And then throughout the court room, the sounds of cheer and dismay echo with the calling of the name. Bets had been made, and some will walk home tonight with many a dollar in the pocket, while others walk without a single cent. Unbeknownst to most, Jones seems to have won quite a lot of cash. Afterwards, Jones is left holding a large wad of bills. She approaches Eglamore. "Jim." "Hm?" "What do humans do when they win a lot of money by chance?" "They spend it all on Patrón and expensive club venues to convince other people they are rich. Why?" "I see. Just curious." *several hours later* JONES UP IN THE CLUB, YEEEEEEEEEE BUDDY, KNOCK 'EM BACK JONES! Oh dang... did she just... kill the bouncer?

Drunk Jones would be the best thing. Well, if alcohol even works on her.

Is anyone else creeped out more than usual, by Coyote's smile? I know the smile hasn't changed, but the post-mindrape heebie jeebies just make him seem like such a Stepford Smiler. I suddenly feel skybricked. I wonder what Ysengrin is thinking. I mean, Coyote wiped his memory of attacking Annie, so how does he interpret her expression? "Was the plan"? My random crazed theory, which may or may not have been postulated by someone else, is that Someone Else receives this position and Coyote announces he's giving up his role as Forest Medium to Annie. Ysengrin is the Forest Medium. I love Coyote's word choice in panel 3. I thought about this variant long ago too. 'Grin can be smarter than he looks, but isn't a great diplomat, and probably isn't very happy to visit this rabbit warren every time Coyote get bored, so it's not like he would be upset. "Winter vacation begins now, see you in two weeks!" Oh, right. This.

I'm going with "Annie is the new Medium, but Parley's going to be the next Dragon Slayer." It would make sense. Parley is named after a dragon slayer.

I'm warming up to this idea - Jimmy Jims is looking a bit old (notice the neck and the crows feet near the eyes). A foreshadowing of "changes" coming up?

That or the new medium is Red. oh god yes Why not? She's popular among the fairy folk... and likes Ysengrin a lot. ;D I'm warming up to this idea - Jimmy Jims is looking a bit old (notice the neck and the crows feet near the eyes). That says more about having to deal with Antimony.

My bet for Annie, and I think what Parley will be very disappointed at this decision. Nah, Parley would probably be shocked if it turned out to be her. Thinking about that strip, and the bit when the others meet Mort, I think that Annie is a distinct possibility. After all, it wan't that she had the opportunity to do things, it was that she took the risks that gave her the opportunities to do things. I think the lesson that Q taught Picard in Tapestry applies here (i.e. Parley may not have been invited to the forest but, as far as we can tell, she never even tried to do anything to change that). Also their assessments of Coyote's first visit would suggest that Parley was not a good choice (but that may have changed). Her observation was the most simplistic. Andrew's observation, however, showed that he was thinking politically. I would not rule him out.

Over all, I do think Annie is most likely to become medium, since she's the main character and all (+ she's proven herself capable and stuff). Still waiting for Friday with a bated breath though.

Actually, judging by Jones' explanation on the page next to that one, I think all of them have made good observations, and they kind of complement each other. Parley's comment is related to what Jones says in pannel 2, Annie's is related to what she says in pannel 3.

Agreed -- although a possible meta-reason for Parley to be medium is so that Tom can keep her around after she graduates next year, since she's already in sixth form.

Thinking about that strip, and the bit when the others meet Mort, I think that Annie is a distinct possibility. I think that BEFORE the class met Mort, it was already Annie's position to lose - not anyone else's to win. Item 1: at the first meeting, Coyote invited her to visit the forest. Item 2: with a couple of mythic beings coming out of the forest, and Annie heavily involved with one of those mythic beings, her observation in class was... about the headmaster. She looks at both sides, even in the presence of this huge attention-grabber. I think those events alone, in the absence of something really saying "No, not her!", pretty much settled it in Jones' mind. Having already met and befriended Mort - and helped him with his problems of a sort that she doesn't have - certainly didn't hurt, of course.

Predictions for future.
If Annie becomes the medium, and I'm not saying she will, Tom will devote a single panel to Ysengrin looking on at the proceedings with an expression of concealed of pride on his face for Annie and it will absolutely tug at your heartstrings because of how Annie is still avoiding him.
Or not, I can't tell the future.

There are several possibilities:
1) Annie gets chosen. 2) Parley gets chosen. 3) Parley gets chosen, but she refuses. 3b) *Very unlikely* Annie gets chosen, refuses because of what happened in the forest. 4) Whoever gets chosen, Coyote objects (just to be difficult). 5) Mort Fun time
Though I think we can all agree that no matter what happens, something will happen that'll surprise and confuse us all.

Agreed -- although a possible meta-reason for Parley to be medium is so that Tom can keep her around after she graduates next year, since she's already in sixth form. Other possible such reasons for Parley, rather than Annie, to become medium: 1. Not being chosen as medium would keep Annie on the outskirts of the Court's organization, ensuring more stories about her investigating things with just a few friends to help. 2. It could serve as a way for her to see the consequences of her rule-breaking and rebelliousness.

I noticed it in the past couple'a pages, but here it's really prominent: Antimony's hair-tie is really, really long. At first glance it always looks like some kinda big cricket or something, to me. I think it's because she uses tree/sapling(?) branches to tie them up www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1060and through the rest of that chapter, you can see it behaving the same way. I also really enjoy the fact that (despite the scare in the forest and Coyote's warning) Annie still does it along with her official court uniform-thing.

I even think that the fact that Jones deemed her worthy to tell her her background is enough to show that Annie will be medium... In ADDITION, that she said something along the lines of "things will be changing for you shortly," seen here in the last chapter may turn out to be a direct reference to her becoming medium. Not to mention her mother's aptitude for the job. The Court knows that in some ways she's a lot like her mother and in some interpretations, IS her mother... I can't remember if that's something the court is aware of; I feel like that's something Tom's mentioned on the FormSpring. Agreed -- although a possible meta-reason for Parley to be medium is so that Tom can keep her around after she graduates next year, since she's already in sixth form. That's totally solved by her becoming Egger's apprentice. :3 Edit: Keep forgetting HTML tags don't work on here...

Definitley feel like Parley will end up being the next Dragon Slayer.
As for Medium, I know Annie will win but in my heart I want Smitty to win.
