Interesting how Anthony seems disconnected from the group, standing apart and looking away from everyone else, and then trailing way behind in the back when the group is walking away.
Also, that girl is clearly not Jones. I mean, it looks like she might even be giggling. Even those who don't believe Tom's own insistence that she's not Jones should be convinced by this.

That won't stop people from speculating anyway. It's what this forum is built on, for better or worse.

Hey, we're actually seeing Anthony and mystery girl in the narrative! With, like dialogue and stuff (next page?). Maybe we'll even find out her name!
I am excited.

In panel four, while the group's walking away, James is standing right behind Surma, Don behind Anja, but Anthony and That Girl don't look close.

I predict that Beardguy and his Chekhov's beard is Jack's father.

The photographer is portrayed with unusual realism. I have a superstition that this means the character is based on a real person in the life of the cartoonist. What brand is his camera? I want it to be " Foglio", but I can't really make that come out right.

YAY!
We ARE starting right off. Time for a betting pool on whether or not we'll find out who the girl is this chapter!
I'm going to guess we're getting a name, but only a first name.

not Jones but perhaps the template upon which the Jones android was built?

not Jones but perhaps the template upon which the Jones android was built? Assuming she really is a robot. So far, that's just a guess by Annie.

I't's pretty obvious now where Annie gets her emotionless side from.
Also, there's something I've noticed that might just be me. When Annie is showing emotion, she somehow seems older and more mature that when she looks emotionless. And the same seems to be true of her parents - Surma (the redhead, for those who are uninitiated) looks like she's the oldest and most mature, despite likely being in the same year as her friends (as Tom said, Gunnerkrigg students tend to make friends with those in the same year and house), and Anthony (in the upper-right, again for the uninitiated), to me at least, looks to be slightly younger than the others.
My theory, if this all isn't just due to my point of view: Surma is a fountain of emotion, while Anthony is quite the opposite, and Annie has elements of both. Surma and Annie's emotions make them appear to be slightly older, more mature, and all-around more human, while Anthony and Annie's emotionlessness makes them seem slightly younger, a bit less mature, and a little less human.

under "what good is speculating alone in your room?"
some pointless observations:
1. the girl has the same makeup as surma 2. her eyes look like anthony's, and she has similar hair. 3. does dragon slaying turn your hair black? 4. at first I thought anthony just wandered off, but it seems like he's following along behind the group
That's all I've got. It was a really nice page.

What I find odd is how all of them (except Anthony, which isn't surprising considering how devoid of emotion he is) are smiling in this page, but only about half of them are smiling in the photo. Looking forward to this chapter.

3. does dragon slaying turn your hair black? When hair's cut short it goes darker at the roots, as it's usually light that, um, lightens it. So my friend would be very blonde if her hair was longer, as would be her brother and mother, both of whom have very short hair. I just love the dynamics (or lack thereof with Anthony) of the post photo scene. And the opening panel, ingenious!

Wow, this really is going to be a complete flashback chapter! It's kinda weird seeing the people in the photo as characters and not just still portraits. And now where finally going to get a glimpse of what Anthony was like. Or what he is like at all.

Grumpy dude, eh. Now, how did he get pulled into the photo? One of the girls? James and Don don't seem to be attending to him.

I find it funny how one of the questions on meccanica's joke image in the title page discussion thread is answered in panel 2.
And regardless, this is a brilliant way to start the chapter.
With respect to Anthony, Yin, I kind of expect that he'd actually want to be in the picture himself. Just because he's not very friendly doesn't mean that he wouldn't want to participate in the formalities of his friendship.

Assuming she really is a robot. So far, that's just a guess by Annie. I have always assumed that to be a tongue-in-cheek remark anyway. There was some speculation about Jones being much older than her looks suggest, and I tend to agree. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if we should see Jones in the upcoming flashback scenes, as a teacher and looking just as she does now. But that wouldn’t imply she was an android.

It sometimes turns darker as one grows older, too—I saw in pictures that my dad had white-blond hair when he was a toddler, and these days it's nearly black. I'll just go ahead and voice my excitement over this chapter as well. ;D

Assuming she really is a robot. So far, that's just a guess by Annie. along these lines... Can someone point me to where it says that Anthony is in the picture at all? The only place I found it it was a guess by Kat, yet everyone else seems so sure that it's him.

The photographer is portrayed with unusual realism. I have a superstition that this means the character is based on a real person in the life of the cartoonist. If you reread the comic you will notice that the new characters tend to look better due to the art getting better, while the old characters evolve slowly because Tom can't just redesign them from scratch without having a certain discontinuity in their look. The later a character is introduced, the better it looks.

I love flashback chapters!
I think Anthony just dyed his hair black so he'd look cooler. Maybe he went through a goth-punk stage before turning to... Dragon slaying? >.>

So why is it that everyone seems to think black-haired-boy behind Surma is Carver and brown-haired-boy behind mystery-girl is Egs? It's strongly implied, iirc, if not outright stated, that Surma was dating Eglamore 'in those days', and ended up with Carver later, and that's the only reason I can see for anyone assuming that, as I don't think anyone said 'that guy behind (my/Annie's/your) mum is (your/Annie's/my dad/Anthony Carver)' or anything to that effect, and there's the obvious connection that Anja and Donald are together in the photo, so that's the only thing I can think of that would make anyone assume black-hair is Carver...

No, everyone thinks that the boy behind Surma is James and the boy behind TGFTP is Anthony. It was confirmed in this page.Anybody notice the inconsistency in their uniforms? James and Anthony are wearing shirt and tie, no jacket, Donald is wearing shirt and tie with a sweater vest, Anja has a shrit and a jacket, Surma is wearing a shirt and a sweater vest, and TGFTP is wearing a sweater (much like the ones Annie and Kat were wearing their first year).

The photographer is portrayed with unusual realism. I have a superstition that this means the character is based on a real person in the life of the cartoonist. I was wondering about that myself. It could just be that he was designed more recently, when Tom's art skillz have increased, and so he looks more detailed. Also, he looks uncannily similar to PZ Myers Judging by how the whole deal with Surma went (most obvious guess by us and a character was way off) it's probably false. I've been wondering about this for awhile. Maybe they're sisters (or not). Assuming the makeup is significant in some way (which it almost certainly is- remember this?) and the theory of it shielding Annie from magic/ghosts /whatever is true (which is much less certain), maybe mystery girl was a medium as well. Perhaps she died in some kind of training accident- it would explain why none of the other characters have mentioned her (painful memories and/or guilt) and why the Court took so long to start training more.

Nobody seems to have commented on it yet, but the "We do!" line in the last panel is written in a different font - much rougher - than the rest of the page (than the rest of the script in the webcomic, in fact). I don't know whether it's deliberate (reflecting something about the speaker) or an error.
There'll probably be some present-day action in this chapter as well, if for no other reason than to explain how Annie can include it in her account of her time at Gunnerkrigg. (Though there've been some passages in the comic so far - such as the conversation between the Donlans and Eglamore after Annie and Kat leave in Chapter Seven, not to mention a lot of the Bonus Pages - that she couldn't have known about.)
