And yet all I can think is: the urban landscape in the first pannel is pretty nice.

Robot and Shadow are the archetype of "true friends" - from two different worlds.
I wonder if this is meant to be a counterpoint to Annie and Kat's friendship. What cruel "changes" does Tom have in store for them?

I must say, this is the weirdest pairing I've ever seen. And it's a canon one, at that! But shouldn't the robot's body be plenty warm? Computers and machines with moving parts tend to heat up a fair bit in use. As an engineer I can tell you, none of the court robots would be able to function if their parts weren't hyper-efficient, with very little waste heat.

Meh, I'm not seeing the Eros kind of love going on. These two remind me of the original greek-style friendship, where two guys transcended the bonds of filial and erotic love to a comeraderie that was pure. Like Achilles and his Cousin (I think it was his cousin anyway). While today we would see such a love as homoerotic (It was common for the greeks to participate in this kind of love, see the Sacred Band of Thebes), this kind of friendship was not it. And although I could be wrong, that is how I see Shadow2 and Robot

Perhaps this chapter will be about everyone breaking up rather than pairing up? But that still wouldn't explain Rey and Robot's old body... Unless... Robot's body was broken down into paperclips, after all, so that might... But now I'm talking nonsense! Gaah! Thanks a lot, forum! Rey and a box of paperclips would make a pretty terrible pairing anyway.

That's the relationship that Plato used as an example of divinely approved lovemaking between two men.

Perhaps this chapter will be about everyone breaking up rather than pairing up? Hey, this actually makes a lot of sense. We know Coyote split up the Court and the Forest, separating Jeanne and GreenBoy. Maybe that's what Coyote's eye means, in the previous page. Separation. As for Rey and the old robot, maybe it means Rey's gonna leave the Court? Assuming that old robot represents the Court, of course.

That's the relationship that Plato used as an example of divinely approved lovemaking between two men. Huh, that's something I didn't know, and is pretty neat. The fact that the Ancient Greeks had no analogue words for Homosexual and Heterosexual is rather telling. But in any case, the point I was trying to make is that I think that Shadow2 and Robot's love is a love that transcends sexual desires and is a bond of loyalty and devotion. But thank you for pointing out that, I hate I give faulty evidence.

I can't imagine Tom doing a chapter where not only does Rey leave Annie, but she and Kat stop being friends, Shadow and Robot break up and Parley and Smitty break up. It just seems unbalanced towards sadness in a way that's against the tone of the comic.
Now having one of those relationships go south while the other three prosper as counterpoint, that I can totally see.

I agree, I think by Robot's nature any relationship he has has to be beyond sexual desires. I think it's a relationship that's clearly framed in romantic terms but equally it has to be non sexual or platonic. It's a love between two people who live as a couple without having sex. Where the devotion and loyalty exists without the lust. Such romantic but not sexual relationships do exist.

I don't think there's anything weird about it It's very sweet, and once again gently pokes at the relationship between court and forest, and certain questions such as robots and emotions. I just hope they don't end up as sacrifices like Jeanne and her lover... Nice avatar. EDIT: Forgot to quote... xD

Meh, some people like to ship, some people like to discuss and analyze. And yeah Gary, I can totally see that scenario happening here. I mean, one's an anthropomorphic shadow and the other's a robot. I honestly don't see much more than "I love you robot/shadow" going on. But then again, shippers, and to a larger extent fanfiction writers in general, will find a way...and it scares me...

I don't ship things normally, except maybe stuff like in Sherlock where everyone in the series things they are gay or in House when Wilson and House constantly talk as if they are a couple.
I think this will sooner or later be a canon ship, not even Parley and Smitty has had moments more romantic. They kissed, yes, but this page is just too heartwarming.

