Wow, Carver.Eggers can apparently run as fast as an ATV at top speed. How fast do those go anyway?

Yeah, that was brilliant. I love the expressions in the last panel especially. The Suttons just look bewildered, whereas Eglamore just realized he's been had. Awesome sauce.

Also, Annie is starting to look a LOT more like her mother.

What stood out for me most on this page was how cute I thought it was how Bob shielded Marcia from the heat of the fwoosh. The next thing that stood out for me was wondering why Annie is suddenly wearing John's ballcap. Is this a possible AnnieXJohn lead-in???

Also, Annie is pretty Badass.

Yeah, touching back to something I was saying in the last discussion thread, the scope and breadth of Annie's ability is becoming ENORMOUS. Not just in scale, but in complexity. So far it seems she has focused mainly on fire effects. But if she can make illusory fire with no heat, can she make illusory heat with no fire? Could she, in effect, make someone else think that they are on fire? Because you know, it's just a hop and a skip from that to MIND BULLETS.

You know, all wizards start with tricks like staring fire. It's quite universal for fantasy settings.

I love the way Annie's been dressed this chapter. I've liked the attention to detail shown in the clothing/fashion for almost all of the characters this chapter.

Also, I could not help but think of this video when Annie comes out of that inferno.... I was thinking of something similar, but different. Additionally, the ability to set things (and people) on fire ala Stephen King's firestarter would probably be pretty close to the most devastating combat magic conceivable. I mean, you could trump it by, say, strategically nudging an asteroid or something, but really that's not terribly useful on a tactical level.

And here I thought she was going to make an illusory fire over where Kat was to act as a beacon.

I think Annie just had a Crowning Moment of Awesome. The Bismuth hat was a nice touch.
I love how Marcia is all like "Oh noes my trees" but doesn't appear to be at all concerned about the possibility of any students being caught in the blaze.

This page is one of the most badass things ever. Seriously. Look at her she is so calm and chill and the grown-ups are all like DAMN WE'VE BEEN HAD.
Also, didn't someone say in the last thread that soon enough we'd see Annie surrounded by her own blinker fire and completely unharmed? Nice call, whoever that was!

As they say in Girl Genius: Nize hat! And it is, too. The hat really looks good on her. Works great with that outfit. Anyway. In the words of a great many people... GOTCHA! Did you expect the kids to stand around and do nothing, James? Train a girl as a mage, she's going to use magic. You're just lucky she figured out it was a trick.

Annie will need to talk her way out of this one quickly, if she doesn't want another week of detention, or worse. (A lot of that, of course, will depend on whether the children really were being kidnapped or if it was just a trick that the teachers were pulling.)
Pity that Tom still needs to spell things out in the commentary at the bottom. (I don't think that the story's that difficult to follow - at least, as long as you read it as a serialized graphic novel and not a "gag-a-day" strip. Maybe the people who express their confusion over the story are reading it as the latter.)

Maybe the people who express their confusion over the story are reading it as the latter.) I find it amusing when he does that, really. But that may just be me. Also I suspect that him spelling things out is at least as much to clamp down on insane speculation as it is to explain to those who don't get it. I'm sure that without today's comment there would be all sorts of theories about Annie being a fire elemental or something popping up to explain why the flames don't bother her, along with all sorts of other crazy ideas. If they can get there that quickly, there was no reason for them to go through the act of leaving the kids "alone" with Marcia. If this wasn't a trick, they can clearly travel so fast that they could have handled whatever emergency came up elsewhere and watched over the kids as well. But I don't think Bob, at least, can get around that quickly, so it seems pretty clear what's going on. The teachers have been school'd.

Annie is so cool in this one that she inspired me to delurk. Lightning struck me, and i just HAD to perfect this epitome of awesomeness. The best way? Scary Shiny Glasses.Best served with a glass of pwn-resolve-music like this one. Used every time the protagonist resolves a case in the most over-the-top way ever and leaves everyone dazzled by the shades rays of awesome. Oh, yeah. he's the kid.
