Oh, Jack knows what he's doing. He came prepared. The question is, why did Annie and Renard need to tag along in the first place? They haven't done anything that Jack couldn't have done either by persistence or violence, save for accessing the control room without detection.
The question is: can Jack handle the jolt he's about to give himself?

Million Dollar question: What does he think this will do, anyway? He believes it will boost his developing Ether power to higher levels, allowing him to do the stuff that he sees Annie doing. He's probably not right, and in fact this whole deal is probably the etheric spider "whispering in his ear" and itself hoping for the power boost so that it can do bad things.

it will probably give the spider enough power to actually do stuff. then annie will pull out her tooth-knife and fight it in a climactic battle.

Million Dollar question: What does he think this will do, anyway? I think... he's trying to draw Zimmy out of hiding. Remember what happened the last time the power station was in use? It's a trap, and Old Scratch here is springing it.

Yeah, I think this is probably it. Either he wants to drive Zimmy nuts until she comes to the station, or he's probably testing whether the station was what sent him, Annie, and Zimmy to Birminghell. Fear the evil genius and his PROCESS OF ELIMINATION! HAHAHA! Also it would explain why he's been so willing to sloppily leave debris of the guardbot and almost the door behind, if that was Tom's intention.

I too, believe that Jack is trying to see if the station will "send" him to Birminghell or not.

My guess is, he's hoping the thing will suck the ether-arachnids out of his head. Which will not, regardless of whether it works, end well. You'd think the thing would require a code, or something...but then, this place isn't known for its great security.

Personally, I think he's just doin' it for laughs. Crazy Jack is Crazy, and all that. Also, it would be AWESOME to see some sort of parallel to Coyote in that respect.

Oh my goodness, this is getting interesting...!
I wouldn't be surprised if Jack either died or effectively died (permanent coma, for instance) in this chapter. It would definitely be a good moment of character development for Annie if that were to happen.

My thought #1. He's created some sort of virus to destroy the ether array My thought #2. He's going to jump back into the twilight zone and needs Annie as a guide.
(hoping for #2)

Speculation: the ether-warping is so intense that there are strange time anomalies when the power station goes off.

Fuck the spider. It's probably just a visual aid. It doesn't do anything, at least we have no proof for it to do anything. Stop claiming it's going to take over the world before we know what it actually does. Which is, probably nothing.

Million Dollar question: What does he think this will do, anyway? Based on years of experience in the computing industry, I am able to predict the text of Wednesday's comic: - "A newer version of STARTUP PROCEDURE is available. You must upgrade to the latest version to proceed. Upgrade now?" - "STARTUP PROCEDURE v1.5 requires you to upgrade your operating system to SP 4. Upgrade Operating System now?" - "Upgrade procedure of Operating System requires you to restart your computer at this point. Restart now?" - "The Genuine Advantage component requires you to validate your original purchase. Please insert original disc into drive D: now". - "The drivers for Drive D: are obsolete. You must upgrade to version 1.2.7 to proceed. Upgrade now?" - "Driver upgrade requires you to restart your computer at this point. Restart now?" - "Java 1.6 required to run STARTUP PROCEDURE. You currently have Java 1.5. Upgrade Now?" - "Upgrade of Java requires you to restart your computer at this point. Restart now?" - "Upgrade of STARTUP PROCEDURE complete. Run now?" - "Out of Memory".

Stop claiming it's going to take over the world before we know what it actually does. Which is, probably nothing. Yeah I don't think the spider is really doing very much controlling. That said, whatever it is doing cannot be good. Additionally, I maintain my previous theory that Jack is gonna turn this thing into a giant tesla coil and start vaporizing things just prior to causing a catastrophic system failure. I mean, this thing is more or less an experimental reactor, which do not usually have as much of an engineering safety margin as a production power plant would. So, if the court's industrial safety standards are anywhere near as bad as their security, well... let's just say it won't end well. He probably is doing it to draw out Zimmy, though.

I remember a page where Zimmy was attacked by a spiderish monster that broke through the wall. So I am not so sure it's just a visual aid.

One other thing:
If Annie pulls out Coyote's tooth while the plant is running, it could start hoovering up etheric energy from the thing. I mean, we've already had the suggestion made that the blade is apocalyptically powerful, so if it starts feeding all that energy into machinery not designed to handle it, that could be really bad.

The Zimmy theories make a lot of sense and they're probably right, but there's always the off chance that he was planning to do something like this anyway. He's obviously been studying the power station for a while, since he knew what time it would activate when he showed it off to everyone else.

In the Formspring site, Tom said that it was in fact a big old spider, and not just a visual aid. So it is in fact really there. and what the heck is Jack up to?!

Rather unlikely - but maybe he's trying to exact revenge on Annie? Hoping that if they go to Zimmingham, it'll "infect" her as it did him? Remember, he IS crazy and sleep/nourishment deprived.

I thought it was interesting--when Annie and Jack left Zimmy's Birmingham, they both seemed to have little scribbles around their eyes. Annie's has gone away since then, but Jack's has actually dug in and started going all black and malevolent, which seems to hint at differences in their moral or spiritual strength.
The difference between Jack and Annie's personalities seems to hint at Jack's personality being a lot more fragile.

Or that Jack encountered something there that Annie did not. Something that came back with him. Annie recovered because she wasn't being constantly exposed to the energies of Sunny Birmingham. Jack, on the other hand, has a piece of it stuck on his head.
As for what Jack's doing: causing trouble.

"Oh, by the way guys, there is something else I probably should have mentioned..."
What on earth? Couldn't he have just waited until they did another one of their 'experiments?' He could have asked Annie to come then as easy as any other time. This way they just move closer to Ground Zero, and conceivably attract a WHOLE lot more attention. What's the point of sneaking into the place if you're going to loudly announce where you are?
I predict the arrival of Buddha and friends soon.
So is this why Jack wanted Reynardine along? He knew what Reynardine was, does he think the power station will affect him in some way? Obviously he wants to trigger another 'event' like Zimmy's, but will this even do that?
