Anyways, rebellious streak incoming!
I think she has always had the rebellious streak (like running around barefoot, and other things), but she hasn't really expressed it until now.

Knowing Ysengrin, it's something violent and/or combat related. Probably quite impressive, but also a bit scary. Or she learned to fly. Like her dear mother. |

Knowing Ysengrin, it's something violent and/or combat related. Probably quite impressive, but also a bit scary. Or she learned to fly. Like her dear mother. Firstly, do people realize that Antimony hates being compared to her mother? A lot? She looks annoyed a lot over it. There's a difference between looking at people and seeing them. Surma and Antimony are only superficially similar. Surma was a tomboy and her most recent flashback portrayed her as a consummate playacting spy. Antimony is neither. She is mostly reserved and dislikes the crass political manipulations of the adults; those of her mother included. And she gets distinctly annoyed at Jack's fickle lovestruck affections. Frankly, I'm surprised that Coyote mentions Antimony's temper at all. What temper? She's pretty much the deadpan ice-queen for much of her character arc. Surma punches a boy to escalate a situation. Antimony does a bit of judo to de-escalate. They're incredibly different. One person is out for your blood if you piss her off or will absolutely ruin you through a sweet face and a sweet smile. The other is a empathetic ambassador. |

Kat definitely disapproves of Rebel Annie. The breach between them is not 100% healed.
I suppose that their mutual suspicion of the Evil Jeanne-Killing Food-Tracking Court doesn't extend to Kat being negative to the Court school, what with her parents and all.

No, in-universe of course. It's terribly ironic watching Coyote, Eglamore, Anja, Coyote and Reynardine project like crazy onto Antimony and then watch the audience do it too. It's all about how Antimony hates being in mom's shadow. It was a massive part of her motivation for running away to the Forest to begin with. It's a plot point. An incredibly important one. It's so ironic that it cuts me and I am bleeding. |

I suspect that Kat's disapproval of Rebel Annie has something to do with that fact that Kat's matured over the summer as well. I suspect that her worry about whether Annie was safe over the summer let her see teenage high-jinks from parents' and teachers' points of view. From Kat's point of view she almost lost her friend twice -- when Annie got pushed off the bridge and when she ran away this summer. [...] There's a difference between looking at people and seeing them. Surma and Antimony are only superficially similar. Another thing they do seem to share is a similar disregard for the rules. We can never say whether she would have followed a similar path to her mother later on in life had things been different but, now that she knows Jeanne's story, she is not as commited to the the Court as her mother was. |

It's not a subject which comes up often, but for all practical intents and purposes, Annie is parentless. She's not exactly "Li'l Orphan" Annie. Her father could still be out there somewhere, but he hasn't been seen except in flashbacks. He hasn't been an actual influence on her development since before the beginning of the comic. She's had several symbolic parental surrogates ranging from Eglamore to Ysengrin, so that helps. Fortunately, for the most part, she has been fairly well-adjusted, to coin a cliche. Still, the rebellious "what are they going to do?" line does seem logical for someone in her position. ;D |

Also, she lost some respect for for the court last chapter, and that makes her less willing to follow authority. Maybe her age is a factor too. All in all, no need to assume a supernatural cause for children disobeying. |

I don't really hope this is the case though philosophically speaking, you're referring to Annie's individual personality as something which exists outside of reality, where the reality of the situation is that Surma "passed the torch" to Annie when she died. However, Annie always has been Surma's daughter, and certain parts of her personality would have been passed down from Surma to Annie well before that. That's part of who she is. Without the "spark," she wouldn't be Annie, she would be somebody else and her "natural personality" would be different as well. She does seem to be changing, and perhaps certain "Surma" aspects of her are emerging, but you can't separate the girl from the fire spirit, so to speak. EDIT: Also, what Blackmantha said. |

Just a thought. ah okay, sorry I wasn't clear. still, you're sort of dividing her into two parts, one of which must be the "real" Annie. it seems to me that these parts are halves of a whole. whatever you want to call this phase she's going through (rebellion, delinquency, being a teenager), it's still part of her. it doesn't require a battle for her soul |
