I'm sorry, but in the last panel are we seeing *Annie* leading *Kat* towards the campfire? As in, towards a social situation with her classmates?
I would have thought that flying [robot]pigs would have been more likely to happen. This is some interesting character development.
If that's even what she's doing, she might just be standing there watching? I don't know, it just seems hard to reconcile this what we know about Annie's character. "Hm" indeed...

And Annie still doesn't get it It's not that they don't like talking to you. It's that they don't like trying to talk to you if the only response they get is "okay" *walks away*.

Annie's face-contours have noticeably softened up this chapter. When this whole story is over, we're gonna need to put together some year-by-year photos of everyone. Edit: everybody gots to draw suffs for everyone else and put it in the art thread! As much as I want to get right on that...was there a clause for Annie joining in without any prompting? I don't recall one. Does this mean everybody loses?

If Tom's comment is referring to Annie's 'Main Babe' line in the third-last panel, wasn't that Kat's invention?

Yeah, but it's a bit more corny when Annie says it, because Kat was playing a "tough guy"-image when she used it which fits well such "main babe" type of talk.

When I read this, I thought to myself, 'Well I suppose we'll be finishing the chapter soon.'
Then I remembered Janet was still missing. Is it just me, or do none of the students seem to be excessivly alarmed about this anymore?

Probably because the chapter's currently dealing with Annie's estrangement from the other children, rather than about Janet's disappearance.

As I mentioned yesterday, I wonder whether Annie's attempt to get closer to the other kids will be that successful. She isn't familiar with the kinds of things that 12-13-year-olds are generally keen on, and I don't think that she's skilled enough at acting that she can fake it. Maybe she's still young enough to overturn the consequences of her upbringing at Good Hope - but I'm not certain of that.

I imagine there will be some conversation about Janet at the fire. Winsbury will pretend to be unconcerned. He will fool no-one.

I don't think I really put a clause in my wager for if Annie volunteered herself to go sit by the fire... I guess no one really thought she would. But let's see how it plays out by the end of the chapter.
Maybe we'll just -all- have to make a piece of art, since we all sort of lost by not believing Annie had it in her.

Is it just me, or do none of the students seem to be excessivly alarmed about this anymore? Her existance is slowly being erased from everyone's memories. Soon, no one will remember that there even was a student named Janet. Except Winsbury who will get more and more upset trying to find her and everyone else will think he's gone insane. Or should that go under Wild Theories? Well, everyone who bet one way or another, I think. Luckily for all, I didn't get involved because the badness of my artwork tends to make eyes bleed and people start babbling in ancient languages about guys named Cthulu.

I love this page, the friendship between Kat and Annie is so sweet, the way they each try so hard to make the other feel comfortable and happy.
I kind of feel like they won't get very far into socialising with the others before something happens though. Maybe they won't even reach the campfire before Janet leaps out screaming about being attacked or Marcia shows up wearing a bedsheet over her head and saying "Woooooooo!"
Or maybe the kids will decide to form a search party to find Janet and Annie and Kat will save the day!

Annie joining the fire of her own volition... wassat mean for the wager? I just re-read the terms of the wager. Wager is on because Annie just did the "fire thing." If the chapter was to end here, those betting no one would invite her would win. But, in usual Friday cliff-hanger style, we'll have to wait until Monday to see if anyone around the fire invites her to join them once they get closer. And Annie still doesn't get it It's not that they don't like talking to you. It's that they don't like trying to talk to you if the only response they get is "okay" *walks away*. Quoted for truth.

I'll start working on one soon so I actually have one to put up by the time the chapter's over On the other hand, I have no tablet and no desire to use a mouse for this, so I'm not wholly certain how I'll get it up...

That's my current plan, but that's assuming my scanner works. I may need to mail it to someone (hint hint) and have them scan it in, but this isn't a solicitation for mailing addresses just yet.

Annie may not even realize that many of her classmates don't like trying to talk to her, because she routinely gets all the social interaction she feels a need for. In fact she probably categorizes and mentally isolates settings to reduce the impact of social interaction, so she doesn't overload. (I do this.)

Yay! Let's all just be happy that Annie singlehandedly lifted all the depression in this chapter and proved that making friends isn't so bad! I mean, this is the first time we've seen Annie smile in what feels like forever.

Annie joining the fire of her own volition... wassat mean for the wager? She did "the fire thing," so the bet is still on. That was the first condition. The original phrasing of the wager dictates that the deciding factor is not whether Annie goes, but whether she is asked to stay, I do believe... So far, nobody has asked her; she invites herself. Therefore, if nobody asks her to stay before the end of the chapter, Casey loses the wager*. It's still possible that he will win, because the others will have to react to her in some fashion when she arrives. Quite suspenseful! -fans self- *Since everyone appears to be drawing anyway, it's rather irrelevant at any rate, ahaha~

Maybe John is hesitant to talk to Annie because he has a crush on her. AnnieXJack shippers unite!*urk* *strangles self* No. ...but, technically, she just handed him a blinker. Also, when John carries a blinker stone, only his shadow is clearly visible, but when it works as a bonfire, we see the shadows of logs and kids (and some very vague darknessnear those logs). Meaning, the strong light source is between him and would-be bonfire. That is, Annie first made it blaze right in John's hands excluding him to give him a light source, then re-ignited it on the ground so that kids got heat they wanted. Edit: clarified

That is, Annie first made it blaze right in John's hands excluding him to give him a light source, then re-ignited it on the ground so that kids got heat they wanted. Oo, nice catch. They could just have an electric lantern in the middle, but I prefer your idea. This is the best route Annie could have taken, I think. The options were both of them stay in the tent, Annie get Kat to go to the others by herself, or both of them go. The first option would make Annie feel guilty about keeping Kat away from making more friends, even if Kat doesn't see it that way. The second option clearly wouldn't work because Kat just wouldn't leave Annie on her own just to have a conversation with a bunch of other kids, because she prefers Annie's company, plus -she- would feel guilty. This third way is the best way because Kat gets to join in, and Annie gets to work on being more social hopefully people will be less nervous of her after a good chat, or as good a chat as they'll get at the moment. You can even see when Annie makes the decision to go over. If she was going to join them from the start then why would she give John the blinker stone? She would just go over there with it. Between panels 3 and 4 I can imagine a pause where she realises the only sensible path for the two of them to take is to join those sitting by the fire. Either that or she just wanted a bit of time for the short bit of dialogue in this page to be private rather than in front of the others. That's also quite possible.

I wonder if Annie will find out at the campfire that the other kids were already excluding Kat before she came to the Court, because her parents were teachers and out of envy over her better grades, and that it wasn't just because Kat made friends with her.
