Love Surma in the thrid. And she reminds me of a witch in the first one. Also, it was totally worth staying up until 3AM to make this.

It took me a couple read-throughs before I could parse what Anja was saying in the last panel. But I'm still not sure what Donny's "Dang"-ing. Perhaps because Eglamore caused trouble, and inspired Surma to be further convinced that showy violence is the answer?
Ben
EDIT: Or, of course, perhaps it's the fact that without Jimmy, Donald is now by himself. That's pretty "Dang"-worthy.

Maybe he ruined his plans to get close to Anja that day?
I wonder what Anja zapping someone would look like.

Ah, the 542nd comic. There's been quite a few of 'em now. So Surma and Anja know magic. Interesting. And apparently, Anja doesn't want Donald to know they can do magic. Interestinger.
From comic 513:
Also, Anja's bitterness about the Court's intolerance of magic apparently has quite a history to it.

Maybe someone else has already commented on this, but I noticed just now that in this chapter, the Court seems to be in a much better state. Things must have turned bad in the past 20 years or so.

Probably from its lack of Surma, did it cause such a thing to happen to the court?

I second preus' statement. Perhaps has something to do with Triangle-beard on the previous page? Perhaps the new headmaster is not quite so stringent, or perhaps the Court then was not as big as it is now and is therefore much easier to maintain.

Only if you disregard the abundance of cracks in the wall near the girls’ bathroom. And since we only see any detail when we are quite close, that doesn’t mean other parts of the building are in better shape.

Panel six is full of win. Mostly because people at home call everyone 'love'. (Home is around 15mins from Barnsley, where Surma is from.)

No matter how well-kept a school is, the girls' bathroom will always be covered in cracks. You could build an entire school right now. The minute you cement the last brick, before you enroll even a single student, the girls' bathroom will be covered in cracks. And the boys' bathroom will have huge puddles of what you hope is water all over the floor.

Let's not forget the graffiti. Ah, thank you for reminding me. Within seconds, four illegible scribbles and five crudely drawn penises will appear seemingly out of nowhere. Some have theorized that there is a Pratchett-esque alternate dimension where graffiti exists in potentia, only being converted into material form when it comes into contact with the trans-dimensional portal that is a school bathroom.

I'm not sure which is more adorable, Anja asking Donald to "excuse please", or Surma calling Anja "Love".
What is it with James, Donald, and Anthony where they only seem to want to hang out with girls who speak improper English?

I love Anja and Donald. So awkward. So cute. What is it with James, Donald, and Anthony where they only seem to want to hang out with girls who speak improper English? That's probably what Surma can't stand about Jones.

That does bring up an interesting point- Does Donald know Anja has superpowers yet?
Although he does look ashamed/bashful second panel, that could just be because he was beside Anja. And they are cute.

And they are cute. Anja's comment about how people don't like it when they use magic loses some credibility if nobody knows they can use magic. And I think Donald can control himself if there's a more pressing matter to be concerned about, ie. James getting in trouble.

I thought it was possible that Donald also has magic—I think I was seeing Anja's "we/our" as being inclusive of the whole group. But that wouldn't really compute with grown-up Anja's statement that Donald can't use blinker stones, huh? So, we could see Anja's use of "we/our" as being inclusive of Brinnie and/or of some yet unseen power of Surma's, however I think it's likely that, from what we know of child-Anja's knowledge of English, she could actually just be talking about herself (she could mean "I/my.") ANYWAY, that was kind of a tangent... I think Donald knows what his friends can do. With someone like Brinnie around, there'd be no reason to hide what the others can do.

What's creaking in panel 1? It looks like either the ceiling (floor above) or Surma's head XD I love how we can see the progression from this back arc where Anja and Donny are all shy and polite to each other, to the present day where e.g. here Anja in particular seems very comfortable being a bit forward. I like how she calls him 'Donald'. Like 'Donny' would be far too informal, hehe.

I wouldn't call it "forward" to act like that with your spouse! EDIT: I do understand your point about the progression and change in their relationship. I just thought "forward" was an amusing choice of words. :-)

I can't figure out for the life of me why the onomatopoeia says "creak". Maybe she's cracking her neck?

I had to look at it a couple of times—it DOES look like Surma's head! If you look closely, though, you'll see that she is using her back to lean on and open a door. I believe that's what's creaking.

Obviously they're going to be more comfortable together, they've had a kid and everything. That's about as comfortable as you can get. I can't wait to see more of the 'Anja and Donny' story. They're such a cute couple A door does make more sense than her head, I suppose... unless Surma's a robot too, just like Jones

Eh, eh, re-reading that comic I just noticed for the first time that A) Donald is keeping the paper upside down and b) Anja is holding the pen in her left hand (and I don't think she is left-handed). So that was what Kat noticed. . It is amazing how any time you re-read this comic you notice something new.

If Anja can already work magic - at a point when she's still a relatively new student at Gunnerkrigg - then that suggests that not all of her magical/etheric abilities are the products of a computer program directed through her pendant. At least, it's unlikely that she would have developed (or have access to) that computer program yet. (Though, as I mentioned during the last chapter, I think that the computer program would have to have some etheric elements to it, in order to be able to, say, block Reynardine's body-hopping powers.)

Anja's comment about how people don't like it when they use magic loses some credibility if nobody knows they can use magic. I get the feeling Anja's had some rough experiences with her magic before, though. See here: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=542, where she blushes when someone calls Brinnie a freakshow? Also, I bet Donald is saying "Dang it," because Jimmy has just gotten hauled off to the office and left Donny alone outside a girl's bathroom. No boy I know appreciates this.
