What game is he playing here?

It seems pretty straightforward to me. He's giving Ysengrin crap, pretending that he (Coyote) didn't know that Annie was in the forest, and acting as if he thinks Ysengrin brought her into the forest.
It might also be a way for Coyote to show Annie that Ysengrin's final statement was more than just deference to Coyote. More specifically: Coyote is showing Annie that Ysengrin won't hurt her even if he (Ysengrin) didn't know Coyote was there. "If you were anyone else" takes on a different dimension when viewed with the notion that he meant something other than "if Coyote weren't stopping me".

It looks like a game of "Tick everybody off at me for kicks!" Heh.
I'm curious now...I wonder if it was Coyote who insisted Ys had to wear clothing? Such a human thing to do, and Ys, being as anti-human as he is...

The general gets told off for not guarding the forest properly, I believe. Their defence mechanism is not as efficient as those from the Court.

On the other hand, Coyote must know how to bypass all the defence mechanisms, so he probably took Annie through them. But then Yssie thinks he's getting told off for not guarding the forest properly, which I'm sure is just as lolarious in Coyote's head. Annie, don't sit on him, he's up to something.

Well, if it's Ys task to watch out he didn't really do a good job considering that the sign has been for a while (probably not more than half an hour though). And Annie looks rightfully angry with Coyote, not that he cares.

Well! Annie passes with flying colours! Coyote's suspicions are confirmed: 1. Ys won't harm Annie even in his absence, and 2. Antimony is one tough little girl.

I wonder if (and how) this 'joke' will change Annie's opinion of Coyote. She will probably be less trusting.

I am just waiting for Annie to slap him at least a few times at some point in this chapter. It would certainly serve Coyote right.

This page has got me wondering who runs faster; Wolf-Rey or Coyote.

But we have to wonder what, if anything, Coyote had planned to do if he turned out to be wrong about #1. Or if Annie had invoked The Spankies.

I think Annie was too scared to do Spankies to Ysengrin. She wouldn't even have poked him in that state.
The thing about Coyote is that he wants to teach Annie, but that would be far too boring for someone as wise and clever as him. Everything has to provide entertainment for him, or what's the point?

Confirmation of what some of us suspected all along: Coyote is no liar, but he doesn't need lies to deceive his marks. Even though Y thought Coyote wasn't there, he knows that Coyote gave Annie a standing invitation to return.

Yeah. It didn't click that Ysengrin should have seen that gigantic sign in the sky and done something about it.
I had noticed at the start of the story that the forest's response sign did not go up.
Then I forgot.

This makes me like Coyote even less. I had thought maybe he was trying to bring Ys and Annie together somehow, but once again he's just dumping on poor old Ys.
Trickster gods are not your friend. They only pretend to be so long as you're amusing, as Annie still is and Ys isn't.

This page makes me suspect even more that Eglamore had the right idea when he was uneasy about Annie going into the Woods (and wonder again why Jones - who's no fool, and clearly well-informed about Coyote - thinks it's a good idea for her to do so).
That, and Coyote deserves membership in the "Magnificent Bastard" archetype all the more after this performance.

He's training an attack dog. Being sure to humiliate and punish Ysengrin every time he's in the presence of outsiders, making it seem like their fault (and his for not staying in line), while showering him with "gifts" that make him totally dependent on his loyalty to the master for even basic functioning.
Kinda puts the rest of his actions, and their unintended consequences, in a new light. What's body-swapping Reynardine but a spy who can't (or won't be willing to, unless he goes homocidally insane) hide from Coyote? What's Ysengrin become but a weapon of no power without Coyote's blessing? Wasn't it Coyote who isolated the forest from outside observation? Gotta wonder what he's doing with the rest of the forest inhabitants, and towards what end.

I think Jones is the kind of gal who doesn't shy away from things that need to be done. The court needs a medium and it's possible that she think that's what's important. She seems like a very rational woman and what is risk compared to the higher well-being of the court?
