But what does this have to do with the rest of the plot?

But what does this have to do with the rest of the plot? Whatever Tom wants it to, I guess. :)

Did anyone else just tear a hamstring jumping to a "gosh golly ANTHONY HAS CLONED ANNIE AND IS TEACHING THE CLONE MARTIAL ARTS" conclusion? Oh my gosh, I was LITERALLY just coming here to say that. Meanwhile, aboard Microsat 5....

I think there's a reasonably good chance that this is Annie experiencing a memory her mother had. She looks like herself because she is experiencing it. Reasons: Annie hadn't seen her father since she was very young, she has some piece of her mothers spirit and her father looks somewhat younger than here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=815 .

Where do people get this "Annie had not seen her father for a very long time" thing? As far as we know, the last time she saw him was just before being sent to Gunnerkrigg Court.

It can't be Surma - they're in the hospital, I can't imagine that Surma was this active there. To me it looks like Annie at 10 or 11 - not too long before she went to Gunnerkrigg.
Maybe it's a dream, she might have fallen asleep on the rooftop waiting, but I think it's just a memory.

I'm pretty sure the only time we've seen Anthony's face in a Antimony flashback is when he looked up from where he had been grasping Surma's hand, weeping. I think that supports your interpretation, Kriselia. It had to have been an intensely humanizing moment to see, and that's the one time we see his face.

But what does this have to do with the rest of the plot? Tom will likely tie it in nicely like he has masterfully with all other flashback sequences. He probably wants to show us some sort of character trait in 'Tony that corresponds with what Donald has told us this chapter. We just have to wait. D:<

Hahaha, I laughed out loud. Will this joke ever get old? xD I think it already has, but never mind. It might be appropriate here, though, because what prompted that was the same kind of confusion over who the character was that we're seeing here over "Is this Surma or Annie pre-Chapter One?" Tom would probably say that the confusion stems from his drawing skills - that he meant to draw Annie looking younger and didn't entirely succeed - than from anything deliberate. He did say that the problems people were having in recognizing Eglamore in Chapter Seventeen stemmed from his trying out a new drawing technique that had made Eglamore look different than in previous chapters.

Up until now, rounded panel-corners like that have always meant "flashback", whether dream-based or audience-only. I think it's safe to assume that this is a flashback. I seriously never fail to miss the rounded edges, even when it's obviously a flashback. Then someone on the forums helpfully mentions them and every single time it's a revelation. But seriously, the hands and feet on this page are so well-drawn that it's sort of amazing.

Annie last saw her father right before she came to GKC, I believe. In the very beginning it was stated that the reason she came there was because her mother died only a month before, and her wish was for Annie to continue her education at GKC. At that time, Annie still thought she would be in regular contact with him, until she tried calling him and found out he wasn't at the hospital anymore.
This flashback looks to me like it takes place not too long before she came to the Court, sometime between the other hospital flashbacks and when she arrived.
We've seen evidence of her using martial arts before, mostly in the beginning of the comic (like when she threw Winsbury).

Throwing Willy wasn't the only time Annie used some sort of martial arts. In this page she managed to hold down an angry Zimmy. I can't think of any other instances though.

On first glance I thought it was Anthony and Surma at first, but on closer inspection, it's probably Annie. Not only is her hair straight, her feet are also really small compared to Anthony's hands. So unless Surma has the smallest feet ever (or Anthony has giant hands), it's probably safe to say that this is Annie.