I like your avatar too And I tend to agree with you. I think it's hard to explain Robot and Shadow's relationship using terms with traditional connotations or human examples, but I do believe it's love. The type of love that transcends gender, species, creation... Moments like these and the care they've shown towards each other throughout the series, demonstrate how their friendship has developed. While it might not be the type of romantic love you would associate with Parley and Smithy, I think it's just as strong, if not stronger. I mean, the biggest barrier P & S had to transcend was a small age difference and a whole lot of embarrassment. Lovely scene, and I can't wait to see more.

Oh man, this is so adorable. I... hey, wait a second.
"But my body does not give out warmth, Shadow."
"... humming in your chest..."
Okay so he clearly has internal mechanisms (as any robot WOULD, being a machine and a computer) but gives off no heat? I don't buy it.
Sorry, I just had to nitpick. This isn't the first time I've seen a story be like "a robot is metal therefor its cold!" Sure their heat generation wouldn't be as evenly distributed as a biological organism, but it has to come out SOMEwhere.

Since the cozy relationship is being adequately covered, I'll pose another question. Winter is here? It seemed pretty balmy the last time we were outside, slipping barefoot through the wood. Being chased by mad gods. How much time has passed since last two chapters? How much time has elapsed since the last two chapters? If this

I'm always forgetting that shadow is a girl. Or at least has a girl-voice. It is probably because she has a body that looks anthropomorphic. And the green hoodie also doesn't work... But the pairing is cute and that is the most important... I'm pretty sure Shadow is a dude. Robot doesn't really have a gender because he's a machine, but I would describe his attitude as more male than female. I believe I have heard Jones refer to both of them as "boys", although I'd have to check. Maybe I'm just imagining things. As for the voice, maybe it does sound like a girl, after all it was Antimony and Kat that taught Shadow to speak English in the first place. The page finally worked for me. I have to say, that's one of the more peculiar relationships I've seen in fiction. Not to say that it isn't heartwarming, though. But shouldn't the robot's body be plenty warm? Computers and machines with moving parts tend to heat up a fair bit in use. He must be working a lot faster and more efficiently in this weather. Big server rooms often have coolant pumped through channels or air exchange cooling. The thing is, that works because metal is a good conductor of heat (and lack of it), so I imagine leaning against Robot would be like leaning against a frozen flagpole with a sweatshirt on. Still adorable though. ;D

Well, I guess it'll depend on whether or not the mildly creepy robot religion thing turns bad or not.

implying that people who do one can't do the other, and implying that people who do the former are somehow less intelligent or rational than the former? if you want discussion, here's some analysis that i'm surprised hasn't seemed to have been brought up yet: Shadow is a creature of Gillitie Wood (a specific creation of Coyote, no less), Robot is--well, a robot. a creature of the Court. one of the major themes of the comic has been the struggle for balance between humans/technological progression and creatures of the Aether/nature. and yet here we see a peaceful, amicable, perhaps even loving relationship between a personification of the Aether and a personification of technology. the fact that two beings of such seemingly opposed natures could even become companions is highly irregular from what we've seen in-comic. their relationship could very well be foreshadowing at peace between Gillitie and the Court. HOWEVER, maybe not. the characters on page seem to be paired by close relationships (ex....cept for Reynard and that Robot. don't know what's going on there), but the presence of Coyote's eye and the title "Changes" seem to be slightly ominous. i think it may be foreshadowing some rifts between friends. not to mention that Annie's creation of Robot and subsequent introduction of him to Shadow, in order to get him across the bridge, was A) the very first major storyline of the comic and B) the thing that set that main plot off. what i'm trying to say is, i highly Robot and Shadow's relationship--platonic, romantic, whatever you wish to classify it--is just there to be cute fangirl fodder. these are a very important pair of characters in GKC. we have to keep our eyes on these two. and if we happen to think they'd make a cute couple along the way, well. so be it.

Annie's second shadow and a robot body that Kat built, sitting in a high place enjoying friendship.
I'm pretty sure we're meant to be reminded of Annie and Kat in simpler times, before changes set into their relationship.
