Man. When was the last time we saw Angry Annie? *looks at avatar* Oh, right.
Poor Mort. I give even odds he didn't even know about the "couples" thing, or didn't pay any attention to it, and now he's about to catch Guilt Hammer Hell for it.
Now that I think about, that's probably the most indignant thing Annie has ever said in comic, and certainly to someone (presumably) her own age.
EDIT: Someone should take Mort and his house of cards as an avvy.

Fifth panel is weeird. Mort's "hey gals" eyebrows, Kat's look. Nice, though. And yeah, Annie - what's up? It's not as if he tried to offend her, so I suspect there's something slightly deeper here.

I am forseeing a case of Annie's social skills bringing Mort's house down.
And yes, the cards are to blame for my choice of words.

I don't think Annie should be too harsh on the little guy. The Blinker Stone had been a big help to her in the forest, and Mort might well have had that in mind without being aware of its more romantic associations.

Annie knows that Mort has a crush on her, Kat explicitly mentioned it before summer holidays. What is new is that you can spy on people via blinker stones.

I'm willing to give the thought that Annie is pulling Mort's leg a bit of credibility too, though, but then again... she is as much an eccentric a person can be.

Wow Annie, if that's directed at Mort... what crawled up your butt?
Now I'm all antsy over why she's so upset. Had problems with romantic gifts before? Probably not, she lived in a hospital with dying people. Either way she should probably accept it with grace and just let him down gently.
Where's Rey in all this?

Annie: You think it's funny that this is a couple thing? Now I have to marry a GHOST! I wasn't even planning on getting married! Boys distract me from mysteries and psychopomps! Why have you cursed me like this? WHYYYYY! I can't even have BABIES with a ghost!
I don't see why she wouldn't be mad.
Or maybe it's the spying thing.

I had a feeling Annie was going to react like this. I wonder if she's going to give the stone back. Poor Mort

Yeah, come on, Annie. Crush the guy's soul. it is not like he have anything left after all. Seriously, for the first time ever she is coming really near to me disliking her, even if she have exceptions to the romantic implications of the blinker stone's gift there are more kind ways to put him down like "it is not you, it is me, I'm still alive. But if you can wait in 50-60 years, maybe...".

I don't understand a reason for assuming the gift was a trick/joke on her rather than a misunderstanding that the gift could also have romantic meanings. Whatever the reason Mort had for giving the stone, it was still meant in a positive manner and has been nothing but beneficial. I will be disappointed if she is actually angry.

Well there goes my hopes of seeing my blinker stone tricks. Still, seeing Mort is good. Go easy on him Annie!

Wow, I must say, I wasn't expecting those words. I figured she'd have a nice heart-to-heart talk with Mort about what he thought about her, resulting eventually in Annie clarifying that they were only friends.
I didn't think she'd be insulted by it. She'd better have a legitimate reason for being angry.

Hm... Was the blinker stone really from Mort?
I only recall it being claimed as she got the stone, never proven.

If you gave a girl a web cam and she subsequently found out you *could* have been using it to spy on her, I'm pretty certain she'd be fairly pissed off with you, regardless of the innocense (or otherwise) of your actions. I don't see that Annie would react any differently just because it's the magical equivalent.

I could see this going two ways: 1) she thinks (or knows) Mort could have been spying on here or 2) there's something else that the reader hasn't found out about yet.

I don't get a lot of people's attitudes to this page. Like I said, I was expecting this since the previous page and I think Annie's reaction makes perfect sense for her character.
I think she's annoyed because she's assuming Mort knew about the implications of giving a Blinker stone, and didn't tell her. It's as if he's designated her as his girlfriend without her consent (remember that Anja said they're given between couples, not just someone who has a one-sided crush). I can understand why someone with Annie's sort of personality wouldn't take kindly to this.
(BTW, if this develops into an argument and Kat sides with Mort, things could get really interesting......)
EDIT: Actually, another possibility is that Annie thinks Mort's crush on her is a joke, and this is taking it too far. If so, her self-esteem is probably not as strong as it appears.

