And vice versa. Possibly.
I second that!

I said normal air. The picture of the laser in that article specifies it's only visible because of airborne dust.
um...you do know what dust is, right? "normal air" has plenty dust in it. as long as there's carbon-based life forms that shed dead skin cells on a regular basis, or anything that would cause dirt to be thrown into the air, there would be dust. I think you mean "pure oxygen" which, yes (duh), would not have any solid matter in it for light to bounce off of. of course, if we were talking about pure oxygen, the lasers would make it ignite, regardless of them being visible or not.
Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Death & Resurrection, Separation, Conjunction, and Circulation are the necessary tools of an alchemist, and my necessities for life.

Please don't condescend.
Laser beams don't appear usually in normal air, with normal quantities of dust. If you get a particular dusty atmosphere, perhaps they will. I imagine that the foggy atmosphere in #604 may work well too.
But I didn't consider fog "normal air" either. Perhaps I should have used the word "usual" instead of "normal".

No, I most certainly didn't. Pure oxygen would never be "normal" air for earth.

I see, anyone who disagrees with you is condescending. Watch out Robo Alchemist, next he'll start accusing you of "threatening" him. It never changes.
Aris, with all due respect, you clearly didn't even read the article.
All particles can scatter photons. Even with just the atoms of nitrogen, oxygen, and other elements found in "normal air", there is a degree of scattering.
Lasers may not be visible in a VACUUM, but they are certainly scattered in any gas that contains molecules, not just dust. Dust helps, but, if you read the article, you'll see that it has nothing to do with dust. Next time don't just read the captions of the pictures.

Oh Aris, when will you ever get over your obsession with trying to make me look bad? It worked once, but your disruptive ways are starting to catch up with you.
People (not you, but other people) can disagree with each other without condescending.
Oh? Then why'd you accuse Robo of condescending? Let's not forget that this little side-track started because YOU tried to pull on him the same crap that you pull on me: accusing people of malicious intent against you as a way of defusing and ignoring their valid comments.
Really, Aris, don't you understand how disruptive that is? We were having a decent conversation until you had to pull out the "I'm insulted" card again.

Because he didn't only disagree, he also condescended.
I have no beef with him. People can ask other people to change the tone of their comments, WITHOUT making it personal like you always do, when people ask you to change your tone.

My conversation with Robo Alchemist was still civil, despite the condencending tone of a single sentence of his, and despite my polite rebuke about his tone (again in a single sentence).
Then YOU butted in with paragraph after paragraph and post after post. People that want peace try to *LIMIT* a conflict. People that want conflict ENLARGE IT. Robo Alchemist was civilized. I was civilized. You aren't civilized.

I'm pretty sure that (once again) you're the one who made it personal. You ALWAYS make it personal.
But I'm not going to continue this in public with you. I've learned from experience that the more I respond to you, the more I'm just giving you an opportunity to twist something I say into something you'll take grand sweeping offense to and then call for my head on a platter... so, for my part, this "aside" ends here. Though I'm fairly sure you'll be unable to resist getting in the last word after me.
Back on topic, in as neutral words as I can find so you won't moan about being personally insulted:
The article talks about the scattering of photons by molecules, even specifically nitrogen molecules, which make up 70-something percent of the atmosphere:
Quote:
The amount of Rayleigh scattering from a single particle can also be expressed as a cross section σ. For example, the major constituent of the atmosphere, nitrogen, has a Rayleigh cross section of 5.1×10−31 m2 at a wavelength of 532 nm (green light).[2] This means that at atmospheric pressure, about a fraction 10-5 of light will be scattered for every meter of travel.
The strong wavelength dependence of the scattering (~λ−4) means that blue light is scattered much more readily than red light. In the atmosphere, this results in blue wavelengths being scattered to a greater extent than longer (red) wavelengths, and so one sees blue light coming from all regions of the sky. Direct radiation (by definition) is coming directly from the Sun. Rayleigh scattering is a good approximation to the manner in which light scattering occurs within various media for which scattering particles have a small size parameter.

Genuine question: Anyone else here (other than Casey) has a complaint against me?
If more than one person has a problem with my attitude towards them, I will review my posts and seek to correct my tone appropriately. As long as it's only Casey complaining, I will however assume that the problem with me is Casey's, not mine.
Please feel free to PM me or respond here about such problems with me, and I will gladly accept such criticism. (Please provide links of specific problematic posts, so I can review them more closely, in such case).

