"Any body that was not his own..."
I assumed Reynardine's original body died when he left it the first time, but does this mean it could still be out there?
Also, there's something oddly poignant about Ysengrin in this page.

So he DID know the consequences. He must have loved Surma so much that any sacrifice was worth it. I wonder if Renard's old body is still lyin' around somewhere. The way it's worded implies that he could return to his body at will. Whether it's worth going back to is another issue.

Ysengrin looks almost peaceful (or at least non-wrathful) in that fifth panel. Almost makes you feel sorry for the guy for an instant. Coyotegoat must have been a real spectacle.

It's also suspicious that Coyote's gifts are only perfect until he gives them to someone else.

Reynardine's symbol is slightly different from Coyote's. Impure element?

Someone who is not of divine status cannot handle divine power. But actually I'm still suspicious of Coyote here, too. His way of saying things... "for some reason" doesn't neccessarily mean he's not perfectly aware of those reasons.
As for Isegrimm, I think deep down in his heart he has regrets, too. Maybe not now while he's still drunk of all the power he gained, but at some point he'll relaise at what cost it came.

I suppose The powers are only perfect if used by the original user. If Coyote gives them to others, Its no longer in a perfect state.
I also surmize, maybe Coyote did give it to them right. They just have to master it. Reyn could infact leave a body in-tact, he just has to learn how. And Iseg could probably stop shaking if he learned how to relax? =P

This is beginning to make me see why Reyn can be such a jackass sometimes--he went out on a limb, probably got burned, and then wound up tricked and locked up. Anyone who goes through that probably has more than a few defenses, not the least of which could be a certain biting sarcasm.
As for the "tricked" part...My theory is that Sivo made the sacrifice to get Rey to possess him, so they could lock him up. Eggers would've known his capabilities well enough from knowing Sivo.
As for Ys, looks like he too realizes the price at which this gift from Coyote comes.
Words of advice for Annie: Do NOT accept any sort of gift from Coyote!!

Someone needs to fanart Coyotegoat.
Other than that, most of my thoughts have already been mentioned; it all boils down to "sucks to be Rey." I wonder if Annie will be having a talk with him when she gets back, or if she'll still maintain a chilly distance. Hmm...
And as for Ys...being a sycophant never ends well.

Now, we don't exactly know when Reynardine killed that man, but Eglamore stated that Reynardine had taken over Sivo's body about 5 years ago. To fit your theory then Reynardine would have had to murder that young man when Annie was about 6 years old or we would have to assume Reynardine was free for years after the murder. I assumed Reynardine's original body died when he left it the first time, but does this mean it could still be out there? Nobody knows why Ysengrin built a chimney in the middle of the forest, or where he got that comfortable recliner and pipe, but everyone recognizes the fur carpet he placed on the ground.

I wonder what's going through Reynardine's head as he looks down at the rabbit's body. Remorse? (Though if so, it wasn't enough to stop him from possessing that young man afterwards, knowing what the consequences would be.)

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that Coyote set up Reyardine to fail, to be captured. The scenario where Rey had been checking Coyote's offer for divine powers up to the point where he succumbed... possibly to be closer to Surma, is just too much like the Judeo-Christian temptation myths to pass off as coincidence. Whether it was personal (apparently Surma was quite a catch for man and god alike) or part of a larger plan would be an interesting revelation.
And anyway, can you trust a grin like that? Coyote is definitely spinning things the way a god would: no remorse, no sense of responsibility. The tribulations of lesser beings is just entertainment for a trickster god, bored out of his gourd by vapid eternity.

Well, Coyote already failed creating his own humans and ended up with a bunch of shadows instead. I got the impression that he is powerfull but clumsy. He screws up everything but keeps on going anyway, because he's a trickster. I think he knew that his gifts won't work 100%, but really didn't know why or what the results would be.
<coyote>But that's what makes it fun, eh? AHAHAHAHA!!</coyote>

Noticed a little detail.
Renard's eyes used to be green, in flashbacks that show him before recieving the power.
In this strip, his eyes are now yellow. The same color as his spirit when he jumps from eyes to eyes.

The only strip which shows his eyes open is www.gunnerkrigg.com/archive_page.php?comicID=495, page 21, and the eyes are too small to be able to discern whether they are green or yellow. Can you point to a better example? Ben

Rey's a brilliant judge of character. "What's the best way to win the heart of this sweet girl? I know! I'll kill someone close to her and possess their body! That couldn't possibly fail to impress her!"
I suspect walkingdust is right: some harm befell Rey's original body, and that's why his soul is currently nomadic.

Maybe Reynardine didn't plan on Surma (or anyone else) finding out that he was now housed in the young man's body.

this is just some not-so-wild speculation here but I think that after Rey killed the man, the court imprisoned his body which caused him to possess Sivo.

Or the Court imprisoned him for possessing that man in the first place, but they got careless and let Renard possess Sivo.Edit: Oh, wait, he was imprisoned because he killed that man. Nevermind, then.

He obviously regained control of his fox body after possessing the animals in the first panel, so my theory is that he possessed Sivo, got imprisoned, and was unable to regain control of his body, which was destroyed or else could not survive for so long without him.

Well now there's an explanation for that "crossed out" eye icon both in Reynardine's prison when he was Sivo and why Anja wears one. Eyes Which Cannot Be Possessed. That's probably why Reyn couldn't get out, much as he wanted. All anyone visiting had to do was keep their eyes shielded, be it by turbans, sunglasses (do we even know whether those work? Probably not...) or whatnot. Actually I wonder if that old trick Perseus used to keep from getting turned to stone by Medusa would've worked on Reyn--does his possession method work on reflected images? In which case mirror-shiny sunglasses would probably be THE awesomest weapon to use against Reyn.

Chapter three showed Reynardine facing Eglamore sans eye protection, so there's probably other ways of disrupting the body-snatching etheric powers. That, or as many hypothesize, even then Reynardine was hesitant to kill Sivo and doom even his most vocal detractor.

It was shown a few pages later that Rey's firefox body still has to physically travel the distance between bodies; Eglamore could have just closed his eyes; after all, he saved Annie by tackling her out of the way.