EDIT: Someone should take Mort and his house of cards as an avvy. Thank ye kindly for the suggestion. I've wanted a new one. I was not expecting Annie's reaction. Whether it's the couples-connotation or the idea of spying, I'm surprised at Annie for jumping to conclusions...and I don't think Mort was doing anything to warrant such a response. Interesting...

Oh no... looks like it's back to the drawing board for the newb. I'm gonna go with penguinfactory on this one and say it's Annie being bothered by receiving a gift meant for "couples" from someone she doesn't really like that way. This also sheds some light on why he was so glad she liked it when he first gave it to her.

Thing is... Muut actually literally gave Annie the blinkerstone, with the words "he wanted us to give you this." Referring to Mort. Now that *could* have been "Hey Muut, I want to give this gift to Annie, could you deliver it for me?" Or it *could* have been "Hey Muut, I think Annie really needs a blinkerstone right now, but it would be inappropriate for me to give her one, it'd be less awkward coming from you, and anyway I don't actually have one to give her..." (Not that it actually would be that much less awkward coming from Muut, but Mort is not omniscient.)

I hope Annie doesn't do what most characters do when they say that line. Because that would be so unlike Annie. And someone mentioned in the comments that Annie's behaviour doesn't seem like the kind one should have if their working to be a mediator of sorts. Hopefully, she just doing this to pull Mort's "leg".

Btw, the argument of Annie being pissed because Mort may have been able to use it spy on her... There has been no indication that anyone other than the Blinker Stone's owner can use it for that purpose. Annie, presumably, could not use Anja's Blinker Stone to spy on anyone. Only her own. So Mort would not be able to use Annie's. At least that's my take on it.
Rather, I think Annie is probably upset because of the romantic implications. Or maybe something hidden that we will find out about later. Tom always has a card up his sleeve... >.>

Mort may have been unaware of the Blinker Stone's cultural significance at Gunnerkrigg as Annie was (until a short time ago). Annie might want to consider that.

I just had abrainwave. This whole situation reminds me of the time Kat got angry at Annie for not having enough fun during the Dr. Disaster arc. Perhaps, Annie isn't upset with Mort but with Kat instead! Only this time around, Annie's getting mad at Kat for not taking this thing seriously enough! Perhaps Kat is about to be introduced to an Annie she never knew existed.
I'm not too worried about their friendship, though. For me, the end will be when Annie accuses Kat of not having enough fun and Kat accuses Annie of not taking things seriously. Or when Jones' cracks a smile, because some things were not meant for mortal eyes!

Whatever the reason Mort had for giving the stone, it was still meant in a positive manner and has been nothing but beneficial. What if the blinker stone hasn't been completely harmless to Annie? Maybe using the blinker stone to make the fire is what allowed Jeanne to cross the Annan and cut Annie. If so, then Mort put her in potentially a lot of danger--Jeanne seemed about to charge when Kat showed up! Back at 136 Muut says clearly that Jeanne can't cross the Annan Waters. Then Annie's makes fire by "imagining" it. Sounds a lot like the psychic spying stuff she can now use the blinker stone to do! By 141, she's maintaining the imagined fire, and has dark circles under her eyes--this usually happens when she crosses over to the weird alter (psychic?) world for a while (re: Science Tower episode with Zimmy). Tom even implies that Annie's tiredness has something to do with concentrating on the fire. The dark under-eye shadows are still there when Jeanne appears and threatens Annie. Annie is likely in the psychic world this whole time. When Kat shows up the cut is suddenly gone, marking Annie's departure from the weird spirit/alter world where Jeanne can indeed cross the Annan. (Though the dark circles persist. They seem to do that.) Okay now watch Tom shoot this theory to pieces in the next update. Or other forum members, for that matter. :)

Perhaps, Annie isn't upset with Mort but with Kat instead! This has been the notion I've been entertaining. Mort's done nothing wrong here, but Kat's been quite immature about all this, especially given her experience with romance. How do you think she'd have been if Annie had acted like this about Aly?
