I suspect the heatsink analogy can't be carried too far - that would lead to some strange consequences for Gamma.
Also: the rain may have been useless to Zimmy not because it was artificial per se, but because it had been drained of its etheric energy.

Well this explains quite a bit, except the part about where Money Spider and the others come in. I think either Jones isn't telling the whole truth here (perhaps because she doesn't know) or that there's something that happened to Zimmy that the court doesn't know about.
Also, panel four is one of my favorite things that Tom has drawn. I think I've found myself an avvy.

A typical GC answer--it cements some ideas that were previously just speculation or wild guesses, and then raises even more questions. Why is Zimmy connected to the elutherium this way? How is Gamma able to diffuse her powers? And who could be keeping secrets from Jones? What are they doing with that etheric energy the power station absorbs?
That fourth panel is absolutely gorgeous, too. Very, very neat page.

So natural rain contains etheric energy, while water in piping doesn't (Tom said showers don't help either). Therefore, this lake must either be natural, or especially made to collect etheric energy. On a completely separate note, a girl with robot parts may or may not appear around 30 pages in the future. |

Hmm, it is a (tortured) computer analogy. Most overloaded computer processors these days have throttling/thermal protection circuitry that under-clocks them if the temperature goes above/close to the thermal design power. I think it could be more properly Zimmy pulls energy out of the surrounding environment in much the same way as the power station, and needs Gamma to dissipate it harmlessly. Without Gamma. the energy is released in an uncontrolled manner, which manifests as a phase-shift into birminghell.
Maybe the sudden loss of surrounding etheric energy due to the power station causes some kind of runaway reaction with Zimmy. Sort-of like how the loss of coolant and the low-power conditions at Chernobyl caused the disaster there.

Since water treatment removes pathogens and stuff, perhaps the reason showers don't help is because the water has had all the "living" components destroyed, and that removes the etheric energy. I like the 'it was drained of ether and thus didn't help' theory for the lake thing. Plus the it not having any little buggers in it if it comes from the pipes (as a water quality analyst I can attest to this being true. Drinking water from the tap should have NOTHING but chlorine and flouride in it, else someone is in big trouble.) But this raises the question: why doesn't she just go to a lake and, I dunno... have Gamma upturn a bucket over her head? Lots of buggers and algae in there for etheric energy. Or is there something about clouds that makes rain water work for her? Like.. sky ether or something? But then the power station rain would have worked regardless of pre-treatment. Guh.  |

Well I think that the clarification that Zimmy works as sort of an ether-node between worlds is, if not new, at least the first time we've had it spelled out for us exactly what's happening with her. And also the explanation that the connection or juxtaposition is for Zimmy a stressful and painful one explains why the manifestations are malevolent. In a sense, Zimmingham is the manifestation of Zimmy's ether-migraine. |

These theories about rainwater remind me of the Mikveh--the pools used in Judaism for ritual purification. Part of the requirement for a Mikveh is that it have to be filled with naturally occurring water, that is, from a spring, well, river, ocean, or rain; and it can't be carried or pumped in. The idea is that the natural water has power because it comes directly from God; whereas if a person or machine handles it, the water is profaned--that is, rendered ordinary. The ether station almost seems to be a highly literalized example of this.
