What just happened, is that Annie and Jack are now gone without any viewer supervision!

Grrrrr I tried to beat you an I was a minute late. Give up on it mate, you can't beat Max if he's here. : D It's funny how nobody says the word... Embarassed teenagers, heh. ED: we will have a short story about Paz, yay (from the GC Formspring)! Hopefully.

I still think that the reason for Annie and Jack's absence from the pages is metafictional - that the focus is on the other kids at present, and drawing Annie and Jack, even in the background, would distract the reader from Kat, Paz, and the others.

I was under the impression that Paz had run from the room in embarrassment, and Kat followed her, hence the lack of anybody else at all in the last couple of pages.

Well, that was actually less awkward than I expected.
Um, hurrah?

First: it would've been quite hard for Annie and Jack to distract most of the readers from Kat and Paz. Second: notacat is right, but todd is talking about the strips that show us the bar. Annie and Jack are not there on any of them, so it's very unlikely metafictional. Most notable being the last frame of todays comic. It's there for the simple reason to tell us: Annie and Jack isn't here. Monday will most likely cut to them. Which means that the third story might come from one of them.
Gotta love this comic, whereever the story goes, we readers win with it.

Good, so I wasn't the only one who thought of the DWI meme when I saw Kat.
Also, again, Annie seems to be giving that stone to Jack extremely slowly.

Oh my God, steaming Paz! I think I'm gonna die! Guys, quick! The Steaming Rule!
And thanks to everyone who pointed out Jack and Annie are gone. I'd gone twice over the page without paying any attention to the empty stools.

since Paz's embarrassed face is increasing if she runs into something horrible (and embarrassing) as Annie and Jack making out I think her head will explode

In chapter 31, Annie overreacted to news of the reality of her metaphysical/psychic relationship with her mother.
In chapter 32, Kat overreacted to Annie's absence over the summer.
In chapter 33, Paz overreacts to Kat's attempt to cheer her up.
Ahhh, teenagers.
Now that this has passed on to a minor character, I wonder if we will see someone overreact to something Paz does in the future.

Do we have "word of god" that Kat isn't gay? Cuz she totally reads that way, and has for a while now.
I don't really care which way Tom goes with this - there's a lot of potential for awesomeness and awkward hilarity either way.
On a meta level, I think webcomics are doing a decent job at portraying gay characters. I was going to write how I think gay men are still underrepresented (or when they are present, are only for comic relief), but I think that isn't even so much the case anymore.

Do we have "word of god" that Kat isn't gay? Cuz she totally reads that way, and has for a while now. How does she read that way? Aside from the tomboyish style of dress and (perhaps) her short, spiky haircut, she doesn’t strike me very stereotypically “gay” at all. To my knowledge she’s never indicated in-comic that she might be attracted to anything besides the opposite gender. That said … just because she hasn’t yet demonstrated same-sex attraction doesn’t mean she’s not gay. When my sister was just a bit younger than Kat et al. — around 12 or so — she had a friend who was crushing on me pretty fiercely. Years later it turns out that not only is she predominantly into females but she’s female-to-male transgendered (and last I heard living as a man). So who knows. In any event I expect that the point of this exchange is to demonstrate how awkward Paz’s interactions are this evening and not, likely, to spark discussion about sexual preference in fictional tween characters. Edit: Apropos of nothing, I’m amused to recall that this girl would’ve looked rather like a real-life Kat. If Kat had a Kentucky accent. And were somewhat obviously dim. My sister, on the other hand, was so tomboyish that she slobbered over BB guns, wore army fatigues, and carried her own hatchet around the neighborhood; she’s now married (to a man, and a rather attractive one at that) with whom she has a kid.

We knew she is attracted to the opposite gender, but the other classmates not neccesarely. And as you might know, if you are not seen to be interested in the opposite gender, you are homosexual, in many people's eyes.

There is a very high possibility that Kat is straight.

There is a very high possibility that Kat is straight. that is true with 100% of people 90% of the time i half think people are grasping at straws with Kat since Tom has said some person/people in the universe that are gay. Also Kat isn't tomboyish she's straight tomboy

What just happened, is that Annie and Jack are now gone without any viewer supervision! Unless Jack has used the stone to make them both invisible, which while implausible, for some reason seems to me like the sort of thing he might be able to do. (Possibly alternatively he can use it to fly, like he could when he was infested with Zimmspiders. (And like Annie will presumably be able to do at some point.))

So Annie and Jack have sneaked off somewhere. Maybe the third story will be Jack's?

I don't think that Kat is bi or lesbian. I actually think that the better guess would be Paz, with a bit of self-loathing to go with. Her knee-jerk reaction seemed a bit off (why would it be the first thing that came to mind? I guess we'll find out in that story), and I doubt that Tom would present a stereotypical lesbian.

Look at it this way!
Paz is no longer feeling heart ache. She's too embarrassed over accusing her classmate of being a lesbian for that.
Anyway, I would not be shocked if Tom starts slipping in subtle changes for Kat. She tried to change her image. One thing I could see is her growing her hair back out. Acting slightly different, maybe. Little things you might not realize till later when Annie starts questioning what's been up with Kat lately.

She's had a (intense) crush one at least one guy, been quite flustered at the sight of another guy shirtless, It's crushes on two guys plus Muut (who I read as male, but hey, who knows with psychopomps). To my knowledge she’s never indicated in-comic that she might be attracted to anything besides the opposite gender. Uh, except birds, maybe? I got the strange impression she didn't like Muut only because he had his shirt off, but because he vaguely reminded her of Alistair after his transformation. She was also unable to resist Cityface, regardless of how ugly he started out.

I think Coyote may have referred to Muut as male. Although some psychopomps have clear gender while others don't, like the demon-dog psychopomp ( forget the name) who seems to have been referred to as male, but could be female.
The thing though is that nearly all psychopomps are from real mythology (Greek, Egyptian, and Hindu for example) while Tom seems to have made Muut an amaglamation of various Native American mythologies, like he did with Coyote.
Edit: I think she didn't like Muut initially over the whole thing with the blinker stone or possibly them not able or unwilling to take Surma to the other side.

I think Kat is only interested in birds because she started to admire them after the whole Alistair transformation. Seeing a bird reminds her of Alistair's transformation which in turn reminds her of the human boy she loved.
Since we're moving beyond the awkwardness, I wonder what Matt, John, Margie and all the others are doing? Are they just going to hang out in that spot or is there a small hotel or any place with beds so that they can actually sleep?

They did say before they left that they'll have to return to the dorms, just when though isn't mentioned. The place they are at could be a hotel or some club. Good thing Tom hasn't made them break out the liquor despite it being a bar.

Paz is no longer feeling heart ache. She's too embarrassed over accusing her classmate of being a lesbian for that. While I’m reminiscing about my all-too-faraway youth, this reminds me of a bit they’d do on this sketch comedy show when I was a kid — someone would go to the doctor complaining of (say) a headache. So he’d pound them in the hand with a hammer to distract from the headache. (I think it worked.)