Then YOU butted in with paragraph after paragraph and post after post. People that want peace try to *LIMIT* a conflict. People that want conflict ENLARGE IT.
I'm glad you pointed this out. I made 5 posts since you started this personal crap. Three were directly on topic talking about Rayleigh scattering, and two were in reply to a direct attack on me by you.
YOU, on the other hand, did not address the topic once, instead levelling -six- different direct insults at me:
Quote:
you've repeatedly proven yourself incapable of discussing anything at all.
People (not you, but other people) can disagree with each other without condescending.
Casey, you are an ass.
WITHOUT making it personal like you always do
Then YOU butted in with paragraph after paragraph and post after post.
You aren't civilized.
So, who is REALLY the one trying to enlarge the conflict? I tried to end it once, you wouldn't let that happen. Now I'm going to try to end it again, watch:
ARIS! GET OVER IT AND LEAVE ME ALONE! I DON'T WANT TO LISTEN TO YOU TRY TO INSULT ME AND NO ONE ELSE WANTS TO HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY ABOUT ME! TALK ABOUT THE TOPIC OR SHUT UP!
You're not the moderator, Casey. You're just an ass.
You know what, whatever dude. You win. This is so not worth it.
If you ever come down long enough to want to actually discuss the topic, let me know.
Oh, yeah, right, I know by saying that I'm just opening the door for you to say (as you said earlier in the thread, several times) that I'm not capable of discussing the topic, just insulting.
...even though throughout the last hour, I'm the one who kept trying to discuss the topic, and you're the one who kept ignoring the topic and insulting. Yeah. Funny how that works.
I'm putting down the keyboard and walking away. If you want to continue to fight, or make stealth edits to your posts, to continue to try to beat me down, despite the damage that does to the boards in general, then you're on your own buddy.
You've got a comeback for everything. But I'm not going any further. I tried to get you to stop doing to Robo what you do to me, and I seem to have succeeded in that at least.
But if you want to trash the place further, you're on your own. I'm not going to help you.

Soo, I hear there's this comic with LASER COWS and a woman deflecting a sword with her cheek! How about that?? Pretty weird, if you ask me. Stories which deviate from our physical normality should just not exist. Or else our minds will be blown forever, like brain egg-yolk spilling into cybernetic eggwhite and making a tasty omelette du fromage.

I've been glad to see a dryad (another character from Greek mythology) -- in this chapter. Last one we saw was WAY back in the 2nd chapter with the minotaur Basil, who uniquely enough for other early characters (the Shadow, the Robot, Mort, Zimmy, etc) didn't become a recurring character -- and I guess we also had the brief glimpse of Hermes/Mercury in the montage of psychopomps young Annie was acquainted with.
My favourite all-time goddess is Athena. Goddess of civilization and human knowledge and cities and technology, I can see her taking the side of Gunnerkrigg in its dispute against the Forest.

Heck with the Olympians. You really want a party, go find Eris.

Depending on who you believe the first Greek god was either Oceanus or Chaos. It would be pretty cool if one of them came into the story, but I'm guessing that, for a while at least, we won't see any major gods. Apart from Coyote we've only seen creatures so far (dryad, minotaur, valkyrie), and while Odin was mentioned (indirectly) we didn't actually see him and don't know the method in which Brinnie was supposed to meet him. Given how she left it may well have been back in the ether/astral plane/god dimension/Denmark/wherever. However, we have met Coyote, so there's space for other gods to show themselves. Who's next do we think? I just thought of some Wild Spec that I'll go post in regard to this.

Personally, I'm partial to Pan (whose nature somewhat resembles Coyote's)....though I do find most all of Greek myth (hell, just myth in general) fascinating.
Soo, I hear there's this comic with LASER COWS and a woman deflecting a sword with her cheek!
Sounds like a shitty ass comic to me. I wish there were mods in this place, and not just that asshole who makes the comic abusing his power all the time.

Ah. See, he just appeared, even with a smile, and here's two "Jack'ed out" cases. Now that's a superpower. BTW, somewhere here was that fine boundary between "roleplaying" and "replaying"... anyone saw it? Oct 18, 2009, 5:58pm, Rasselas wrote:

By the way, wasn't Athena also sort of war-goddess - for the part dealing more with the strategy and less with the melee? Funny that ye should mention her, because once Court already got a valkyrie sent by Odin - and... well, now there's some dispassionate lady who deflects blades with her face, apparently likes the tricksters' company and is permanently "not beholden to anyone". So i has a lingering suspicion...

Yes, the cool thing about all these gods is that they really can't be compartmentalized neatly: they're more like real people in that way. She was a goddess of civililization and human endeavour, especially of craftmanship and handiwork -- she was also the goddess that was willing to use military might when needed AND was also willing to make peace when that was more beneficient for the cause of civilzation.
Unlike Ares who was just a undisciplined warloving jerk.
Athena was also a big daddy's girl, and Zeus' favourite child - the only one he allowed to use his thunderbolt.
But to get back to the topic of Gunnerkrigg - no, I doubt we'll see any big gods anytime soon (other than Coyote and the psychopomps that is). I think Tom himself mentioned in one of the question threads that Coyote is the only real deity planned to have a big role any time soon.

I think we need approximately 3 and a half angry, fluffy pandas as mods to keep this misbehavin' author in check.
Oh, didn't Athena end up swallowed by Zeus as a baby, causing him a horrible headache until she broke out of his skull? It cracks me up. It makes sense, too, for the goddess of wisdom to come from the ruling god's head.

Not quite, but close enough. Zeus shallowed Metis, who was already pregnant with Athena, because of a prophecy that if Metis gave birth the child would overthrow Zeus (or something like that, I'm fuzzy on the details).
Zeus defeated the prophecy by making it so that Metis' child was born of him. And as I said, far from overthrowing him, Athena was a big daddy's girl.

Ahh, it was Cronus who ate all of his children successively after their birth, until Zeus was replaced with a swaddled-up rock and was spared. I got my myths all mixed-up.
