Maybe Jones has done some investigating and concluded that Jeanne is the clear choice for medium. Of course she's balanced! She hates both sides equally!

I suspect the chapter will follow Jones' previous day and end without us knowing what she is.
EDIT: And I think Annie's the medium, because she'd been doing pretty good up until the last chapter.

I just wanted to add this where Jones explains one of the qualifications to be a medium: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=374Parley might be a better choice, as Carver seems pretty in love with the forest rather than strictly unbiased. Parley seems pretty good about not caring. My question, though, is whether Parley has shown any ability yet? ... . Did you miss the chapter where Parley finally began using her abilities to teleport at will after admitting her love for smits and putting the party hat on Jones as a "HA-HA!"? ... Thanks, descoladavirus, I had completely forgotten that. I know, I know, I'm a lame fan! And there was all that where Smitty knew where she was going to pop up and stuff that made it all cute and memorable, too, and I still forgot it. I blame the hundred other comics I follow, I guess. Although it's only now that I realize that's probably part of Smitty's ability and not just a psychic love connection.

Not that this has anything to do with the current discussion, but the Court does not know about her interactions with Jeanne... as far as we know. Furthermore, they wouldn't appreciate this, considering they did a lot of erasing of the memory about her. It's interesting, though, that Jones seems to not know who Jeanne was, but simply observed, as she does it perfectly, that this was more than just coincidential question from Annie. Unless the founders erased it so well, that the present Court has no idea who Jeanne was, either. The founders expressed an intent to erase the records that well. And Jones, who probably knows more about the history of the Court than anyone else, had no knowledge of that particular individual. So the current Court leadership doesn't know enough about Jeanne to "not appreciate" Antimony's involvement with her. What I find most intriguing about this page is the rubber bookshelf and picture. In the first frame the picture is very close to square and the shelf above it is quite a bit lower than the top of Jonathan's chair. In the fourth frame the apparent height of the camera is the same (relative to Jones) and the picture is still square but the shelf above it is well above the top of the chair. And in the last two frames the picture gets progressively and significantly taller relative to its width.

I have to add my word to this. One thing to me is clear: anybody else than Annie would not have been "the clear choice". Come on. The animals only speak to her, they got angered by the presence of any other, she is invited to the forest all the time, she is half-etheric herself mediates between the etheric and material for fun, she is the daughter of the last medium and Anthony Carve who indubitably has played and probably still plays some significant role in court projects. It can well be that their mating even was a part of court plans.
So, if there has been a clear choice, it must have been Annie. The others would be more like, "well, all things considered, I gave some weight to [choose a quality that suits your choice] and thought that she/he would be suiting" And the headmaster would rise his eyebrows and ask "...and Carver?"
While her contacts with forest could actually make her also less satisfiable to court, that also means that she actually is already practicing for the job. And also, her mother was a crackpot with close relations to forest, where they still missed her after she tricked Renard to the court, so I think the court is quite happy of the medium having good relations with the forest, because that way she can also operate there. What if they sent Parley? Would Coyote even ever invite her there?

You know, if Tom wanted to be REEEEALLY evil, this little flashback would have Antimony loosing the medium position to Parley (or much less likely someone else, perhaps Zimmy) See, I actually think Parley is the least likely of the possible choices, short of something absurd like bringing Surma back to life or Smitty actually being a girl in drag. Gamma would be an excellent choice, Zimmy would be a decent choice... in Jones's place, I'd go with Kat, since she's in the process of becoming a mythological being herself, in a way that sounds very similar to the way Coyote became one/came into existence (the way the robots are making an angel of her is very reminiscent of the way Coyote describes humans making a god out of a wild coyote, as I'm sure many people have noted). However, I don't think that Jones shares my way of thinking about this.

I'm not sure what to add to it that wouldn't be complete speculation, though.
