I think this is part of Jones truth, shows what sort of person she is. If we for example had been just shown jones carved out of a rock, then brought to life, would not show the human like emotions inside. "It's whats inside that counts".
My guess is flashbacks will continue until we know Jones much better, both what she is and who she is. There might even be a Surma/Eggers/Jones flashback.
I don't think they were estranged, was actually a hint of how they were close then, how she could touch and talk to him like at least an close old friend, and he didn't mind.
Eggers long ago was in love with Annie's mom who looked similar and there was a little tension on Jones (jealously?) warning him to be careful about those old emotions with the look-alike daughter. (When Eggers first loved Surma she was likely similar age as Annie is now).

Why is Jeanne macking on the Headmaster???
Alternatively, the next page will return to the present:
JONES: What am I, Antimony? I'm Eglamore's girlfriend, that's what. So you'd better tell your little robosexual friend to back off.

When did James decide to start coloring his hair black? Growing up it was brown... Honestly when I first saw that man sitting there I though it was the old games teacher for James. The one who trained him to be a 'dragon slayer' I was under the impression that Sivo was one of the last Orjaks, so that would make it a rare site for James to see TWO of them in the wild? Im so confused!

Have to say I love the last panel.
Given the size of the smaller dragon flying, I'd theorize we might be seeing the aftermath of a birth - a difficult one - where Eglamore had to assist, causing his injuries. I wouldn't go so far as to say that the smaller one is a newly-born Sivo, but then we don't know how fast these things grow so it could be (making him an 'old friend' indeed).
Unless it's not a mother and child, but a father (specifically, Sivo) and child and this happened shortly before Reynard took over Sivo's body. (Which would place the events within the last decade.)
Also, if Jones only just got there, then who bandaged Eglamore up? Some of the bandages would be near-impossible to apply to yourself.

Perhaps the body The Wandering Eye now inhabits was once Jim's girl. She definitely looks younger. This, this, oh so much this.

Yeah, it's hard to tell whether Jones actually does look physically younger or if it's mainly the informal hairstyle.
The real test to see whether she ages is to go back decades. Remember back in ties, Jones was mentioned, so we'd have to go back at least 20 or 30 years (which in all likelyhood, is Wenesdays strip) to see whether she was a kid once.

Is the background landscape the one shown in the chapter title?
I, for one, think Jones is a perfectly normal human bean.

Im so confused! My guess is it just got darker as he got older. For instance, I used to have fairly light brown hair when I was younger, but now it has shifted to a really dark brown instead. For some reason I hardly think Eglamore would actually take the time to dye his hair. Well, Sivo was one of the last. Thing is that we don't know exactly how long ago this page is set. Sivo might very well be the little Rogat Orjak "pup" for all we know.

And I think that him had something with Jones during studying. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=540

Page 1097 says "a week ago", and Jones in 1098 shows about as much emotions as the one in 1097, so my bet is that it's the same person. I wouldn't be surprised to see a much younger James with the same Jones, meaning she doesn't age as fast as humans, however somehow I don't feel that's how it will be. Recalling that photo scene in 540, it just doesn't make sense. He's been drawn with black hair on several occasions, check pages 110 and 1015 for example. Why his hair is so light in 1098? Well, who know, maybe just sun-burnt.

Or maybe he dyed it as a kid.
It seems we are being shown what Jones is, rather than just told. Which, on the whole, is a far better way to go about it, even if it does require more patience on the part of the audience.

His appearance is quite similar to that in Reynardine, if you take the shoulder bandage and the fact one of those Rogat Orjaks might be Sivo... Uh, no. First, p.52 happened many years after Sivo was possessed and caged. Second, different wounds entirely. She's like a poster girl for lithium. You know Lithium is the lightest alkali metal, right? So Joneslamore ("Jones l'amore!") has been a thing for a while. And Jones is capable of changing her hairstyle. Hmm... Hmmm... No, it's more likely that some of the Foley students love to improve her hairdo, especially how she stays completely deadpan and immobile (except the eyes) through the whole process.

Nice to see this forum is as handy at jumping to conclusions as ever... Subtlety is my middle name. And my first and last, in case you didn't get the message. Registered to post my prediction of Wednesday's update Goddamnit! I knew Jack Ruby wasn't working alone! You know Lithium is the lightest alkali metal, right? Mm-hmm. It's salted/ionic form is also a potent mood stabilizer. This page always makes my head hurt. Love triangle, untangle thyself!

Wait guys, I'm confused. Who is that shirtless guy with the bandages? I initially want to say it's Sir James Eglamore. But there's now speculation that it's a young Mr. Thorn, Eglamore's mentor who supposedly taught Eglamore to be a dragon slayer. Mr. Thorn: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=548gunnerkrigg.wikia.com/wiki/Mr._ThornWhen did James decide to start coloring his hair black? Growing up it was brown... If we're guessing... maybe Jones is going to give a look and Annie will rephrase the question without further hints? You know Lithium is the lightest alkali metal, right? Mm-hmm. It's salted/ionic form is also a potent mood stabilizer. My bad. Let me rephrase this... The metal in question is almost twice lighter than water, and if it really hits water, tend to spontaneously make a ball of burning lithium, burning hydrogen and hot highly caustic spray, jumping on the surface while hissing and blazing with wicked reddish light. So, uh, are you sure that's exactly where you wanted to go look for symbolism?

She has been added to water. She is definitely denser than water, and not particularly reactive.

It was my not-so-polite way of saying she's emotionless on a fundamental level. Edit: lithium citrate to be precise

I'm not sure I like this page. It feels like filler. The only new information we're getting is "many years ago." Other than that it's the same as last page, just with a different setting (and head shape for Eggers). Anyway, art is great. Carry on.

Well, it is new information, though. I figured that Jones+Eglamore was a more recent thing than 'many years' ago. Also, that Jones was away from the Court as well at that time.

The question is, how does Jones relate to Surma? I'm assuming Jones was post-Surma history for James. Tom has confirmed that Jones was actually a child/spawn/prototype at some point, and that she attended school at the court as well.

James bonds with the rogat orjaks on his training, Surma tricks Reynardine, who takes over a guy and - in turn - Sivo. James gets into a quarrel with Surma and they both turn elsewhere (Jones, Anthony) for consolation? .-.

If you say so. :x I've seen a romantic comedy recently, hence the reasoning. GC isn't a romantic comedy, though.. But now I'm thinking about this piece: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=377I wonder, if he could be better than her from a distance and outdoors. O.o Also, the previous pieces... they live an impression that... Jones was missing for some time. As if she came about when Annie did. When the troubles started - or were expected to start. Could the Court have EXPECTED that things will "happen" around Carver? If Jones was indeed missing, maybe she is like a counterweight for the flame that used to burn within Surma and now - within Annie?

I imagine that being able to jump like he does and fly does help a bit. Well, we don't know if she can or cannot fly. Even though she's so "heavy". Also, how should HE attack from distance? I saw him flying 1) to escape and 2) to get in range. C: Also, this makes me smile: Looks like a maze, too. No wonder Mr Tom chose that one. :3 And such a lovely way of using the original symbol, too.
