Wow. That last panel is downright chilling. Great work, Tom. Yeah, I just keep coming back to that last panel. Tom, your art is always good, but this is a cut above IMO. Very nice. A bit. Surma's always been portrayed as too spirited and strong-willed for anyone to treat her so...possessively. I've been giving him a pass because I can understand his having to believe that everything he lost was worth it for a shot at her. He has to believe he was right to try, or what was it all for?

By the way, I tried reading this while listening to O Fortuna, and it made me giggle at inappropriate times. I recommend it.

'Bout friggin time! I'm glad to see that Renard's going to hear the truth, even if it's only in the heat of an argument. Better this way than to keep him in ignorance out of deference to the Court's top brass.

I think Anthony is a pretty cool guy. eh abandons daughters and doesnt afraid of anything. But seriously, I don't think calling him a "cool guy" is very apt. Tom has said that, while he was around Surma and Annie whenever he could be, he was pretty distant. I'm guessing he never really connected with Annie emotionally. Well ... we still don't know why he left, although it doesn't seem likely that whisking himself away so immediately and for so long -- while maintaining complete radio silence -- is fully justified. Still, his usual emotional distance doesn't mean that he never made any connection with his daughter, nor is it necessary for him to have been distant at every moment and in every situation; clearly Annie loves him very much. I can only suppose she has some reason for that. Never having realized how defensive she is about her father, I can see how she may have been irked by some of the attitudes she faced -- all this about Surma and her suitors, as if Anthony never existed or was a simple jerk. Has she been made aware of James's opinions re. Anthony? One can hope! From what little I know of storytelling, I really do suspect that Anthony'll be more sympathetic than one may rightfully deduce from what we've seen so far.

Annie's been different since the Jeanne visit at the Annan waters, I noticed. Something changed. A more swaying mood, from silly to in rage.

Y'know thinking about how things might get uglier... Looking back Kat did say she was gonna swing by Annie's place so that they could go get something to eat... This night may get even worse if she catches Annie cheating off her homework... this is gonna be a LONG night Annie's been different since the Jeanne visit at the Annan waters, I noticed. Something changed. A more swaying mood, from silly to in rage. are you referring to the very first encounter, or are you talking about their most recent encounter? if its the former than I don't really think we've seen enough annie at that point, it was fairly early in the story And there are not many things that get Annie angry. If your talking about the later, well that was only last chapter, so we haven't seen enough to judge if there has been a change of annie getting more easily angry... frankly, speaking negatively of her father IS one of the few things that Annie has shown to get angry over; Jones once started getting on Annie's nerves when she spoke poorly of her father... Reynard is stomping on a really sensitive nerve welcome btw

Reading back... yes. She doesn't seem very changed. She is probably simply flustered by some truth behind her mother, the meeting with Jack and then Renard bolting on her father. That just seems a little too much for a young girl, does it not? Oh teenage years.
Thank you.
P.S: I should change my display name to Fire Spike for the chapter.

I suddenly have a feeling that Kat walks in and chaos ensues and then Annie runs away.

My own personal prediction: Annie doesn't go with the Donlans, and instead stays at the court again, not really WANTING to be around anyone. While I can't speak to the female mindset, I remember around that age when I was upset at someone/something, Severely introverted little Fuzzyone just wanted to be left alone. I think that might be Annie's feelings on things as well.

To me, it seems as if Renard was shocked more by the level of Annie's cold rage as such than these less than hot "news". It's more surprising that the old trickster didn't get half a clue after observing Annie's reaction when Eglamore let his tongue out (and much less than this). It wasn't unpredictable that Annie will stop ping-ponging words and try to hurt him seriously, one way or another. Excrement, meet fan. The truth hurts. And fossilized at that. Considering how hard the fan was hit. Or, perhaps, we'll find out that what the Court knows/is willing to tell isn't exactly correct, and Surma does/did love Rey, at least to some extent... Well, obviously. But what sort of "love" Surma meant and what Renard though she meant aren't necessarily related in any way. Just like what he meant and what she though he meant. Ya i don't think we've seen this level of anger in Annie. There's a lot of fury in that face Mort was chilled only slightly less. Though whether he or Eglamore got the worse part... Rey is consistently talking about Anthony in the past tense. Just observing. Hm, a good point. I vote for Annie shouting out the truth at Rey. But I am usually terrible at guessing so just ignore that. Provided she knows it to begin with. So I guess what I'm saying is I hope Annie punches Renard in the face. This seems to be worse than a punch. Second, that Anthony dedicated 12 years of his life to curing Surma's illness. That sort of devotion doesn't come from the selfish and self-absorbed. Easy: challenge. But the point is, even before this he left the Court and followed Surma (in self-exile?). While he looks like a proper Court man - dedication, lack of patience for things "not properly scientific"... Tom has said that, while he was around Surma and Annie whenever he could be, he was pretty distant. Isn't this an usual thing for those who feel themselves clumsy around people? Normally mostly limited to teenage awkwardness, but not everyone gets over such issues. Never having realized how defensive she is about her father, [...] Has she been made aware of James's opinions re. Anthony? Errr... in Chapter 7 immediately after Eglamore made such a mistake she "carved him to rights", did you miss it? It was one of her greatest moments. And the most manipulative, too.

So the plot of this chapter is 'it's Annie's time of the month?'

So the plot of this chapter is 'it's Annie's time of the month?' No, becoming furious because your pen ran out of ink might be caused by hormone fluctuations. Annie is just fed up like anyone else would be!
