Man, I won't have internet all next week. So I have to wait until the 23rd to get this resolved. Why, Tom, why?
I'd suggest a theory for this page, only I have no idea where to even begin.

Mort owed some demons some money, they are here to collect. Darn Loan Sharks.

My guess is Mort is having a nightmare.
Possibly he thinks he's failing in his reason-for-being-there, because of Antimony's rather insulting comment or the momentarily-strained relationship between them. And this thinking-he's-failing is bringing forth his subconscious image of what happens to ghosts who fail.
However, I reserve the privilege of being completely wrong.
At the same time - the fact that this update focuses on Mort, makes it even more likely that he's the to-be-recipient of Annie's note.

Mort is practising being scary to cheer himself up, obviously.

Another ghost in town?
Zimmy dropping by to screw with Mort?
A new psychopomp who's about to say, "wait, wait, wrong appointment." (clears throat) "WE ARE HERE TO GIVE YOU A LETTERRRRRRRR!"?
note: all these ideas are wrong.

Mort has been watching too much Inuyasha.
===
I also like the idea that this is some of Mort's ghost buddies coming by to scare him.

Mort is practising being scary to cheer himself up, obviously. Well that makes sense now I think about it. Of course that's simultaneously hilarious and the most tearjerking concept ever.

Why do we need a theory on this one? They are clearly here to destroy him. It says so right there.
(p.s. They are clearly not there to destroy him.)

I think it's like a ghost high-five. You scare the crap out of each other. New ghost friend maybe?

Three panels of screaming without any signs of actual destruction say, at least, that Mort being destroyed is highly unlikely.
I have a small feeling that it may be Annie/Kat using some magic/science thing to try to cheer him up in that weird "Hey, remember being scary?" way.
Also, the number of comments that seem to take the possibility of destruction seriously is just one more reason for me to stop paying attention to speculation, wild or otherwise.

Muut: You know we are not allowed to interfere in the living realm.
Annie: No need to worry about that. This letter is for Mort. And could you guys give him a good scare before you deliver it to him?

I'm thinking it's Mort working on new scary stuff, and this one is good enough that he's managed to scare himself. I mean, c'mon - it's Mort.

...the heck?
Yeah, the fact that Mort, whose job it is to scare people, is terrified at the sight of these demons seems a bit too coincidental. Him scaring himself, though, just doesn't seem that right.

I think its Muut. He knew mort well enough to make him give the stone to annie, so I think its a practical joke.
My other idea is that they are obviously there to destroy him and Annie & Kat will save him. At the same time, mending a friendship and saving a life.

I love this page. It made me laugh, was a complete surprise, and provoked some hysterical speculation here My favorite theory is inhumandecency's last one

Also, the number of comments that seem to take the possibility of destruction seriously is just one more reason for me to stop paying attention to speculation, wild or otherwise. I was just looking at the comments, and it looks like no more than 1 in 20 to me. I am assuming that statements beginning with "oh noes!" usually should not be taken seriously. Mort is practising being scary to cheer himself up, obviously. I like this idea, but it seemed like there was something wrong with it... I just realized that in the past, Mort has always transformed himself into part of the scene. I assumed that was necessary, but maybe it's not?

I have a small feeling that it may be Annie/Kat using some magic/science thing to try to cheer him up in that weird "Hey, remember being scary?" way. Agreeing with that, being that this chapter seems to be exceeding the average length, has revealed yet another plot puzzle piece, and is due for a funny conclusion. I think this is Muut doing Annie a favor, after which he will deliver a message from Annie that she's sorry for judging him so harshly. After all, Muut can only punk the undead. If some think this Muut-o-gram is an unusual way of saying your sorry, remember: Annie is weird.

If some think this Muut-o-gram is an unusual way of saying your sorry, remember: Annie is weird. She's also rather solemn to be including this sort of stunt in an apology. I seriously doubt that it came from her. Muut, possibly. But most likely, I think, it came from Mort, and all the demon-things will go pop when Muut wakes him up.

That was a bit of a change of pace.
When the page started loading, I thought they were Mort's ghost-buddies there to distract him from his lovesickness, but he'd just go on leaning on the desk and saying, "Thanks guys, but not now" or something.
Now I know they are there to destroy hiiiim.
