Wait, several years ago, yet this is clearly after the previous flashback, we're going forward now, or are we???

Farther back still, and Jones definitely looks the same as she does now. Also, she's trying to be comforting, but her expression makes the action seem creepy (to me, anyway).

Wait, several years ago, yet this is clearly after the previous flashbcak, we're going forward now, or are we??? Still back, I'd say. Jones is (or at least appears to be) taking advantage of Surma's choice to make a move on Eglamore, the results of which we see in the previous comic.

But they both seem older than in the previous flashback!

Jones expressionlessness makes it creepy to me too. That's not really fair. There are real people who have trouble with facial expressions and that doesn't necessarily make them creepy. Most people aren't unaging, super dense badasses, though.
Eglamore, I don't like you, but thanks for voicing a question I really care about. Why did Surma go for Anthony?

Is that supposed to be some kind of kiss on the cheek, Jones?
Jones: "I will always be here for you, James." I interpreted this in two ways: 1) Jones said that to cheer James up, reassuring him that she's there to give friendly support. Just a friend comforting a friend. 2) Maybe Jones has feelings for James? Kinda like she's saying, "Oh, since Surma doesn't like you back, can I be your rebound?"
However, I do realize—and I don't mind—that I may be wrong. xD
[Edit] I also want to add that James looks a little uncomfortable. I guess kisses from a robot might be too cold on his skin. Just joking.

Also, she's trying to be comforting, but her expression makes the action seem creepy (to me, anyway). They are the perfect couple he couldn't hide his emotions to save his life, and she couldnt bat an eye at a puppy kitten mass funeral if she wanted to. I have to wonder does eggers know Jones likes him at this time, (sideways look says, yes) cause complaining about how you just got dumped is up there with Puppy in the Park, for ways to pick up chicks

Well, I guess Eglamore will find the answer in the comming years. I mean, emotional surma falling for emotionless Anthony isn't that different from Eggers 'falling' for Jones.

I wonder if she's merely at the service of the Protector of the Court. That last frame seems so awkward, even for a broken-heart moment.

Wierd. It's still impossible to figure out whether Jones's emotions are genuine, albeit invisible, or if she's just doing a positive version of riling up Antimony over her father for Eglamore's benefit. We really need to learn more about her for this mystery to be solved...

heh. not only doesn't Jones look any younger, her hair is not getting any longer or shorter (attempts at changing hairstyle still cannot hide the fact)

Hmm, just noticed that this probably takes place right after Jims returned from some of his extended training. His duds give off some sort of military vibe. Also, the bag.
So, in a way, his girl cheated on him while he was in the army, and he learned this only after coming back. Classic ;D

Wait, several years ago, yet this is clearly after the previous flashback, we're going forward now, or are we??? Both Jones and Sir Eglamore look younger to me. Whether or not Jones is an illusion owing to the fact that her hair is changed is debatable. Sir Eglamore does not have the scars he earned in the previous flashback (see: all the bandaids), as such, it is previous to the previous flashback. Further: Jones has emotion, she just has trouble/issues/cannot express them. Or she is manipulating everything. If she is manipulating, to what end? I see none. She appears to me to just be expressing attraction. Addendum: In the present, Sir Eglamore is more than fine with contact from Jones, as such, I believe that whatever is happening in this panel, it is due to the loss of Surma, not his unattraction or dislike of Jones. That is all.

You know, it's suddenly starting to hit me just how long Eggers has been pining for Surma.
Christ man, get a hold of yourself.
Also I really freakin' hate hairstyles where the hair is long but the bangs are pulled back like that.

Panel 7, Eglamore, to himself: "ok, now I have TWO problems".
That, coming from Jones, is creepy both in-universe and otherwise.

Jones is Wandering Eye, a minor deity who is oddly associated with both infidelity and creepy obsessiveness.

I have a lingering impression of "slightly unrequited love". Clearly James wanted Surma, and is massively upset that she didn't choose him. But.. I guess this is Jones being tactless. Someone who is in mourning over another doesn't really want to be told "But but.. *I'll* be here for you!!" It seems somewhat desperate in the context f not knowing Jones. After coming to know Jones a bit in the modern day period of Annie's tenure at the Court, it seems like she's more stating a fact that she will always be there for him. That last panel doesn't show Eggers as very comforted by that fact, even annoyed at her. I imagine him whining like a Spongebob "No, I want Suuuuuuuurmaaaaaaaa."

I don't dislike him at all because other pages have shown that he's not a bad sort, but oh no, it's the "why didn't she choose me" argument! Not an unnatural way to react in that situation, but que sera sera, man, don't take it personally...FOR YEARS D:

If I were Jones, and I had been competing for JJ's affection for years (even throughout the course of their current relationship, as it doesn't seem JJ has much let go of his feelings for Surma) I might feel a little resentful of Annie due to her resemblance to her mother.
[ref: Surma's knife which JJ apparently still keeps on his person; Jones's "try not to undress the students" barb.]
If I were Jones, I might be inclined to deny Annie the medium position out of spite. It would make me nauseous to so uncannily recreate the "old days", when my now-lover ignored me to pine for the late court medium.
But then again, if I were Jones, I might happen to be a robot and therefore not given to such petty human abuses of power.
Maybe.

Did we know Eglamore had been in love with Surma before? Did we know he was the same age (ish) as Annie's father?
I always thought both Jones and Eglamore were in their early twenties. When did we learn otherwise?

When did we learn otherwise? A few chapters back, we got a flashback that showed that Surma, James, Tony, Kat's parents, and someone named Jones (presumably) were all in the same year (or close enough to be friends).
