LAUGHING ON LINE at some of the animations! I like that everyone is making this fun time!
Prediction: next chapter's title shall be 'A Clown For Paz'
(Hey! It's Mort's Fun Time! Deal with it!)

So... am I the only one whose reaction to this page was to freak out about what it might mean in the context of Coyote's revelations?
Seriously, Mort is a phenomenon that we have to completely rethink now, but of course we didn't realize this until all of the sudden he was forced onto our attention like this. Except we still don't really know how he fits in, either. So there's a latent crisis of understanding there, and this page brings it to a head.
It reminds me of this one issue of the old time-travel comic Aztec Ace, a particularly ominous issue in which a character assassinates her past self in order to sever her own connection to the timeline. The final page of that issue is just a series of reproductions of the panel where she does the deed, tightening into a close-up of a cat that was watching from the background, until that cat seems like the most nightmarish thing in the world, simply because it's somehow gained this tremendous importance and we have no idea why.
(Yeah, I know... deal with it.)

Although Tom has not disclosed Mort's background (and maybe never will), I am inclined to believe that he meant this page as he has most all his other chapter "extra" pages... just a chance to be ridiculous and silly within the confines of the comic, and in other cases sometimes provide some "behind the scenes" panels of some of the characters and topics.
Why do we have to rethink Mort's existence? He still is a soul that was not taken for some reason by the Psychopomps. The only new knowledge we have now is that he is a small portion of ether that has not returned to the ether pool.

Why do we have to rethink Mort's existence? Why does Mort distract us right here, right now, with fun time? What's his game? Who's his master? Who's his true master? How HIGH does he even have to BE

Why do we have to rethink Mort's existence? How HIGH does he even have to BE I don't know how that would work, considering smoke would just drift right through a being of the etherium. Perhaps ghosts have their own, ectoplasm-based drugs.

Oh yes, let's all just over-analyse Mort's Fun Time... What is this, school?

Yes. Yes, this is a school. But... it's not *just* a school.

"Mort Fun Time" is actually a cleverly disguised allegory of Antimony's future rise to power as the official medium of Gunnerkrigg Court. The first panel depicts a jubilant Mort surrounded by red bands. The red in the first panel solidifies the fact that Antimony (red-headed girl!) is being metaphorically represented. And although Mort may simply look happy, it is a very naive sort of happiness that is depicted - the eagerness of a child, perhaps? In reality, the first panel points to the Antimony's ambition in starting her journey to become a medium. The second panel depicts a Mort dancing. Here, Mort is being dynamic, moving. This represents Antimony's training in becoming a medium. As Mort as dancing from left to right, so is Antimony progressing in her quest. The third panel depicts a Mort doing the wave. This one is tricky. The wave background motif and the position of Mort's arms are suggestive of the waves one might find in a body of water. This is a representation of the Annan Waters, the physical boundary between Gillitie and Gunnerkrigg that here becomes a metaphor for Antimony's straddling of both the technological human world and the aetherial world of the spirits. The last three panels depict sunglasses descending onto Mort's eyes. This is indicative of Antimony's powers reaching their peak. As she masters her control over fire and embraces her fire elemental history, she finally becomes a true medium. In order to shield her eyes from the light of her now-powerful flame, she must wear sunglasses. But perhaps the greatest evidence for this theory is the following. MORT FUN TIME is an anagram of UNFITTER MOM.This clue hints that Surma, Antimony's MOM, was UNFIT as a medium. This forced her to renew her fire in Antimony, who will inherit her powers and become the new, fit medium of Gunnerkrigg. Tom, you sly devil.
