Also, interesting that Kat told Antimony she could copy her work and yet she's sneaking around. I guess she's ashamed to admit that she needs it? Maybe Annie lied about Kat giving her permission? (Tom's comment at the bottom of the page hints at that, though I take a lot of his "bottom-of-the-page" comments with a grain of salt.)

I am hoping we get some serious insight into Annie's relationship with her father. It's never really been discussed. Yes, I was hoping this too. But I think my expectations are equally divided between Antimony saying something that will tell us a bit more about what she thinks about her father/Antimony saying something about Surma to hurt Renard/Antimony not saying anything except to put Renard in his box. Also, interesting that Kat told Antimony she could copy her work and yet she's sneaking around. I guess she's ashamed to admit that she needs it? If you reread the last couple of pages assuming Kat gave permission, it no longer looks like she's sneaking around. She didn't even hide the workbook in her bag in case someone else saw it. (P.S. Thus begins another day of 'click, wait three minutes, click wait three minutes' so if anyone wants to get into a lively discussion about the effects of gamma rays on a stuffed wolf toy, please do!) (Um..in another thread of course!)

On Monday's page, we learn that Annie has the (previously unrevealed) power to set things on fire with her mind by making that face.

Hm. Did Kat give her permission, or is she lying to Renard?
In favor of permission: her affirmative statement; that she seemed not to be hiding the book; that Renard has quite a lot of interaction with Kat and thus has opportunities to bring it up or ask about it, implying that it would be careless for Annie to lie.
In favor of lying: Tom's statement at the bottom of the comic; that she appeared to be hiding from Kat the first instance (that we saw) of cheating; that it would arguably be out of character for Kat to allow Annie to copy a significant amount of her work.
I lean toward "lying", but there's no way to tell, I suppose.
She seems fairly defensive about her father, doesn't she? I'd always suspected that he was an absent parent, but maybe that wasn't (always) the case.

In favor of permission: 1) Kat probably wouldn't let anyone but Annie see her workbook but she trusts Annie. 2) I doubt Annie would breach that trust by sneaking the book entirely. She might sneak a peek at some answers but not take the whole book to her room. (That doesn't seem as bad but its not really different) 3) Tom LOVES it when we're left guessing! He'd say "Did Kat really say that" even if the answer was yes! In favor of lying: 1) Annie may have convinced herself that if she asked, Kat would let her...so she never actually asked and assumed she could. (Since she's not hiding the book, she may be lying to herself.) 2) Annie may have been telling Rey this same lie for a while and now she's got to maintain the lie. (this isn't proof, more of an assumption.) I lean toward... sitting on the fence. I can't tell one way or the other.

Yiiiiiiiikes, I wonder if the next strip will be an all-out screaming match. :/
I really appreciate the expressional device Tom is using through this chapter. Each incident ends with Annie's expression getting more and more ticked off. After she leaves Kat and Anja, she looks uncomfortably disturbed. After leaving Jack, she looks determined. After getting back to her room however, she looks downright angry. At the end of this page, she's now at murderous rage-face. This is not a good day for Annie, methinks.
As for the Did-Annie-really-get-permission argument, I'm hesitant to say that Annie isn't lying. that look on her face in the first panel looks to me like something a child saying that line when a sibling sees them playing with daddy's drill.

Haven't you guys ever talked to a twelve year old before? It's so obvious she's lying. Plus we seen her copy Kat's work without her permission.

I have a feeling Reynardine just crossed a line. It's interesting to see Annie actually acting her age for once.
As for the "did Kat really give her permission" thing, I'm going to bet she didn't.

Ha ha! The way Rey starts his statement with "Well!" and refers to Anthony as "that man" makes him sound more like Antimony's mother than her father. Can't wait to see what goes down.

That is a definite "Annie gonna haveta slap a stuffy" face. BEAT HIM DOWN LASS. Oh! An angry face! The angriest face! and Annie totally deserved that shot. But given the emotional ammo she just acquired, I'm sure she's gonna use it...to everyone's regret...

Awesome update. Annie calls him Renard, now fully aware of the origins of his newer name. Excellent. And that last panel - I think that's the closest to this that she's ever looked.

In this one, Annie is interrupted before she can finish saying Rey's name... today, she used " Renard" to show she was angry. Do you think she was saying "Hello Reynardine" in the way her mother would say it, remembering it was her pet name for him? She's actually smiling before she walks in so maybe she likes the idea that her mother gave him the name he claimed as his own.

(Tom's comment at the bottom of the page hints at that, though I take a lot of his "bottom-of-the-page" comments with a grain of salt.) I took that comment as a prediction of the question everyone would be thinking after reading Antimony's statement (an accurate prediction if it was). But yeah, I do wonder if she's telling the truth, given that Kat hasn't been present (in this case) or apparently aware (in the previous one) that Antimony was looking at her work for answers. I thought it might just be a case of Kat saying that Antimony could look if she needed to, Antimony declining politely, and then regretting it later and not wanting to have to ask. =/

She's actually smiling before she walks in so maybe she likes the idea that her mother gave him the name he claimed as his own. I personally think that she was going to say "Hello, Reynardine!" both out of habit and the happiness of finally being home. I also like that she was cut off, though. It could have gone either way (though with the amount of, ah, mastery over her expression she's shown in this chapter, dropping a "Renard" out of the blue may have been out of character).

Amazingly enough, we might get the answer to this soon! Kat's meeting her here at some point. If Annie hands her the book and says "Thank you", we'll know she didn't lie.
If she hides the book when Kat comes in.... uh oh....
I don't think Rey would snitch on her though... honor among tricksters, I suppose.

Damn, she got served. Cue her saying some mean nasty things to Rey, I guess. Though, actually, I think we're about to find out what the Fire Spike is. She does more-or-less have pyrokinesis, though we haven't seen her use it as a weapon yet. Maybe if she gets mad enough, she could engulf someone in fake flames and really turn up the heat? I imagine the sensation of being burned alive is almost as bad as it actually happening, too, since you never get to the third-degree burns that destroy your nerve endings.

That fire stuff is weird... she can make an illusion of a forest fire, she can make a fire that feels hot unless you're a lazer cow, and she can hold a burning rock in her hand for light.
I guess if she wants you to feel it but not actually be damaged by it, she could. I'm not sure if she could do damage with it. For that matter, do you actually feel warmer or do you think you feel warmer?

Either way, it seems like she could do some fairly serious damage with it if she were so inclined.

I imagine the Fire Spike being a primarily etheric power, something that would give her the power to face down Jeanne without getting killed. Of course, before she has mastered it, Renard might be in some danger.
