The older generation of GC students
« Thread Started on Jan 23, 2007, 10:16am »

Based on the photograph in http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=103 --

Back row:
Mr Eglamore
Donald Donlan (Kat's father)
??? (Antimony's father)

Front row:
Surma (Antimony's mother)
Anja Donlan (Kat's mother)
???

Who is the mysterious sixth person?

Are all the GC teachers former pupils? Who else was around when this lot were growing up? How far back does the school's history go? The suicide fairies are surely not a recent creation; their name "Gunner's Crag" may be an older version of "Gunnerkrigg" rather than a mistake or mispronunciation. The library is evidently quite old (and it has an accompanying labyrinth) as is the bridge entrance. Despite the high-tech nature of parts of the complex, there is a lot of history here.

Will there be another group of six in the current generation? Seems like there are more girls than boys in the story at the moment. Perhaps the sixth person in the photo is something to do with Gamma.

What is Antimony's father's name? Can't help but feel this will turn out to be important. We still don't know where he is right now or what he's doing.

I think someone mentioned that the last girl resembles Gamma.

Carver's dad's name is Anthony, as mentioned here. Also, I can categorically say that the unnamed girl in the photo is in no way related or connected to Gamma.

Good point about "more girls than boys in the story". So far, the only boys whom we've met at GC are the infamous Winsbury, and Sullivan's John (we know almost nothing about the latter, though he certainly has a very intriguing name).

Don't forget Mort. He counts as a boy, probably. A dead boy, maybe, but still. He seems to be mostly comedy relief, though.

Do ghosts have gender?
Anywase, I was thinking that #6 was related to Gamma, but, guess not. It might just be a student that Tom threw in to round out the picture... Yeah, right. We do know that Carver's mom could see paranormal activity (a la Muut) (oh, wait, I'm totally assuming that, aren't I?) Well, there went my analysis... Um, WEll, Elgamore does call Carver 'Surma' when she falls! [120]

I don't think they have a gender or else..... well... yeah.
And yes there are so many characters that just pop up in the comic and disapear but I'm pretty sure they'll find there place in the story at some point - like that guy who caught the girls "red handed" in the cherry tree room (Chaper 6, page 7)

I couldn't say why, but the mannerisms of both Shadow2 and that robot guy give me the distinct impression of males.

Shadow2 is definitly male, in [129] & [130] he's describes as 'he' by the suicide fairies. Also, he's supposed to be 'young'.

In terms of overall characters there are roughly the same amount of males as there are females (yes, both Mort and Shadow2 are male, as are Robot and Reynardine). As for why it seems there are more female students: It is not uncommon for younger kids to lean towards mixing with kids of the same gender.

Since when? I've always found girls to be a pain to draw, especially women.

We have seen some inter-gender mixing, but, it's kind of the stuff you expect from middle-schoolers. (They were keeping it secret, pretty shy about it overall...) Um, I'll check the comic numbers on that when I get a chance later.

Tom; curious, but do you read some of these and think that we're going a little overboard in analyzing your work?

There goes my theory about Gamma and whatever... I bet we'll all find out later, though. I can't draw men so well...because their face shapes arn't as soft and curvy and soft...

Men are more..s.traight and it's very difficult..

Gamma and that girl being related would be too obvious; they do look sort of alike after all.

Well yeah, but Surma and Antimony look basically identical. so strong familial features wouldn't be too off base. I guess that is a moot point already, since Tom himself has denied relation.

that girl looks bit like Paz. Though I doubt it's related to her either. In all honesty I doubt she's related to any of the characters we know at the moment, that would be far too coincidental.

The picture is a mystery that will probably be explained about ten years from now, but will keep us reading the strip for years.

PS-Reynardine is a god.

if i had to make a guess I'd go with Gunnerkrigg being the older version as opposed to gunner's crag. more than likely they both refer to the crag, with "Gunnerkrigg" being the court at Gunnerkrigg and gunners crag being a deterioration of the language over time. I'd view it much like a monastery, they held on to the languages and such where as the people outside, assuming there are people outside of the court somewhere changed with the new developments in the world around them. Thats my comment about a subject this thread really wasn't meant to discuss. My apologies for getting off track, it just kinda stuck out at me..

I actually think that the woman looks more like Annie than Gamma. Maybe it's the eyelids. Maybe she's an aunt or something? Pah, I dunno. Maybe she is just random classmate/friend. Not everything has to have significance, you know.

Everything is significant (starts to poke owl with a pencil).
But I don't think she is related to anybody we currently know.

I think that in this case we can safely say that everything is significant. Before this chapter,Gamma & Zimmy (why do we always list them in that order?) didn't seem overly important, we'd only seen them once and gotten a vague hint about seeing them again.

I was going to say she could be Anthony's sister, judging by her appearance in relation to Anthony and Antimony, and also by her positioning in the picture.

So yes... an aunt. Good theory.

Well Kat's parents are paired, and Eglamore and Surma are paired (and i think they were a couple before Antimony's parents were, i forget at the moment if this is stated outright, or just strongly implied). So the parallel thing would be for #6 to be Anthony's previous girlfriend.
