So these bound dogs are essentially a taxi service for shadow-men?

And now we *really* gotta wonder what the shadowmen were trying to pull in Surma's time.

I wonder if it's the same dog tree as Ties'. How do they ensure the links are broken? Maybe the forest is just biding its time...
Also, the forest is the only reliable place to get trees? Or is it just that Young's Park is specifically for ex-Gillitie plants?

The shadowmen could just be using the dogs as a means of getting from point A to point B (Gillitie). The dogs probably go through the court (like in chapter 22) because it's quicker and/or it's in the way. If so, where's point A?

Considering the length of time that Robot's arm spent in decontamination (about a year, I would estimate), I have to wonder what's the deal with the cherry tree from Ch 6. Its hand-like arrangement of branches suggests that it may have a similar origin, yet it's much larger. Either it was about that large when it came to the Court, or it spent a longer time in decon and grew to be that huge. But why?

Ok now that the purpose of the tree dogs has been revealed, theres something that's been bugging me, what happens to the forest people when one of their transports is taken down? I mean, they imply theres has been tons of incidents like that inseide the court, shouldnt there be a lot more creatures like shadow 2 roaming the court?

At a guess, minus a shadow to hide in, they'd just die, like the shadowman in 119.

www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=557That comic does indeed show that some shadow men escaped into the court when the dogwoods were destroyed. I've always wondered if Shadow2 was one of them, or, considering how young he is, descended from them.

The dog tree makes me a little bit sad, gnarled and twisted in what seems like a dying position. I think it might be the dog that got its leg chopped off in the flashback chapter, the hind leg has some sort of an abrupt cut.

It is sad. At least Robot's replacement arm seems to have gained a new purpose. "Always good to be useful," I'm sure he would say.

haha! Awesome page! Awesome answers! "What happened to Robot's arm?" Check! "What is the purpose of the dogwoods?" Check! I rather like that once decontaminated the trees still maintain their shape. Here's a question: what do you think would happen if the trees were NOT decontaminated? www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=557That comic does indeed show that some shadow men escaped into the court when the dogwoods were destroyed. I've always wondered if Shadow2 was one of them, or, considering how young he is, descended from them. I wouldn't be surprised if that WERE Shadow 2 in the forth panel there, and it took Kat's and Annie's interaction with him to actually learn to talk. We don't know how long the glass-eyed men live, he could be 50 years old and still considered a child.

Here's a question: what do you think would happen if the trees were NOT decontaminated? I've got a theory. I think the answer is something similar to what the crashed tic-tock is doing in the last panel here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=278I know Ysengrin is supposed to be lying here (having picked up the bird right away, not waited a few months), but I think the principle is still valid. The tic-toc has rooted itself and started to grow uncontrolledly. I'm guessing Gilltie trees would do the same, and maybe start walking about to boot. I also think that flashback is telling us how shadow 2 got to the court. The way I saw it, there was only one survivor.

"Coming from you [Jones], that disturbs me greatly." Maybe Jones' current body is very different from her original one?

My interpretation of that line has always been that the "that" in that sentence referred to her statement that she hadn't "seen anything like it". So the Headmaster, IMO, was saying that Jones has seen so much, that if this is something she hasn't seen before, then that would be very disturbing.

I think that tree is the first (or one of the first) thing(s) to be decontaminated, and the Court at that time doesn't yet understand how long something needs to be decontaminated. Then, it is kept there to fine-tune the decontamination climate. Heh heh. Bob said the m-word. *Le Gasp* Haha... there should be a frowning!Kat in this page I wouldn't be surprised if that WERE Shadow 2 in the forth panel there, and it took Kat's and Annie's interaction with him to actually learn to talk. We don't know how long the glass-eyed men live, he could be 50 years old and still considered a child. Well, Shadow 2 does have a grasp of English, albeit written. That means he had spent some time in The Court to learn English words. My interpretation of that line has always been that the "that" in that sentence referred to her statement that she hadn't "seen anything like it". So the Headmaster, IMO, was saying that Jones has seen so much, that if this is something she hasn't seen before, then that would be very disturbing. Well, slightly off-topic, but the last frame in that page is perhaps the only time we see the headmaster truly looked concerned.

Anyone else noticing how this is, above all else, a trophy garden of severed limbs and dead corpses from Gillitie? I can't imagine any Forest supporters would be too happy if they saw this, and wouldn't be surprised if there were some people in the Court itself that think its weird and even plain wrong.

What is the origination of the habit of writing adjective-exclamationpoint-name? Because I've seen several people do it now and I personally find it rather irritating.... as if our language needed any additional bastardization...

It's from computer programming. I don't know which language. Basically, you have an object that you define, like English. It can pick up different attributes in the course of the program, like texting, lolspeak, proper, hillbilly, or AfricanAmericanVernacular, and then behaves differently while attached to that attribute. So texting!English is different from proper!English. Someone who actually programs can probably give you better detail.

As a resident overly-zealous Jones fan, that was my take too. I wonder, if Jones is REALLY a robot....does she a have a predecessor down there in the robot room? I recall one of those bots resembling a woman somewhat... And more on-topic...I wonder if Bob and Marcia are taking care of those seeds from "Fangs"?

I bet this is a large part of why Chuckles is so hacked off at the humans, no pun intended. All the trees are his, and they're up and ruining his lovely little pets.

At a guess, minus a shadow to hide in, they'd just die, like the shadowman in 119. Take another look at that page. Eglamore's glowing sword thing casts a sort of reverse-shadow on the bridge. It is this 'shadow of light' that kills the shadow controlling Robot. My guess is that the sword is a kind of anti-shadow man weapon, capable of doing damage on the same 2-dimensional plane they live on. At first when I was reading this page, I thought they'd see the cherry tree. But Robot's arm is a good find as well.

Didn't Word of Tom directly say that the shadowman from the bridge did in fact die because of the sudden lack of shadow? The sword just served to royally mess up Robot.
