I believe we should start dividing up the first chapter for the music parts to determine what parts would be best with music, and to find out who should do what.

Ok. Sorry I havent been replying lately :/
I think the main theme should play the first time Annie says "Gunnerkrigg Court." Your school theme would play throughout. And Shadow2 and Robot themes for when their respective characters are featured.

Music works best when it's played to underline specific events, playing music all the time is pretty boring - in my opinion. However, chapter 1 has a part in the beginning were Annie tells what happened during the first weeks - this is a good opportunity to put in some music imo!

It depends really. Sometimes background music's got to be one of those things you don't notice until it's there. I mean, in Timesplitters 2 there was a level editer in the console version, and there was a glitch which caused the music to disappear if you played a minigame on the Temperal Uplink device. I never realised how important the music was to the atmosphere of an arcade style FPS (of all things).

Guys- what kind of notation programs are you using to write your music? I usually use Sibelius, but I've been having problems with it recently-i.e I don't know where the disk is and am going to need to reinstall it soon.
Are there any cheap/freeware notation programs that do the same thing?

I use Cakewalk Snoar Homestudio 4 to write music. What I really like is the Track view which allows me to copy and paste large sections at once. But I usually use the Staff View to actually notate things. I used the program to create this:
I was thinking about using the beginning of the tune for something, but I can't think of what.

I've decided to open up "auditions" for various theme tunes for the characters. The ones needed for right now are for recurring characters like Kat (who can also probably share the theme with her mother and perhaps even her father), Eglamore, Reynardine, and Robot. I'm looking for original tunes here that can be used like basic library music, rather than event specific things.
I have yet to think of a voting time but I'll keep everyone up to speed.

As a fellow composer... I think maybe that is too much thematic material perhaps? I'm not sure that the pace is going to allow for the establishment of that many motifs without feeling disjointed... I mean give it a shot if you want, but... I don't know.

I suggested this because I ran out of good ideas for melodies awhile back. My Muut theme was actually an old melody I thought of a long time ago when I got my first piano. And Digital Domain has snippets of a tune for a character of mine that has nothing to do with Gunnerkrigg Court.

Well you know, I was thinking, that not every moment of the final product has to have music behind it too. There may be whole scenes where silence is better. And some music will probably be more mood-setting than actual thematic material, wouldn't you think? That might ease the burden on you a little.

I see what you're getting at. In fact, I was suggesting the audition for both theme and mood music.

I have a question! Is there likely to be any music in this project which requires vocals? I wanted to audition for a speaking role but couldn't afford to buy a fuctional microphone until all the ones I thought I'd be suitable for were gone. However I am something of a singer so if I could be useful in that way I'd love to get involved.

I could see some choral "aaahhhh"s going on in some ghosty parts... but Sandjosieph would be the proper one to actually answer your question.

Okay, YouTube upload was giving me some problems, but I beat it into submission and got this uploaded.
Sadly, there's nothing that can be done about the loss of audio quality thanks to YouTube. But everyone be assured, the original MP3 Oboid sent me sounds even more awesome than this.
With no further ado, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMye-8guAjY

Seriously. That was cool times a thousands. It gives me shivers to hear one of my own tunes arranged like this. I have to ask, does your music program use soundfonts?
EDIT: This is how impressed I am. I failed to remember that you had mentioned you used Apple's pro soundfonts. Now I wish I could use them.

Glad you like it! (Think you might have me a bit confused with bonzairob, I've never actually used any apple stuff in my life!) I use sonar pro 8 and east west quantum leap symphonic orchestra gold. It gives you the options of all the great articulations, like the horn rips i used at the end of the arrangement!

Oh...
Do you use SoundFonts of any kind? I'd like to try to make all music have consistent instruments (I'm not too thrilled with the electronic sounding stuff I have right now.) Also, if you would like to, I'm actually thinking about putting you in charge of some of the more dramatic parts while I handle all the basic background stuff.

If you're after consistency you could just send me the midi files of the pieces you've already done and i can render them with the same samples as i used in the arrangement. I don't use soundfonts much, never really knew how to utilise them well!
BTW, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here, as i'm pretty new to the whole Gunnerkrigg experience, but i'd be really interested in doing some cues for the project!
(Also about the lullaby - what a great tune! The arrangement pretty much wrote itself.)
