I had thought that this was just a meeting place and that they would soon be headed somewhere else, but with them pulling off their coats, it looks like they may stay for a while.
When does the music start and when does the bartender appear?
To repeat past comments, this encounter went very well to start. Now we get to see whether Jack's question will prove to be him putting his foot in his mouth, or if Annie continues with the super-smooth act.
It's just that: I can't recall barely-teenagers with ambiguous feelings (at least Annie's have been so far) for each other to act so calm and collected. Jack seems to be channeling Cary Grant and Annie has taken up Grace Kelly; woot.

Uh oh, I wonder if Jack is supposed to be THE love of Annie's life... He's a nice kid and all (much nicer looking after the summer!), but I haven't warmed up to the idea of him and Annie yet.
Reynardine, turn into a cute guy and sweep Annie off her feet, already!

Reynardine, turn into a cute guy and sweep Annie off her feet, already! As soon as Annie releases him, he can possess Jack (killing him) and away Annie and Rey go!

I'll confess that I still have difficulties picturing *anyone* as "THE love of Annie's life" - not just because of the biological cycle that she and Surma are part of, but also because she didn't even strike me as prone towards romance. Of course, one of the major points of the webcomic is Annie's "thawing out" from the seemingly emotionless girl she was at the start, so it's plausible, but it's still going to take a while for me to adjust to that.

Ignoring all the shipping issues (seriously, let's not get into making shipping comments that'll start a silly flame war), does anyone else think this page is a juxtaposition of the roles Annie and Jack have apparently developed?
Over the summer, Annie's become something of a girl of the Wood, and wandered within it under the auspices of Coyote. Jack, meanwhile, is a lurker of the Court who also happens to be a whiz with technology and now has etheric abilities (two things that the Court is experimenting at combining). Girl of the Woods and Boy of the Court. Given Tom's other juxtapositions and such in the comic, I wonder if that's going to be relevant in some way.
Will it represent conflict, compromise, or confluence? Or am I overthinking this?

I don't think there's anything I can say about how I feel about this page that wouldn't be an echo of what everyone else has said. Including what I just said, actually.
I do hope this conversation goes well for them. I suspect they're each thinking, "Wow, they're hot! Better act casual....hey, that worked! Oh yeah, I'm good, I'm smooth!" -- which is right about the time something awkward happens. Then you realize you're doing the emotional equivalent of a handstand on a bikeseat when you've just learned to ride, and have no idea how to get back in control.
But I don't mean to sound down at all -- I'm really happy about this page! They are both looking great, expressing confidence and showing and returning friendly interest, and this is all improvement on multiple levels for each of them. Way to go, you two -- good luck on those handstands! ;D

it's interesting that Kat's and Annie's reactions have switched over time. in the beginning Kat used to be pretty open about crushes, not only her child-like one for Mr. Eglamore but her more serious attachment to Aly, but now she seems shyer, more uncomfortable with the idea of being out all night and hanging out with guys. Annie used to be the reserved one and completely uninterested in romance, she went so far as to tell Mort off pretty harshly when she thought he was after her and has shown to be pretty clueless around Smith and Parley. but now she seems very comfortable around Jack, she has very confident body language and behavior. could it be the effect of her spending time in the forest with creatures of all types and genders? She mentioned a green boy her age in passing.

Amazing what time and lack of spiders can do to a guy. He was sort of fun before. Remember the umbrella? This is undoubtedly a coincidence, but does anyone else think he looks a bit like Steadman? Hmmm... The form of his face sort of resembles Steadman, but Jack's not blonde... or such a bishonen for that matter. ;D Well things are certainly going a lot differently from last time. I'm guessing she's not gonna tell him about the whole "unintentionally killing mother, trying to set Eglamore on fire and being unable to have kids" part. That would create one hell of an awkward silence. That depends on him. But only if she would both want to get rid of Jack and fail to set him up for a shop-talk with Kat. Which is improbable. Seems an incredibly foolish risk to take for just a bit of socialization. On the other hand, they *are* adolescents, and that's probably affecting their judgment. ...in other words, the risk isn't a deterrent, it's the main spice.

Holy cow Jack. Nice growth spurt! Wait a sec, how old is everyone supposed to be? I thought Annie was almost 14 before the summer and that the rest of the students are a bit younger, but they all look 15 in this chapter. Craziness.

Jack knows stuff that only Kat (not counting the adults) also knows. I don't know how he'd use it or anything, or even if he would, but still. He knows that. He obviously likes her, so he's probably thought about it. ...Does anybody else get the feeling we'll be seeing a flashback of teen Surma's group soon? Like, for the end of this chapter maybe?

Obviously when Anthony finally returns, he's going to have in hand a cure that will allow Annie to have children without dying, so I say let the shipping commence!

They look so mature and nice. WWHHYYYYY? Loocks like Jack hit a growth spurt over the summer. This makes me really wonder what the characters will look like by the time the comic ends. Long beards and grey hair. Wanna bet? On the girls...

