542I think Hyland can be glad it was Eggers who punched him first, because a second later he would've got it from Annie Surma, and that would've been far more humiliating. ;p

Was he about to say what I THINK he was about to say?! Foul mouthed blaggard deserved that facial assault.
Eggers always was the noble champion, it seems.

I thought this was an April Fools gag until I realized that Hyland is probably not Tony.

Actually, my first thought was the future headmaster. But I suspect the headmaster is probably too old to be this kid, even if he does have a daughter Annie's age, unless his job has aged him beyond his years. ETA: I think it's the eyebrows that put that thought into my head. They remind me of Janet.

Hyland would be roughly in the same age bracket as the primary adult cast, so he is probably not the headmaster who appears much older than Eglamore, Donald and Anja.

So apparently Chester has had a reputation for quite awhile. Kind of interesting how Surma takes this as a grave insult.
Also: Hyland says that Surma and her friends, plural, are freaks. Apart from Anthony, what have the others done to deserve such scorn at this point?

Ah, the 540th Gunnerkrigg Court strip is the best I've seen in a while. The previous generation's Winsbury is introduced, and summarily punched. Although I must say that this Hyland is more hateable than Winsbury ever was. Going around calling Surma a cu-. Now that's not something I'd expect in GC.

Also: Hyland says that Surma and her friends, plural, are freaks. Apart from Anthony, what have the others done to deserve such scorn at this point? Well, it's been said before that technology and magic don't really mix, and that the Court tends to look down on magic. (Emphasized in the chapter "The Medium Beginning".) We know that Brinnie tends to use magic in front of everyone (Eglamore even said jokingly that she was a show-off), Surma eventually ended up as a medium, Eglamore grew up to be a dragon-hunter, and Donald and Anja developed an etheric computer program. Sure, all of that stuff probably happened a long time after this took place, but even as kids it was probably obvious that they were more closely involved with magic than their classmates. So the Court's discrimination against anything magical might have had something to do with Hyland's comment. If that's the case, then it seems to me like the comment wasn't aimed at Anthony, since according to Jones he shares the belief that magic is inferior to science, and doesn't want to have anything to do with it. She said it on this page. www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=369

I love Surma's and James' reaction in this. I like people who stick up for their friends. Also, Anja looks adorable in the second panel.

Tom said that the final clue to Brinnie's identity was to be on today's page: I wonder what that was. My guess is the aftermath of her portal in the first panel, which looks like some flickers of blue fire (evoking the ring of fire that circled Brynhild in the Norse legends and Wagner's Ring Cycle).
Eglamore's punching out Hyland reminded me of the scene at the start of Chapter Three where Annie flips Winsbury after he's picking on Kat. Small wonder that Eglamore showed some sneaking approval of her action (while officially rebuking her); he probably remembers those acts of his as a boy.

At the base of the blue flame, there's three interlocking triangles. As someone pointed out in the thread for the previous page, this is the Valknut, which is a symbol of Odin.

Tom affirmed that on the question thread today (Tom revealing information=shocking!): Odin. She is the valkyrie Brynhildr, sent to Earth for going against his wishes.

My first thought was that he looked just like Liam Gallagher (for example, img2.timeinc.net/people/i/2008/news/080225/liam_gallagher.jpg). It is hard to conceive of Hyland turning into the civil and laid-back old gentleman we have seen in chapter 14.

Kind of interesting how Surma takes this as a grave insult. She understands it was meant as an insult. Some people will be proud to be regarded as “freaks”, just not by everyone. Also: Hyland says that Surma and her friends, plural, are freaks. Apart from Anthony, what have the others done to deserve such scorn at this point? Donald is a nerd, Anja is a foreigner prone to making grammatical errors (and also kind of a nerd). Surma, whether she is already training to be a medium or not, is most likely experiencing “strange things happening around her” (to quote the headmaster), and she’s a redhead with a pirate’s accent, which for a square such as Hyland might be enough to qualify for a freak. James might just be envied for his good looks and (I suppose) popularity with the girls. It is the kind of insult that tells you more about the one making it than about the insulted.

He was obviously about to call Surma a "custard-head", which is about the worst thing you can call a girl.
So I guess Hyland is the Winsbury of his generation? Considering the low-tolerance for insults Surma and her friends seem to have, he would be wise to watch his step.

So I guess Hyland is the Winsbury of his generation? I think that comparison is a bit unfair towards Winsbury. He may be an annoying jerk, but (to our knowledge) he's never been that hurtfully insulting. He actually seems to get along with Annie, at least to some degree. In the end of chapter 10 he's cheering for her, after all.

Hyland sure looks a lot like Sullivan't John, too - and they share the same sentiments about Chester. Interesting.
Interesting that such a character would be dropping such terrible words in a crowd of dozens of people. I wonder how they'll react - and for some reason I'm almost sure they won't side with the Eggers.

Way to go James, take the blunt way to do it. Brinnie teleports awesomely all over the place, Anthony sneaks away all the time, Anja and Donald are cute, Surma gets pissed, but Eglamore just punches the guy in the snout to establish superiority. Way to go, James.
Azeltir, I'm pretty sure it's by general consensus that they're an odd friends group, so although people may not out of the blue insult them like that, I agree, they probably wouldn't side with James.
I do hope our protagonists visit Chester sometime in the future.
