It's only appropriate that the chainsawbot should be called 'Ash' from now on. Good, bad... It's just its programming.

Well, that answers that question: it's being called back to the forest. It's not attacking the court, just passing through!

DON'T BE A HERO It's only appropriate that the chainsawbot should be called 'Ash' from now on. Were it Ash, it would try to dispel the dog by reciting "Klaatu Verada Nik*ahemahemgrum*" and subsequently cause it to take root and grow into a giant redwood monster that will decimate a square mile.

Forget boxing gloves, those things have got flippin' Chainswords! Awesome bots. And we don't have to feel sorry for the Bonsaiwolf if it gets chopped up, because it can't feel anything. It's a puppet! Also it's going back to the forest, so it definitely wasn't grown in GKC. That means either Coyote or Ysengrin is controlling it. My bet's on Ysengrin.

The leg is Jones, obviously. Just because a character keeps a straight face all the time, it doesn't mean they're wooden.

Surma the medium can correctly intuit the thing's intent.
Anja the magician can correctly discern the thing's nature.
Donald the tech-head can absorb this information and figure out how he can best understand its purpose.

The comic hasn't shown up in my RSS feed yet! I'm lucky I remembered that it's, you know, Wednesday.
Anyway, I bet it's Coyote (if Ysengrin doesn't have his power yet).
And, what-are-those-leaves-they-are-ominous-ohmygoodness-what-is-going-to-happen?

What i want to know is, if it's passing through the Court on its way back to Gillitie, where is it coming from? I can think of 3 possible explanations: 1. On reconnaissance/mission to the Court 2. Captured from the Forest and now escaping 3. Created in the Court from Forest 'material' and trying to get out That's all I can think of anyway, and they've all been covered before, really.

Unless it's Gillitie in the distance, it looks like the railing in front of them is turning into foliage too. Maybe the leaves are some sort of perception shift on Surma's part?

Going all the way back to Chapter 1...
What were the circumstances surrounding Shadow 2's being at the Court and wanting to escape?
(This is a rhetorical question because we don't know the answer yet.)
Could it be that the Court has had a long history of capturing the creatures of the forest? I mean, why do they have a "Large Animal Holding" in the first place, hm?
The Court was founded on the idea that Man wants to understand and control the etheric nature of the Forest. We've also found out that all of the wonders of the Court's technology (e.g. the robots) only work because of the small amount of etheric presence in them...
This makes the Court look pretty sinister IMO.

We know there’s Gillitie in the distance (panel four of www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=553) but the leaves are in the foreground. There must be something/someone shedding leaves, and didn’t the robots suggest there was (absolutely no involvement of) a large monster or two? Seems like Surma has just discovered wood dog’s pal.

We know that (a) ONE robot has an apparently-etheric component (we haven't seen inside any others in similar detail), (b) Kat, who seems accustomed to tinkering with robots, thinks this is UNUSUAL, (c) The robots basically maintain themselves/each other (d) The Court wants to catch and study a Tic-Toc Bird, but doesn't seem to have a similar interest in the other robots. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how you get from there to robots-in-general having an etheric component.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how you get from there to robots-in-general having an etheric component. Also we have seen that while the robots in the basement do appear superficially similar to some Court robots, Anja could not make heads or tails of their inner workings. And neither could Kat. These robots are actually quite different from the Court robots which are invariably of the ordinary electromechanical variety.

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see how you get from there to robots-in-general having an etheric component. Well, here are my thoughts on that. You'll remember that Kat was analyzing the bots in the basement, saying how none of them had actuators that she could figure out how they worked. To her, they were all just basically mannequins because for all she knew they wouldn't be able to operate, by any science she was aware of. Additionally, she isn't accustomed to tinkering with robots... in fact the reason Anja lent her the key to the warehouse was because Kat wanted to build a robot... for the first time. All of the robots in the court are Diego's robots, just "maintained" over time by themselves. This adds up to the fact that all of the court's robots are made with etheric technology. Kat's statement about their actuators doesn't leave any other possibility. Even Robot, whom Annie put together, was just a matter of plugging in already-built parts. He is in fact one of Diego's Seraph models (Seraph 13 to be exact.)