My reaction upon glancing at this page: "WHOA what just happened?"
Jack's not a bad-lookin' fella. THEY'RE GROWING UP. This is crazy.

So my baby cousin is staying with us for a week at the moment, and he's just about to turn 15. I used to change his diapers and babysit him when I was younger, so the sudden shift in the kinds of conversations the two of us can now have is jarring. So right after discussing evolutionary psychology with the kid who used to pee in my face, I check this comic and suddenly find that OH GOD IT'S HAPPENING EVERYWHERE.
Kids, this is not ok! Stop growing up immediately! Stop! It makes me feel old.
Sigh. But in other news, holy shit Jack way to use those eyebrows to their full advantage. Lookit that suave face!

Jack may be acting all grown-up and suave, but check out panel 6. His face just says "she's touching me she's touching me oh god she's touching me"

Seems like all the kids, not just Annie, have matured a bit over summer. Glad to see Annie and Jack can have a friendly conversation without being incredibly awkward about it.
I still think the gang is here to do more than socialize, they can socialize at school. They are up to something.
(and I agree with whoever said this chapter will probably include a Surma & Co flashback).

I'm kind of surprised that no one has mentioned this yet, but does it seem that we are approaching the first of the "three short stories" supposedly included in this chapter? I very much doubt that Annie is going to re-iterate her family history here, both for the sake of Jack and the readers. I think a small tale about her time in Gilltie wood is in order.
If so, then we could be looking at stories from Annie, Jack, and Kat about what they did over the summer (although I'm not sure how many interesting things Kat could get into, with her folks and all). Should prove informative.
Also, Annie is curiously at ease with Jack here. Did her time in Gilltie Wood also make her more amenable to that, somehow? Or did the revelation about her parents help her get some things sorted out?

Should prove informative. Maybe Kat could tell us about the tragedy that befell her head that caused her hair to look the way it does now. (I was *very* disappointed when the cranky, long-haired Kat cut her lovely hair...)

That would be the discovery of Deigo's and the Court's machinations, which knocked her off balance for a while, putting her into a very bleak mood until "A Bad Start", when she found and rescued a baby pigeon and did an about face, I think. The next day, after talking with Paz, she strolled in with short hair and a very much more relaxed outlook on life.

Should prove informative. Her folks who helped Eglamore keep Reynardine prisoner for several years? I tend to think there is much opportunity for her to have an interesting time with them around, perhaps because of them and the myriad of secrets about the court they know.

I tried to restrain myself, but I can't help it any longer. All these discussions of JackxAnnie have forced me to show my hand. I apologize beforehand but I seriously want to talk about this so badly.
JackxAnnie is my only OTP out of any fandom.
Yes, I DO think Jack will be the love of Annie's life. Jack is a little bit dark and possibly dangerous, yes, but that's why I love them together. Annie could die if she gets pregnant? Perfect, I think there's nothing that makes a fictional relationship more interesting than an element of danger and tragedy. I understand the urge to want to "protect" your favorite fictional characters, but personally I want an exciting, dramatic story, and having my characters get an interesting ending rather than a happy ending is my priority.
Basically, I could see Jack nursing a pretty serious crush on Annie for quite a while, but she never feels much of anything for him. Maybe she even hates him a little. (maybe all that already happened.) And then something happens and she likes him, and they have a little relationship but break up because she can never trust him. And perhaps they avoid each other for a while until they're forced to see each other again and Jack reveals he's always considered her the love of his life which is a huge jolt for her because a really serious relationship is still terrifying.
Oh my god no one wants to read my shipping speculations. Just ignore this. But like I said, I maybe do a little bit of shipping in other fandoms, but this is my OTP, I HAVE TROUBLE NOT TALKING ABOUT IT. I feel like people here really hate shippers.

What does OTP mean?
(This is the kind of thing that helps me understand why Tom doesn't like abbreviations. The time you save by typing out the abbreviation rather than the whole phrase is then lost - or more than lost - by having to explain what it means.)

A pretty impenetrable term. Is it "One True" as opposed to "One False", or "Many True", or "Many False", or "Random This Or That"?

What does OTP mean? (This is the kind of thing that helps me understand why Tom doesn't like abbreviations. The time you save by typing out the abbreviation rather than the whole phrase is then lost - or more than lost - by having to explain what it means.) In some cases however the abbreviation comes to mean more than the original phrase did, or carries certain undertones and associations that the full phrase doesn't. For example saying Ten/Rose is your "one true pairing!!1" sounds a bit overdramatic, but calling them your OTP is more shorthand and informal, and also carries associations with fanfiction. It's an easy way to tell people you prefer to read/write material about that couple without making yourself seem like a crazy person going on about destinies and soulmates. I'm a big supporter of acronyms. Not only is it faster to type (when you play as much WoW as I do you tend to appreciate anything that lets you communicate with party members faster) but also allows for the quick expansion of group-specific lexicons which I find fascinating from a linguistics standpoint.
