This page is a pleasant surprise. I love it when Tom decides to go all-out on a page, and this one is just beautiful. (It does kind of look like Jones has two right feet, though.) Edit: Hah! I just noticed Jimmy Jims has a glass case with knives in it. Too cool. I thought the scene was cute but I still don't feel like Jones has very many feelings toward Eglamore. Actually... never mind, she's fiddling with his hair. Or maybe it's just something to keep her other hand occupied. I really can't tell. Even when you think you've got an answer, the mystery persists. TOMMMMM! An emotionless face doesn't mean an emotionless heart. I kinda look at her like a Vulcan. They have emotions and even affections. They're just really good at keeping them in check. So I gotta figure she likes him to SOME degree.

...He's just going to keep flashing back every page for the rest of the chapter, isn't he? Which could be illuminating if the flashback periods get progressively longer. "One century ago..." Ah, but the next page is going to be "Two years later," of course.

Her body language suggests that she's definitely fond of him. Especially a few pages after that. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=376*Edit: forgot to say, Dang Jones is wearing a mini-skirt what! I wasn't expecting that.

What if this isn't a romantic thing? We've seen the two of them get snuggly, but you don't have to be romantically attracted to someone to snuggle.
The prime example that comes to mind: they're related. Brother and sister? Mother and son? FATHER AND TIME-TRAVELING DAUGHTER?

It's so adorable, and so... Jones. But if we're getting LOTS of flashbacks of Jones, it could turn out that these are really meant to answer the question, "what is Jones". ...sooner or later, one way or another... This is much more informative than "I'm a ______". ...but will end in exactly such an understatement? Same old Tom, never does it the easy way. Where would be fun in that? ;D Jones was one of his most long-running tease points. If this mystery truly gets solved, it deserves all the fireworks Tom can pour into it. Maybe Jones has a full range of emotions and just has no control of her facial muscles. D: Or maybe she has the perfect control of her facial muscles. And dies inside. Of laughter. Plausible, and would explain a lot, but doesn't cover the high-density perfection thing. Moreover, as a fairy Jones would be in Foley and Surma would be all over her - neither was the case. Also, by now this falls short of her mystery in general. Why am I so terrible jealous of Jones? Why am I so terrible jealous of Eggers? Why anyone wouldn't be? She is practically perfect in every way. Eglamore spends time with Jones telling her about the rescue of Antimony, then Jones tells the headmaster that Antimony should be the medium, then she goes to tell Antimony and Antimony asks what she is, then the title page gives the answer: "The Stone." Good one! Except the first part - Antimony ran in right from the forest, with dirty feet. So, not unless there is some timetraveling oppositesexclone cyborg. ;D ryanandybob Nice catch! I suspect Tom will explain (if anyone asks), that they put some kind of extra support under the couch cushion, for her sake (and the couch's). Also note that Jones is leaning on the armrest of the couch... And/or as a tough sporting guy Eggers doesn't have furniture very soft. So she already compresses the cushion down to the planks and it won't go much lower without damage to wooden parts.

I think part of the answer here is "people are complicated."
This page illustrates that that holds true for Jones as well. Whatever mythical concept or creature she turns out to embody, she's still a person with complex motivations, wants, and pastimes. She just... reigns that all in a little better than most.

Reins in - like reins for a horse, not like a king reigns. Curse you, english homophones! *shakes fist at heavens*
With things like read/reed and read/red, no wonder it's about the hardest language to learn. And 'Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo' should never be an acceptable sentence. *ahem* Sorry.
Back to the comic. I really like the reflections in the glass as well as how the lamp light is done. It's just lovely.

It is equally believable that Sir Eglamore is more than platonic, or that Sir Eglamore is entirely platonic. While most human relationships are complex and it is generally unfeasible for a mixed sex group to becoming simply platonic friends without one or the other developing an attraction it is possible. Furthermore acting like, or feeling as though you are simply brother and sister may feel contrived at this point, but it does happen. I for one have a few females that I have bonded with that like. (I will admit, one ended up traversing that stage of friendship into the next.) See also: I am also jealous of Sir Eglamore.

What puzzles me is... the whole setup. And that remote is far enough. I see one way it all makes sense: they watched something together. James sat on the floor back to the couch (or to her legs? or they both sat on the floor?), then fell asleep. After which Jones removed that plate and paper from the couch and placed him like this. Or how? in light of this page and the previous one...did she wear the red scarf b/c she had a hickey I really wanted to think about what may leave hickeys at the sword-deflecting skin all this time. Thankyouverymuch. ;D Mandarin легко-режиме. Попробуйте русский язык. und vich language iz dis? (Congrats on circumnavigating the friend-zone's doldrums) In which sense?

I wonder what Eglamore was eating. Note the plate on the floor. I assume it was Eglamore's dish since there is only one and because robots don't eat, hehe. Also, back to [1096].
Jones: "She is the clear choice." Jonathan: "Very well. We will choose a date to announce the next medium."
I'm assuming it's Annie... although Parley could be the "she" that is being referred to.

Seems equally likely that it could be Jones's plate. It is in a neutral position in the middle of the floor. Further, it seems likely that Eglamore is stressed, as he is receiving grooming from Jones, something humans enjoy. (This all hinges on a platonic relationship.) Stress is a known appetite suppressor. Jones: "She is the clear choice." Jonathan: "Very well. We will choose a date to announce the next medium." I'm assuming it's Annie... although Parley could be the "she" that is being referred to. I place my bets on the dark horse.

I'm assuming it's Annie... although Parley could be the "she" that is being referred to. I place my bets on the dark horse. Not necessarily. Some people respond to stress by eating more, and a man like Jimmy Jims who does those incredible running and jumping must use a lot of energy. If I were him I'd be really stressed out. My ex gf used to do a lot of playing with my hair that I found calming. It wasn't til later that we took a psychology course and found out its like a holdover from ape-behavior, and then we were like "meh." As for the choice in medium...I'm not sure. Logically I'd pick Parley unless Annie settles down some. While until the meeting with Ysengrin which in the story hasn't happened yet, Annie has made a lot of progress in establishing new relations and dialogue with the court. Unfortunately she has proved she's easily tricked and maybe too comfortable with the forest, which can't work well since she's supposed to be impartial and deal with a trickster godling on a daily basis.

It's not like Parley is super-composed and logical either. I don't see why Parley is a more logial pick for medium than Annie.
Of the trio, Smitty is easily the most composed and unflappable and his ability is the most suited to keeping control of the odd situations a medium is likely to encounter. But since the new medium is a "she", it's not him.
I still think it must be Annie and Tom is just trying to get us to think it might not be. That or the new medium is someone we don't know from outside the school: such as Brinnie.

That or the new medium is someone we don't know from outside the school: such as Brinnie. Though if the new medium is someone other than Annie or Parley, that raises the question of why we never saw that person during medium classes. (Unless Jones and the Headmaster came to the conclusion that Annie, Parley, and Smith were all unsuited for the job and that they'd have to look outside the medium class for the right person.)
