Most people covered what I immediately thought about all this - concerning how beautiful it is and the possibilities of why Blue seems to suddenly sulk (I don't know if being apprehensive is exactly the word I'd choose) Also, after the transformation that cut isn't visible. I think it has to do with the fact that this "form" transcends both the etheric and the material world - my feeling is that this is precisely the "What she really is", and that it is far too fundamental and deep to be influenced by "outside" factors. Will it sound too plain/cliché if I say "this is a visible projection of what we call a soul"? P.S. I've just read this one - great thinking, though I still suspect it's probably over the hair/jealousy thing Another posibility is that Annie did accidentally set the chair under herself in fire, or something like this, and Blue is the only one who happened to look in the right direction.

I would say that calling it a visible projection of the soul is pretty close, like it's a projection of her essence or something, which is that of a fire elemental, or possibly a phoenix.

As one character fom Labyrinths of Echo said, it would be a sad and uninteresting world if people didn't tend to be more than meets the eye. ;D I quite literally did a double-take upon seeing Max Frei referenced by someone outside the Russian-speaking world. Kudos to you sir. (Oh dear there is even a tvtropes page about the series. I'm starting to get curious about how good the translations are.)

My personal guess about blue's uneasiness is that she's part methane elemental.

My personal guess about blue's uneasiness is that she's part methane elemental. LAUGHING ON LINE!, good one man. Still though, we know more about Red than we do Blue, so we don't really know for sure. Given what we know about the faries, I'd say it's jealousy.

That was a beautiful panel. It seems that Blue is worried about losing Red to Annie.

Blue's expression worries me. Is there something terrible we don't know about? D=

I'm going to throw a guess:
Blue is sad because she or her family knew Surma or were especially close to her. Seeing annie at this form made her realize she's Surma daughter, and with this realization and empathy she feels how painful must have been for her to be the cause of her mother's death.
Or maybe sadness because she reminds her of Surma etherical form, but in my opinion it's something Surma related.

That was a beautiful panel. It seems that Blue is worried about losing Red to Annie. It would make more sense if Blue suddenly realized that all this time she pursued less perfect fiery-hair-going-up. I doubt it's this simple, though. More likely something like a conflagration in the material world, Annie's body falling from a chair, that sort of thing. Maybe after opening the eyes Annie will jump still like this to comfort Blue and she freaks out? I'm going to throw a guess I haven't seen at the thread: Blue is sad because she or her family knew Surma or were especially close to her. As i mentioned, unless Blue's age as a fairy was much the same, it's a very probable variant. Then we'll get one messed up heartbreaking / heartwelding / heartwarming scene starting very soon. 2 Tom: Yeah, every possible surface. See, those guess-darts are obsolete: we're switching to flechette shells already.

I wonder why Blue's hair isn't 100% glowy like everyone else's...

My first thought that can be articulately expressed at all was "if she'll crash in like this, Jeanne will have to hear what she got to say That got me thinking, off topic, that she would no longer need her blinker stone to get down there, lowering the probabilities of getting trapped in the ravine again.

I wonder why Blue's hair isn't 100% glowy like everyone else's... I dunno, but I'm guessing the other fairies are excluding her because of it, and that's why she looks upset.

If you compare with the page where Annie uses the blinker stone you'll see it's just a graphical variation. The colours are likely muted to reflect Blue's apprehensions, not the other way around. (Cue "Annie's fire display is stealing power from Blue's hair-energy!" speculation.)

You know, in the context of etheric hair glowy, "Your hair goes up!" is a lot more important now. When Red's hair didn't go up, to the faeries, it looked like she didn't have any etheric stuff going on. As far as they were concerned, she looked like a n00b. She got her hair to go up, and it suddenly looked like she had her hair glowy back. And was thus reaccepted to the cool kids crowd.

I believe this is "that one time" being referred to in the comment. Thanks. Last time around I didn't notice the phoenix shape in the sky above Annie in that strip; unobservant of me!

Aww... Why is Blue so blue?
And I wonder what the faries would think if they knew about the Etheric Spatula?

I wonder why Blue's hair isn't 100% glowy like everyone else's... Could be that the glow is based at least somewhat off their emotions? Happy/excited = glowy Sad/worried = less glowy

It also could be that having someone's physical form look significantly different from their etheric form is disconcerting to them. Especially if (as Red showed in the beginning of the girls getting a haircut chapter) they don't even know how hair works. So if they all think/thought that hair is as vital a part of your body as your arm it might have been hardcore creepy for them to see hers all droopy and junk when she wasn't in the ether. And man I hope Annie gets to do that in real life if she practises hard enough. Can you imagine the pranking potential!? Edit: fixed a typo.

It looks like Red once was sort of excluded, but only by Blue and began to avoid her in turn. Blue was in the company of those two and doesn't seem to be "excluded" currently. Why do you think she is? She got her hair to go up, and it suddenly looked like she had her hair glowy back. And was thus reaccepted to the cool kids crowd. More likely, just Blue's tastes and/or Red's self-image problem. Turquoise and Orchid observed "Red vs. Blue" scenery chewing and didn't react in any way. On the bonus page they treated it as a petty squabble between "old friends". It also could be that having someone's physical form look significantly different from their etheric form is disconcerting to them. Generally, does not look like this - what with fish-boy, antlers and all - but here's a good point. Maybe, for Blue still new at this humanity thing it was unsettling. And man I hope Annie gets to do that in real life if she practises hard enough. Can you imagine the pranking potential!? I can see it...

As someone who likes Touhou, Annie's fire-works power is very similar to Mokou's. Speaking of which, I wonder if Annie could do this.

Perhaps Blue is a Water Elemental? She is "blue", after all, just as Annie is red. In a similar vein - perhaps she, too, lost a mother, as well, at an early age?

Perhaps Blue is a Water Elemental? She is "blue", after all, just as Annie is red. It's the same "old friend" of Red and we saw her as a fairy, remember? Also, IIRC, Tom confirmed on Formspring that boys in that class are ex-animals and girls are ex-fairies. From guestbook:
