There are those not worth the trouble -- and those who are.
Surma knows she's supposed to be disgusted with boys being boys, but she can't help being pleased Eglamore stood up for her.

My first thought at seeing the guy who broke up the fight was "Ysengrin." Of course, I'm probably wrong, that's just the impression I got.
Surma seems to be against violence here, so maybe she wouldn’t’ve punched/kicked that kid. I really like the expressions in the last two panels.

Mr. Thorn is a scary giant of a man.
I love the faces in the last three panels. They say so much without any dialogue.
If I hadn't messed about, I'd have had this one. :/

Senior dragon slayer. This is where Eglamore begins his path? And possibly how he loses Surma.

Thorn minus 'n' = Thor?
Edit: speculation invalid after Tom's answer in the Q thread...
But giants DO play a major part in Norse mythology. Absolutely liking this chapter!!

Rather Jones senior, I'd say. Note the suit he wears.
Something tells me that this was not the first time Eglamore and Hyland clashed.

Love the look on Surma's face in the next to last panel.Mr. Thorn looks a tad bit like Iroh from Avatar the last airbender. wombat: I'm not so sure, judging by her look in the next to last panel, maybe she would've slapped him or kneed him in the weak spot in response,or at least make a snappy comeback. She strikes me as the kind of girl who knows how to defend herself (and her friends.)

Mr. Thorn looks a tad bit like Iroh from Avatar the last airbender. You mean season-3-pre-breakout-all-buffed-up Iroh? Then yeah. Mr. Thorn seems like an awesome teacher.

Hmm, Mr. Thorn's got some funny hatching going on with his sleeve in the last panel. But that's just my inner critic coming out. I do like that blocky lavender fill going on with the crowd of kids. Speaking of - I love that single girl in the background who's actually not horrified, and has her hands up all like, "HIT 'IM IN THA MOUTH!" cracked me up. And that BEARD.

I want that beard. *carefully waters the beginnings of his facial hair*
Love this page. Really do. Too distracted by awesome music right now to say anything more sensible.

Alas, my own beard is only a pale imitation of Mr. Thorn's. This page has shown me that I can never truly inspire people with my facial hair. I... I don't know if I can go on anymore.

I was like, "Woah, Alan Moore?!" but then I realised that Moore's is way more untamed. And when I got to reading the dialogue I was like, "Woah, Blackbriar Thorn?!" but his beard is a sad, unimpressive thing.

Mr. Thorn sure doesn't like Hyland. Course, from what we've seen of the guy he's a real jerk, and I couldn't care less about him, but I'm surprised that a teacher (if that's what Mr. Thorn is) would be so condescending to a student.

That beard looks almost like a darkened zebra skin, suspended from Mr. Thorn's cheeks - a single surface of intimidation and manly hygiene. Assuming Mr. Thorn is indeed a dragon slayer, we can see where Eglamore learned to be built like a lighthouse. One final observation - Thorn's wearing the formal attire that the Court faculty wore during chapter 14. Official fashion hasn't chaged much?

Mr. Thorn's beard... It is beautiful.
Surma/James chemistry... It is wonderful, it gives me goosebumps.
Thanks, Tom, for making characters that are so tantalizingly real.

Yeah, that beard is amazing. Mr. Thorn seems like the kind of teacher every schoolboy looks up to as a real man. Know what crazy idea popped into my head after I woke up this morning? I thought a handsome young man would break up the fight and James would call him "Mr. Renard".

I am reminded of the immense, gargantuan green knight from "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (in which there is also a major nature vs.technology/civilization theme going on)

Well it is a pretty epic bread. I didn't get the impression that he particuarly didn't like Hyland. The kid just got in a fight, and isn't in trouble, just told to leave.

Dawww, I got told off by Tom for asking if he's a Dragon Slayer. Until future strips disprove me, I'll operate on the assumption that he is one. He is, after all, hella big.

Dawww, I got told off by Tom for asking if he's a Dragon Slayer. I would say it's more because of too many questions too close to near-future comics. He'll (this is speculation on my part) answer stuff that is *supplemental* to the comic - that is, not actually in the comic, but close enough to it to be relevant and interesting. On that basis, I don't expect to see Brinnie on a battlefield collecting the souls of the heroic dead in the next month or so. Which is about the only think I can think of that would simply scream "Valkyrie!"

Hm. Thorn? Bah. Say what you say, I'm calling him "Big McLargehuge".

That would make him a relative of Dr. McLarge Huge in 'Empowered 4' then? Mind you I don't think the good Doctor can be hiding such a magnificent beard under his surgical mask.

Surma Stibnite? More like Surma Sassypants, am I right?
