Kat deflected a piece of metal off her face (just like Jones with that sword) a second before that panel. Those are the sparks.

I'm sure someone else already made this connection:
Some time ago we had robots with fake hands, whe were the boss in that particular siruation. Now we have a robot with a fake face who seems to be king of the robots. Do we see a pattern here? Whichever robot is closes to human has the highest rank? (See also: Boxbot. Very far from human, hence terrible ;D).

Truly, he hath drawn the saddest of faces, as was told in the prophecy. Now a great drought shall befall us, and the crops shall lie fallow for many a harvest.

Man. I just changed my avatar! How was I to know the saddest face was coming?
This is excellent. I fear that this meeting may have consequences that Kat and Annie could not have foreseen.

At least he was moved in the right way. It's a relief that he's not some stony-hearted tyrant.
And this might give Annie and Kat the opportunity to find out at last why the painting has such an effect on the robot community.

Is it true? A robot that surpasses Robox in his awesome glory?

PREDICTION: At the end of the chapter when Kingbot leaves, Kat will burst out laughing for about 13 minutes straight.

For a second after seeing the first two rows of panels I was afraid kingbot had cut out Jeanne's face and glued it to his faceplate. He'd gain absolute(r) power over the robots.
Boxbot could do this too, of course.

This chapter is fuckin money. I robot that draws facial expressions on his own face is brilliant
I wonder what the deal is with this group of robots. All these guys have green eyes. There was a discussion earlier about this and not all the robots at the Court have green eyes. Obviously, there is some connection to Jeanne's eyes, hinting that these robots had some special significance to Diego. I'm sure this will all be clear to us in due time

When the robot in the last panel said "The saddest face!" I laughed for such a long time. I love how Tom balances out all this tantalising Jeanne-related development with robot-related hilarity.

what if kingbot gives kat ideas to make a face with full expression for Robot. so well made that only the fact that it is metal clues you in to the fact that it is fake.

yazzydream: Thank you. I keep looking at Kat's expression, and I can imagine she's holding in a laugh, but the funny interpretation in my mind says "She's in LOVE!" I guess because it's easy to imaging those stars are hearts. That would be an odd turn of events.

I wonder what the deal is with this group of robots. All these guys have green eyes. There was a discussion earlier about this and not all the robots at the Court have green eyes. Obviously, there is some connection to Jeanne's eyes, hinting that these robots had some special significance to Diego. I'm sure this will all be clear to us in due time The only robots that I know of that don't have green eyes are the blue eyed ones by the "tomb" and the laser cows' eyes. Laser cows can be put aside though, because their eyes are used for shooting lasers, not just looking, so that might be where the added red color comes in. As for the rest, well...I have a bit of a wild spec theory, but I don't know if it's actually crazy enough to belong in that thread. All (excluding LCs) court robots that truly function around the court seem to have green eyes. The fancier ones, that only function as part of the scripted fight scene, seem to be the only ones with blue eyes. In www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=641 at the close up of Jeane's and Skywatcher's eyes, I don't think there is any plot importance here, but importance to us, the readers. Here we see that the current court robots' eyes have the same color as Jeane's eyes. The blue-eyed robots seem to have features where Diego made them as human-like as possible. The green-eyed robots, however, are more cartoony and boxy, almost like they were made in a state of grief. The blue eyed robots also have a small blue chamber right below their sternum as seen here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=417 while the other robots are just simple smooth box shapes. King/Queenbot seems to be a mix of these two ages of robots with the green eyes, blue panel, fancier-ish gold body, and the ability to change his facial expression. Here is my wild spec: Diego was in love with Jeane; He created human-like robots in his spare time. Jeane dies - Diego makes TicTocs to protect others. Diego is grieved and angry at the court for not having done anything to save Jeane (like how they tried to tell Kat when Annie fell). His sadness causes his robots to be of a lesser class, but also have green eyes and say "She died and we did nothing" whenever Jeane is mentioned to remind him, and the Court of their failure to save Jeane. If this were to be true: A) King/Queenbot is older than (s)he looks B) Royalbot's age might mean he remembers Diego and his grief over Jeane (which explains why he has the "saddest face" right now) C) We're about to have a whole lot of questions answered.

Your theory is interesting, except that you didn't take into account the fact that the robots have maintained themselves since the time of Diego's death, and that is what necessitated an evolution to simpler forms. I'll pull up the link if necessary.
I do however think that it is conceivable that there is an intentional design element that the robots after Jeanne have green eyes. I'm with you on that. I just have to question the part about the simpler designs being because Diego was in grief. We already know what the reason is for the simpler designs.
On the subject of Kingbot, I'm pretty sure that the other robots (given that they self-repair) just gave him gold arms and a crown because, well, he's King.

Note also that the Model B's eye-nipples change color as well. I suspect that many green-eyed robots would also be capable of similar color change. As for Adminbot, I suspect he was designed to look like he's wearing glasses, to give him a scholarly appearance.
