I decided to read the comic over again so I'd understand a little better. Page SixIs it ever explained why Shadow 2 could not cross the Annan waters? There's lots of shaded areas, unless he's afraid of water...

Kat later finds out that he is made of a thin layer of some substance. So he'd probably be torn apart or dissolve in water - either way, staying on top of the water's surface is probably impossible.

But he doesn't have to touch the water.... He could stay against the rocks...like a mountain climber or something.

Etheric means: He just can't okay?
Hah, I don't know if there's a better explanation, but if there is it'll probably be explored eventually.

But Shadow has to constantly be on a surface. He cant just "Hop" from rock to rock or branch. Think of Shadow like a snake. Hes going to touch everything he travels on. Therfore, the only way to go through a river is though a 1 piece solid Bridge. Not rocks that are scattered a few inches in the water.

It might be a variant of how many etheric (to use the webcomic's term) beings can't cross running water.
Of course, much of it stems from the needs of the story. If Shadow2 could get across the river on his own, he wouldn't have needed Annie's help, Annie wouldn't have rebuilt Robot and sent him across the bridge, etc.

But how can he have been projected on the wall when Annie shines the lamp behind her? He doesn't have to hop from rock to rock, just slink against the wall. All the other theories make sense too. I have a hard time accepting something in a story that was "just because" It worked for the story. I don't see much of that happening in Gunnerkrigg Court.

He doesn't have to hop from rock to rock, just slink against the wall. What wall have you managed to find that stretches all the way across the Annan Waters? That got me thinking, though — doesn't the bridge have sides, and a bottom? Which might not be as well-lit as the top of it.

I wondered about that - I guess the reason why he can't use the underside of the bridge is that he first has to get there somehow.

Oh yes, that would make sense. In Annie's words, "Shadow 2 was barely able to venture outside without me providing cover under foot." (Missed that somehow.)

The sides are well lit due to the placing of the lamps. As for the bottom, these shadows may not be able to stick to ceilings.
