Okay, so they both were in ChesterI really like Anja's line in the 5th pannel. I feel sorry for them, though it seems Surma wouldn't want any pity. Oh, and Surma calls her Anny! Spring Break is great because I can stay up until 3AM and make Gunnerkrigg threads.

Is it just me, or does Surma look older in the fourth panel?

Is it just me, or does Surma look older in the fourth panel? She does a bit. I remember people saying Annie looked older when she was angry, so maybe it's the same with Surma.

I can't see it. She looks just like that in the second panel I think...?
Though I do like how Surma looks in the last panel, the hint of frustration with the slight childishness Anja has towards her budding relationship with Donny. I don't think I see Annie like that about Kat's thing with Bird Boys...

I forget that Donald wasn't able to use magic until they made that computer or whatever. This explains panel 2 of the previous comic then.
Also, Surma is bein' all badass and whatnot.

I don't think I quite understand the meaning of this last two or three pages. Is Surma unwilling to use her "Magic" because she's afraid that it will lead Donny to not like her or is there something else going on?

That's what Anja's afraid of, not Surma, yeah.

I don't think I see Annie like that about Kat's thing with Bird Boys... Oh, I could easily see Surma shoving Anja into a room alone with Donald and closing the door... any time now. Except she'll pick a room with no windows for anyone to escape through.

Poor Tom seems to feel the same way about the "Anny" confusion as he did about the Chapter Eighteen flashback confusion, judging from his latest remark in the twitter section of the comic's main page.
I think it shows, once again, that you have to stay alert when you're reading "Gunnerkrigg Court" - and read it as a serialized graphic novel rather than as a collection of stand-alone (if connected by sharing the same characters and setting) punchline strips.

I dunno. I don't usually have a hard time remembering little details like this from earlier chapters, so this confusion seems kind of weird.
That said, I wasn't reading the strip correctly my first time through so I have to admit that I got a teensy bit mixed up as well. It's not really Tom's fault, and once you remember that earlier strip everything clears up pretty quickly. (it took a few seconds to click for me though.)

I've noticed that lots of characters in Gunnerkrigg Court have nick-names. Think about it:
Antimony: Annie Katerina: Kat Donald: Donny/Don James: Jimmy/Jim Anja: Anny Alistair: Aly Anthony: Tony
And maybe one of two others I'm missing. Jones must have another name of some sorts, maybe Josephina? And I think it's really funny that Surma would call Anja Anny.
Modified to add more names.

Just wanted to pop in and say that panel 6 Surma has a very Antimony-ish expression on. It's like Surma's Antimony's mother or something!
Meanwhile, is there something wrong with studying in Chester? Why'd they want to switch out?

Don't forget Andrew Smith, or Smitty, or William Winsbury, Willy.

Wait wait wait.
In that old comic, Surma is calling Anja ''Anny'', while in this one, it's the contrary, Anja is calling Surma ''Anny''. Now I'm re-reading the commentaries on this page to try and figure out what exactly is going on, but I'm still confused. The only answer I've gotten is that both Surma and Anja call each other Anny as a mutual nickname.

It is Surma talking, but she's 'offscreen'. The speech bubble doesn't have a tail leading to Anja, as happens wherever anyone 'onscreen' is talking, so I'm unsure where the confusion has come from. Surma calls Anja 'Anny', end of story. 'Anny' as short for 'Surma' doesn't even work

Although, I must admit that when I first read the comic, I missed the fact that one of them called the other "Anny" and just assumed that it was Anja talking.

That's probably why she's poking her own eye in panel-4. To sparkle it up and all.

What's weird is that this is exactly the opposite of the confusion everyone had with page 311. In the original version of that page, Annie's "Ha ha!" in the final panel had a tail pointing off-panel... and everyone interpreted it as coming from someone behind the door. So Tom chopped off the tail and moved the bubble so it covered up the door more, and that cleared it up.

Changed now It's going to really confuse future readers who don't know the backstory, but I love it anyway. "So says me, Surma, who is speaking right now with you, my friend Anja!" I think we may have annoyed Tom a little this time :S

I remember people saying Annie looked older when she was angry, so maybe it's the same with Surma. Stibnite Bloodline Technique: "Fear Thy Elders" - Player gains +5 years to Age stat while Enraged. - Lasts no more than 4 turns. - Roll 2d6 to determine effectivness. - Ineffective against: Teachers, Parents, Etheric Beings

Changed now W-why is the mirror speaking? I misread at first, too. Looking at 311 I think I'd be more likely to think the voice was coming from behind the door without the tail than with it, regardless of the amount of door-cover-uppage.

I reread it to see who it was who called who Anny (if that last sentence made ANY sense whatsoever) and noticed the extra bubble. I actually started laughing out loud.

Is there anyone who managed to save the version with the extra bubble that would care to post it here for us that missed it?

For some reason, Anja's eyes make me wonder, "How does she see?"
And it looks like the myth that the Ladies Room is very lavish is untrue. At least in Gunnerkrigg Court.
