523Kinda hard to read Annie's expression in the 4th panel. Kat's expression on the other hand is like an open book. ;D

Of course, this begs the question: Where did Donald get a blinkerstone in the first place?

I'm intrigued by the source of the stones as well. I figured when Mort gives his to Annie, he just sort of.....conjured it out of thin air. Never really thought about it much after that. It made fire. And fireworks. And shields. And it teleports. Huh. Maybe it is a bit more important than I gave it credit for.

It could very well be that blinker stones are mined just like most minerals. Or maybe its grown...
Given a saturated solution of "blinker" that is soluble in a proper "etheric medium"......

For gemstones in general, if you can mine it, you can make it. Given that blinkerstones are pretty homogeneous, though, I suspect they're all mined. I doubt people at the court could resist tinkering with the formula otherwise.

Tom said that they are of a similar rarity to our world's gemstones. I think that he probably meant some of the more exclusive ones though, as most gemstones are quite common.

I wonder how long it'll be before Annie finally has to make it clear that she likes Mort, yes, but not in that way. (And let's hope that when she says it, Mort isn't within hearing range without her knowing it).)
For that matter, let's hope that Reynardine doesn't overhear this part of the conversation and get jealous (assuming that he takes that kind of interest in Annie).

Wow, Kat is really starting to look like her mother. All she has to do is grow out her hair more.
And is one of the few times when Tom does the background figures with more detail than his usual expressive smiley faces?

If it is mined, though, that might mean it takes someone of great compassion to activate it. It's like a love letter: it starts off as a blank but once someone puts words to it, it gives it more weight.

That Mortimer sure is sly. Sending a valuable asset to Annie when she was in trouble and a token of his feelings at the same time!

I think that means that if you have one, it was given to you by your beloved, rather than, couples routinely exchange them. Could go either way, though.

I wonder how long it'll be before Annie finally has to make it clear that she likes Mort, yes, but not in that way. (And let's hope that when she says it, Mort isn't within hearing range without her knowing it).) You know I'm not so sure what Annie's feelings towards Mort are- the closest thing to interest in a guy I can recall Annie openly expressing was how she appeared to be enjoying Coyote's company in chapter 20. Which was weird for me, because as funny as he can be I still think he's creepy. Uh, actually, that raises the question- has Annie ever laughed in the comic? Other than in a childhood flashback? Because if anybody is likely to extract a giggle from her, Coyote is. But anyway, that's beside my point. What I'm getting at is that Annie may be too repressed to ever act on or even recognize any interest she has in a male. It may be she and Mort actually have some compatibility (Although only Tom could know how the heck that would work.) but Annie just won't ever admit it because those feelings scare her. Heck, maybe she was having a good time with Coyote because she doesn't think of him that way and can therefore be somewhat more relaxed. And I'm not suggesting Annie will get over this soon- we could be in year six at the court, Kat could be properly dating, and Kat and a few of Annie's other friends will end up having to openly confront Annie about her frigidity. I've heard it repeated thousands of times that young girls base their relationships with boys on their relationship with their father. While we probably know the least about Anthony of any of the named important characters, it seems pretty clear that he has been distant to Annie, figuratively and literally. If her interactions with Aly are any indication, she really has a lot of crap to work through.

I wonder if Anja knows that Mort is a ghost? Jones knows about Mortimer. Whether or not Anja knows depends on how much she and Jones communicate.

Annie laughed in Chapter Six (the cherry tree scene), but other than that, she usually only smiles.
She might simply not be interested in romance because she's too interested in other things; it's hard to say. I certainly do think it likely that, as strainofthought suggested, even by the time that Annie's in her final year at Court, she'll still show no inclinations towards having a boy-friend. (Of course, there are the occasional speculations that another reason for that might be that Annie has a different orientation - though the only support for that in the webcomic so far is a certain infamous remark of Reynardine's.)

I'm not sure Annie was showing any interest at all regarding Coyote. She was most likely just being polite. Either that or just simply amused. Coyote was the one who seemed to be more interested in Annie. And it's possible to enjoy something without actually being interested in it.
If anything, she has shown more interest in other people's relations, like when Kat was in her flirting stage with Alistair.

Okay, I am absolutely NOT suggesting anything of any significance between Antimony and Coyote. I am not a shipper. I have no interest in seeing them together, and as I said before I find Coyote somewhat creepy. I kind of expected somebody would misinterpret what I meant about Antimony's visit, but if you're contrasting Antimony's interactions with Aly to her visit positively, then you're completely missing my point. Read through Alistair's first day in class, from the point he meets Antimony: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=233The only thing she says to him is her name! She barely makes any eye contact; it's like she's trying to pretend he's not there. And it's not jealousy over Kat's attention or a personal dislike of him, as she speaks positively of Kat's and Alistair's attraction to each other repeatedly later on: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=245Contrast Antimony with Coyote: www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=487What strikes me about this page is that she is smiling in every panel. Okay, maybe she's being polite, but if so, she's being very polite. Perhaps I should give Antimony more credit for being manipulative, I don't know. But she certainly doesn't make this effort for any of her human classmates, such as Alistair. Again, my point is not to suggest that Antimony has any romantic attraction to Coyote. My point is that she appears to be getting along with him in a way which is otherwise restricted to Kat and Mort- Robot and Shadow 2 seem to be practically talking pets. Kat is another girl and Mort is a shy ghost who bears little resemblance to a human anymore; Coyote is alive, personal-space-invasive, and regularly expresses attraction to Antimony, and she is apparently either not freaked out about this or willing to pretend not to be. And like I said, that is "the closest thing to interest in a guy I can recall Annie openly expressing". Which is, you know, still pretty far from actually expressing interest in a guy, but there you go- Antimony is a strange girl living in a strange world.

I probably should have gone with the word "intrigue" rather than "interested". Yeah, that sounds about right. She's more intrigued by others relations.

Fact: Annie used to hear stories about Coyote from Surma.
Speculation: So, in spite of all the warnings from the Court staff, she sees Coyote as an old friend of her mum's first and foremost. So Annie feels like she already knows him, and she's naturally going to be more friendly with him than with some boy she doesn't know at all.

Well, Coyote is a god. Even without considering that his charisma (in D&D-speak) is probably in the 30+ range and he can be pretty charming and funny when he want, it is always wise (to not mention polite) to to not look like you are bored when you are with a god. That he knew her mother probably helped, too.

Especially don't look bored around a trickster god. They will unbore you. This is not always a good thing.
