Link.Interesting to see this whole thing through the eyes of the Forest (compared to Jones's description of it from earlier). Makes me wonder if we'll see a Court-aligned explanation complete the set in a later chapter. Oh, and Coyote's vanity is downright cute.

Looks like there was some Court infrastructure stranded on the forest side. That sounds like an interesting story down the line. Maybe the origin of the Tic Tocs?

There's also lots of forest on the court side. Hm. Guess it took a while for the two extremes to be completely separated.
Coyote having such immense power makes me wonder why he's bothering hanging out around here; if I had to guess, I'd say it's to avoid boredom.

Backstory ho! Although I have to wonder if this is true.....
I really want to know what that blue light is- is it supposed to be symbolic or was/is there actually a place light that somewhere? Maybe the power station is built top of it, which is where the big energy beam comes from.
I completely missed that.
We don't know when Diego was around, but this seems to indicate that the Annan waters were created relatively recently.

Coyote's story raises the question of who's telling the truth. Reynardine and Jones both suggested earlier that the Court retreated across the Annan to keep out the forest-folk. Coyote's account is the reverse: he created the river to protect the forest from the Court, whose inhabitants were trying to capture and enslave the forest-folk.

I'm wondering whether there's a place in the forest which is a counterpoint to the power station in the Court. It'd probably be an "etheric" essence of some sort, or perhaps something that connects the Court and the forest.
Klex: Wow, nice find! I didn't notice at first, but yes, that's him! Or at least someone resembling the "bull" bot. The bismuth symbol is also there.
Edit: Coyote's jagged teeth struck me as.. irregular, emphasizing the "distraught" feel with his claw cutting through the land.

That's the alchemical symbol for bismuth, and I think it's just the symbol of the court, not etheric power. Is it just me, or is the relatively big (and supposedly human) figure in panel 2 somewhat familiar?... |

For the first time I notice the eye in the 'logo' (for lack of a better word, native speakers plz help me out). It's very much the eye that we have seen with a bar through it earlier in the court.

The third panel reminds me again how Coyote isn't actually a playful doggie that happens to have supernatural powers, but rather a supernatural power that happens to look like a playful doggie. :o)

I can see a resemblance, but only in the "head". The figure has a definite human frame, complete with hands and feet. Bull bot does not. Unless... Reynardine said the Bull bot represented something involving Jeanne's death, which is why S1 was programmed to kill it. Perhaps this figure, whoever it is, is supposed to be represented by the Bull bot? Could this person be Jeanne's true killer? Also, Coyote's hand in the third panel are very freaky. |

it is interesting how he has a hand in the third panel when most of the time he has dainty little paws. the hand does indeed look capable of smiting a huge crack in the earth.

It's pretty interesting that we can see Diego in the second panel. I totally missed that Diego, that studmuffin, made a cameo. If Coyote divided the world along the Annan, is it reasonable to consider that he, or one of the other Canidae gods, killed Jeanne on the forest side, preventing her ghost from crossing? Diego's robot play antagonist does have dog-like stature, though no clear markings that finger Coyote, although their legs share a similar band pattern near the feet. Imagine Diego on the court side, unable to help her, only able to watch. |

from what i see, coyote scratched in the annan waters and the ravine not as any rational divide, cuz i see forest in the court side and buildings on the forest side.
As for Jeanne being killed on the forest side. im not sure. As i remember it, Annie fell and was on the side of the forest. Jeanne was across the river from her. doesnt that mean she was on the Court side of the Annan waters?

Could it be that Jeanne fought with Coyote and was killed by an attack that created the chasm? Bullbot represents an animal, maybe the scripted fight between robot and bullbot refers to that duel. It could also explain why she is down there. Maybe psychopomps can't carry off spirits that were slain by a god. Edit: ha. After reading earlier comments I see that my remark adds nothing new to the remarks made by Ding. Ding: good thinking! |

The story of how the ravine came to be and the story about the court retreating from the forest might both be true. Perhaps it started with the forest preying on the humans, forcing them to retreat over the waters (which might have been a river) from there they established a base and gradually grew stronger, at which time they set out to tame the forest. Coyote comes along, and strikes a chasm, but being lazy he uses a naturally occuring divide as a headstart?
Coyote doesn't lie afterall.

Diego's clothing seems Victorian at the earliest (a black tuxedo-style jacket, if I recall). That seems surprisingly late for the chasm to be created, but the person in the picture might not be Diego - just someone who resembles him. (Kind of like the case in Chapter Fifteen when a lot of people thought that one of the boys in the school assembly scene was Alistair.) Gunnerkrigg's industrial-style architecture suggests a relatively recent founding date, though that raises the question about why the humans who founded the Court were exiles. If it was in an earlier period of history than the 19th - say, during the Middle Ages - their pursuit of science and technology might have seemed like witchcraft to their frightened neighbors, and they could have been fleeing to avoid being arrested and put to death. But such a state of affairs is less likely in the 1800's. Of course, there might have been other reasons for their seeking shelter in Gillitie Wood than their pursuit of science - maybe they were on the losing side in a political struggle, for example. |

The idea that Coyote killed Jeanne is interesting.
Loking back on it, I think the bullbot actually looks more like Sivo- take away the horns and back spike things and they have a very similar body shape- same stubby head, thick neck and body etc.
Sivo did make a different noise to the bullbot ("Aroooo" versus "Hooooh") but then again, one is mechanical and the other organic, and "Sivodine" was injured wheras bullbot was angry (apparently).

I wonder if Surma met Reynardine during her visits to the forest, back when he was still a talking fox. Nobody at the Court (apart from Annie and Kat, of course) seems aware of the link between Surma and Reynardine; there's no evidence that Eglamore and the Donlans know about it, for example. If their meetings took place in the Wood rather than the Court, that would explain why.
I assume that Reynardine didn't lose his body and start housing himself in other peoples' bodies until after Surma's time at Gunnerkrigg (I don't think that Surma would have approved of such behavior). Incidentally, I suspect that Sivo wasn't Reynardine's first victim; there must have been others before that, in order for Eglamore to know that the people whom Reynardine possesses die after he hops out of their bodies. (I don't know if I've mentioned this before or not, but I wonder if the Mystery Girl from the photograph was one of those previous victims. Certainly, if she's dead, it would explain why we haven't heard anything from her at the Court so far.)

I'm beginning to now wonder--thanks to this speculation here--if Reynardine was one of the causes of that squabble. Coyote doesn't mention between whom the squabble was. It's entirely possible the humans tried to tame Reynard, caused him to lose his body, and as a result, had him as a persistent body-possessing problem for a while. Only that he began to respect certain humans over that time, and Surma was one of them.
