Okay, here's my stupid theory: Kat makes the tic-tocs in the future. They can travel through time. This is why Zimmy hates them so very much, because they mess with her already fragile perception of time (but she doesn't realise this, because no-one would assume that the weird bird robots were time-travellers). This also explains why genuinely no-one seems to know where they came from. And, they're birds!
Ridiculous guesses aside, I genuinely have no idea what's going on. But Kat doesn't look so scary to me, just peculiar. I wonder if it's scarier in the flesh, or her appearance is just playing into/formed by some of Zimmy's specific fears?

Annie touched the moon without an Eldritch Abomination saying 'Hi', but I wonder if Zimmy has ever tried to reach into space before now? Maybe, this type of vision is a temporary side effect from reaching into the void. Or Kat's just Giger awesome.

I only now realized, Zimmy might possibly refers to Kat at this page. Whereas Gamma refers to Annie. Using the double meaning of the English word "see" (as in "look at" or "meet"). Someone might have already been realized in Monday's comic (I haven't read the thread) but whoa.

Great artwork, Tom!
I was trying to decide if the cracked skull is meant to be bone or chitin, given the dragonfly wings. And what it signifies.
Perhaps we're all being mislead and this isn't Kat at all, but Ketrak, come for some whiteleg gumbo.

"I wonder what's going to happen in Gunnerkrigg Court toda-AUUGH WHAT IS THAT!?"
I have to wonder: How long has Zimmy seen Kat like this? Thinking about it, they've only met 3 times (that we've seen) prior to this and Zimmy doesn't act afraid of her then. I think the "I don't want to see her" must refer to Kat so she's been like this before at least

So what's going on with the two hypodermic needles at the top? I don't see a bird there. I also don't see the feathers, still looks more like dragonfly wings to me and much more insectoid than avian overall.
Incredibly great picture anyway, love it.

An Aetheric Metal-Kat and Fire-Annie wallpaper would be spectacular.

I don't think time travel is beyond Kat's abilities (right now, I don't think anything is beyond her abilities) and, seeing that the Tic-Tocs have saved Annie before, it makes sense to me that Kat could've created them to do exactly that: protect Annie (or maybe the Court as a whole). As to Tom's comment on the previous page and the content of today's: Zimmy is scary to someone like Renard, who's seen many things and Kat is scary even to Zimmy. Just as Annie saw Coyote as magnificent and scary. I'd guess that Kat is some kind of godlike being - and it would make sense, because I don't think it's beyond her to create life. In fact, that's what I think she'll end up doing soon. IMO, Zimmy has the same ability to peer into the ether that Annie has, but it is somehow colored by their psyches: where Annie's fluid and dreamlike, Zimmy's harsh and nightmare-ish.

Ok, I kind of expected something like this but… wow.
If this is how Zimmy sees Kat, to me it would imply that Kat is not a mere human being, but does have some manner of etheric powers.

If I may be so bold, I don't think it's Ketrak because Ket is supposed to be related to insects, and insects are very much organic, whereas the image here is very metallic. On another note, my first thought was: organic metal. Organic because of the slight curves/lines, and because there's some actual rainbow coloration, especially on the right side, in what looks like an insect wing (also organic). Metal because, obviously, it all looks rather machine like. My second thought: Gunnm, aka Battle Angel Alita splashpage.mtv.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/021810_battleangel.jpgwww.thinkhero.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/alita.jpg

Dan Simmons, YES! There are many things in GKC lately that have been reminding me of the Hyperion Cantos, such as.... If so (or similar!), then despite all its efforts there's a lot the Court seems to be missing. It could explain why Rey was so apalled at the manipulation of the ether. If the realms are opposite, then the introduction of technology to the ether could be catastrophic. If the robots are truly alive, and if they extend into this other realm (sorry, I've looked and looked, and can't come up with a name that fits, or even a concept. Given Old Robot's reverence for motion, I'm tempted to call it the Current or the Flow for now), they (or some of them) could be sensitive to it in the way that Annie and the Forest Folk are sensitive to the Ether. Kat must be as well, and that's what she was tapping when Annie got her to clear her mind on the roof. This reminds me so much of the Void Which Binds concept from the Hyperion Cantos. It's a clunky name, so maybe we can just call it the Void haha. But anyway, tapping the Void could explain why, for example, Donny can walk through walls and Eggers can do crazy physical feats. Perhaps the Forest aims to ensure the power is only tapped organically, and the Court attempts to tap it mechanically. Perhaps Coyote is able, in some way, to mess with the way the Court was tapping it, and the sacrifice of Jeanne was how they ensured Coyote could no longer interfere. I have a lot more wild spec - but really that's all it is for now, is wild spec. I love this comic can't wait to see where it goes from here! [edit] As someone else pointed out, the left side of the robot-angel-Kat's face is cracked. However, the right side appears pocked - perhaps it is rusted? What does this imply? Perhaps Kat - or at least the avatar part of her - is older than we realize, and the damage is from tussles with outside forces (e.g., Coyote). Or perhaps the damage is occuring over time right now, and is one of the reasons Kat feels an urge to build a better robot - she feels some urge either to get a new body or to find ways to repair her own. Again, WILD spec! Another question I have - if you can see Kat this way through the ether (I assume) do her parents or Eggers see her this way?! Why doesn't Annie? How the heck did her parents give birth to such a thing - or what if they didn't, and her appearance is due to crazy experimentation on their own daughter?! [/WILDWILDSPEC]

