as a side effect of living alongside gods, demigods, and extraplanar beings.
