Google search on Mythical Creature "face of an owl" doesn't get me any obvious hits. Is this a critter out of Gunerkrigg's own worldsetting, or am I just not looking in the right way? And folks, really, Smitty's power STILL is not luck. Remember?

The critter that's inside of today's comic is from the Andros and Bahama Islands in the Caribbean; it's called a Chickcharney. If you met one and you're nice to it, it'll give you good luck. If you're not... Ah, I see someone else recognized a chickcharney and beat me to the "post."

Ooh, the chickcharney looks good. A quick google shows similar looking images, and descriptions of a creature with an owl's face and a stork's legs.
Also:
Maybe andrew's powers of bringing order disentangle the creature's trees, ruining its nest and bringing misfortune upon them...

Why am I always the only one in every group I'm ever in that thinks the mildly terrifying thing is cute? Is it the eyes? It's probably the eyes. But come on! Who wouldn't want a barn owl dino monkey? I know I want one. Nope, you're not the only one this time! I really badly want to befriend this... owl...otter...thing; it's precious! There, see? We're cool. Look at us, everyone we're cool! NO. Owlbox is not a disappointment, it is adorable.Ooh, it has a name! I guess pitting Smitface against a luck beastie is going to go somewhere interesting. LUCK V ORDER, WHO WILL WIN?

Meh, I guess he is kind of adorable. For a disappointment, that is. At least the name stuck.

Hi everyone! First post, but a long time reader. The critter that's inside of today's comic is from the Andros and Bahama Islands in the Caribbean; it's called a Chickcharney. If you met one and you're nice to it, it'll give you good luck. If you're not... I think it's safe to say we know how this is going to end Oh. Neat! I wonder what horrible thing would happen if it attempted to curse Andrew. And folks, really, Smitty's power STILL is not luck. Remember? It's really not that different.

Owls have razor-sharp talons and silent hastening wings, thus are scary. Chickcharney are flightless owls with friendly dispositions, and are therefore adorable. It's science. The glowing red eyes are for the convenient ease of finding them in the dark. Thoughtful of them, really.

ctso74 is right. Science clearly proves that chickcharneys are adorable. It has proven adorableness a thundsund times before! Scorpions are poisonous, pointy, and snippy so they're scary. But a scorpion in a top hat has been known to reduce scary levels 5%. It's science AND math.

According to Science, you can't say no to this face, even if it has extra arms and a weird tail.

Aaahh, so so cute. Look how soft and sweet it looks. <3 Tummy feathers all white and soft like mashed potatoes with a sweet heart face. Who cares if their screeches are scary as hell? They eat the mice so you don't have to! See? Science is telling me that I must pet pet pet the cute thing.

According to Wikipedia, the myth goes if you treat a chickcharney well, you'll get good luck.
I wonder if since Smitty's here, the creature's attracted to them - already expecting to be treated well. Then more and more will come saying things like "Feed me" and "rub my belly" - they'll get overwhelmed and have to flee for their lives at the excess friendliness.

I ran into those eyes this morning, but they were less red and much farther away. ;D
There's a pair of bard owls nesting outside my house. In the morning when I go out one of them sits in a tree and stares me down until I'm deemed far away enough from the eggs.

According to Wikipedia, the myth goes if you treat a chickcharney well, you'll get good luck. That's a setup if I ever saw one. "If"? There must be some sort of hazard along the way. The exception proves the rule, so those guys are bad news.

The exception proves the rule, so those guys are bad news. The setup is that if you're rude or disrespectful to it it turns your head on backwards.
