I doubt that this will be a big romantic chapter. That just doesn't seem like Tom's style. I mean, there will definitely be a lot of running gags floating around. (Will and Janet pretending to dislike e/o, Annie being awkward in romantic situations, etc.)
I'm hoping that Jack got working on something big over the summer, and wants their help with it. He had to do something when everyone was away, and a project is the perfect way to spend more time with Annie.

Kat is asking the (likely) most rebellious and least interested in romance of their group if she's okay with a night out? It isn't that Annie isn't interested in romance at all, she just stubbornly won't admit it to herself or anyone else. ... I read a lot of people writing about this, what is this based upon? Not that I don't agree that Annie is suppressing her feelings. But as of yet (well, before she went to the forest) she's not good at controlling them, if they get loose, so she's better off that way. It would be interesting to see how she'd react now to an intense social situation. ED: Oh, and by the way I never stated she isn't interested in romance, just that she's the least interested in it among them. Exactly to avoid this conversation. : D

I'm not entirely convinced Paz and Janet were blushing. Their facial expressions seemed comfortable enough, and I seem to remember blushes being generally sort of pinkish in previous chapters? But maybe not.

Ann has the coolest "fine with me" look ever, even her hair flows with the situation

Hope Put enough gags in and it is a romantic chapter, but I agree that it won't be just a romantic chapter. Something else will happen too. Unfortunately the only hint as to what that might be is the chapter title.

Since the chapter is titled, "Faraway Morning" I think it'll be about the group trying to stay awake after they're done with... whatever they're going out to do. Just a theory, though. I just woke up.

Storytelling? After three short tales, no one can think of any more, and the morning is still a far way off.

I just woke up. Yes! It will be a rehash of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the children will have to stay awake until morning to avoid being captured and replaced by alien doppelgangers!

I think there're other reasons why Annie is OK with it and Kat isn't:
Annie has not had any parental figures in her life for years. She's had to rely on her own resources (with some help from Kat and the others). It's a boarding school so the others have to become independent as well (but they still have their parents) whereas Kat is living close to her parents so she's never had to spread her wings.
The fire elemental part of Annie makes her a little more implusive whereas I get the impression that Kat's interest in science stems from a love of order.
Spending the summer in the forest has given Annie a confidence boost (people are more likely to explore and take risks if they are more confident) as she pushed her boundaries and it turned out well. Apart from the fact that Kat's holiday was spent with her parents (so she didn't get a chance to show herself what she could do), the fact that Annie chose the forest over her probably sapped a bit of her confidence.
{edit}Another thing I just remembered:
Another reason why Kat may not be too happy is that they're staying out is that Annie is forcing Kat to grow up. Part of the reason Kat was annoyed with Annie about the summer was that Kat was afraid that Annie may get hurt. She also had to rescue Annie when she was pushed off the bridge. In short, Kat has started to think like a parent. She is a child and, like most children that age, has rebellious feelings but, when she sees how close to death Annie came, can see why rules are there.

Tom's done an excellent job of depicting the cool dominant girl/trying to be cool sidekick relationship that is so very common in schools. Annie and Kat are closer friends than most of those pairs, but in moments like this, you know which one is the self-confident cool girl and which one admires and wishes to but can't quite emulate those aspects of her friend. It's bizarre isn't it? Annie is the cool girl now! Kat and Annie used to be partners in being weirdo outcasts people wouldn't talk to. They didn't care about others thinking ill of them because they had each other. Now Annie has turned into this fire headed forest girl that spends her summers chilling out on the shoulder of Tree Bark. Kat is still Kat. The robots might think of her as an angel, but Kat herself hasn't gone under any radical character changes. Not as radical as Annie, at any rate. Even when they were both social outcasts, the relationship grew over time to have Annie as the dominant cool one as between Annie and Kat. I'm just impressed because it's been a very authentically developing friendship. Fiction so often likes to have close friendships like this as between two equals who equally admire each other and equally look out for each other but that's rarely true in real lifeand it isn't true of Kat and Annie. They're close friends, they look out for one another, but when push comes to shove, 95% of the time Annie does what Annie wants and Kat goes along with it. (And the one time Kat got angry about it, on Annie's return from the forest, was ironically the time when Annie had the best excuse for her behaviour).

Hey, now, don't forget the time Annie was being a Debbie Downer in Doctor Disaster's spacemonaut simulator, and Kat got angry and told her to lighten up.

Annie has crawled out from under her rock since then.
Kat is worried about how her parents would react.
What happens in the simulator is just approved fun, and so Kat can push Annie onward (way back when).
What happens out at night, now, unsupervised with a bunch of boys whose main objective is probably personal time with the girls, is another matter.