That's...interesting. I really, really don't think that this image is supposed to have anything to do with Ketrak. For one thing, if Kat saw this (somewhere other than a mirror), I think she'd say "Wow! Cool!", not "I need new eyes and a new brain". She's not afraid of machines, not even ones as creepy-cool as this one. And Zimmy certainly hasn't seen Kat like this, before. We've seen Kat from Zimmy's perspective earlier in this chapter, and she just found it funny how Kat's subconscious was represented by a pigeon on her head. This is something new. I have to wonder if this is Kat's true etheric form underneath it all, or a twisted illusion created by Zimmy's distorted perception. I'm kind of leaning towards the latter, since the thing here has a lot in common with Zimmingham's decayed landscapes and insectoid creatures, even though some of Kat's true nature is leaking through in the bird imagery. Also, I wonder if the cracked face is due to the typical decay of Zimmingham, or if it tells something about Kat's current self-perception. She has been very uncertain of how she wants to be perceived as, recently. On another note, I got Tom's confirmation that the title of the chapter refers to divination, not divine beings. It's fun to be right about something in this comic for once, especially since when I was absolutely sure the last time, it totally blew on my face.

You guys are awesome. The Future Tic-Tocs Theory is rocking my brain right now. We've definitely seen Kat say things like "What if you could GROW a building?" before... and we know the Tic-Tocs grew into the cliff face. INTERESTING STUFF
Also, if this is a glimpse of the robot Kat will one day build, we have a good deal of evidence- for instance, her "busting the inventor's block" moment with City Face's little wings- hence the "spinal chain" and "nerve" type structures toward the middle of the page- on the sides. Wing-like, maybe??
And the "dragonfly" wings- well, we've seen her mentally break down Sky Watcher. Would make perfect sense for her to lift that design for her... uh... future mecha android angel.
Anyway, that's the theory I like right now. But who knows because oh my god what is this even.

Now, close the loop - suppose Diego's marvelous designs are based on a tic-toc that he captured, or saw destroyed. But Kat is learning how the robots work from Diego! Take that, causality!

Is that some kind of face, Kat? I don't think this is Ketrak. It's kinda illogical. By the way, we know that Kat was terrified when she saw Ketrak. Now I wonder what HE saw and thought when he looked at Kat...

Also: If Annie got her talents from a distant, ah, union with a fire elemental, I think we can safely assume that Kat's got a robot-lover in her family tree!

Or maybe, she'll look like that in the ether one day? I'm assuming you can change how you look in the ether, whether intentionally or unintentionally. After all, Annie hasn't always had that etheric scar. And fishguy could look handsome by concentrating (assuming that's not his special power or something). Come to think of it, Coyote talk about how someone can be viewed how others see them, how they see themselves, and how they really are. Also, remember the Phoenix form?.. This is just absolutely stunning work. I was expecting to see something crazy on Wednesday... but not this. Isn't it always. Isn't it always. I also thought of Seraph-13, but he's a bit overexcited as is. Am I the only one who thought this? Hokay - now dot's scary. ;D

First and foremost: Great job, Tom. The artwork is impressive, to say the least, and it's a nice change from seeing everything blurred out and colorful in the ether. It reminds me somewhat of Aliens and Giger, with new symbolism of course. Maybe the face is crumbling because it's only a larva or a pupa? I mean, she's got insect written all over her. Maybe that's not even her "final form", and she's still maturing and trying to know what to be herself. That makes some sense.

First thought: (Several quotes mentioned the cracking in her face, which I also noticed immediately.) At the risk of being pedantic, the cracks in the face are on her right side, not her left. I know it's a small point, but Tom is all about the minute details and we should try to keep up with him (as if that's possible!) Second thought: I thought the thing on her head was a bird, until this idea was mentioned: So what's going on with the two hypodermic needles at the top? I don't see a bird there. I can now totally see the hypodermic needles. I still see a suggestion of a bird, though, so I'm not sure what to think. But the needles are clear to me; they even seem to be casting shadows on the whatever they are resting on/above. Weird. Third thought: I only now realized, Zimmy might possibly refers to Kat at this page. Whereas Gamma refers to Annie. Using the double meaning of the English word "see" (as in "look at" or "meet"). This is a good point, bedensis. Thanks for the refresher -- if Zimmy sees Kat like this, no wonder she wouldn't want to come visit her! On the other hand, I don't think Zimmy sees Kat like this all the time, because "Big Nose" certainly doesn't refer to this version of Kat -- there's no visible nose at all!

My first thought was angel. My second thought was insect. My third thought was mechanical. She managed to be nearly every single thing we thought she was going to be! But those aren't bird wings, just look at the wings here. The style is definitely insectile, with veins and cells and a single point of articulation at the origin. How about this guy? I really like Wayne England and there's definitely a similar sharpness. My second thought: Gunnm, aka Battle Angel Alita Even better, Zapan with the berserker body from later on:
