Okay, that last panel in conjunction with the YouTube clip? is pretty freaking hilarious.

I am overcome by the majesty of coyotes howling. My goodness me.
Coyote doesn't seem all too broken up. The question is...is his laughter his ability to not take himself overly seriously, or is he somehow FORCED to laugh all the time?
He IS the trickster.

From left to right, I think the constellations are Scorpio, Cygnus, and Cassiopeia... I think. It's been a while since I've had a good look at them.
EDIT: Whoops, I missed the one at the top for a moment there. Not sure about that one.
I could just hear the barking as soon as I looked at the last panel! Just fantastic. XD There are many areas in the Canadian prairies where they go absolutely nuts at night, and it often sounds like they're less than a kilometre away from town.

You'd think that a guy with Coyote's ego would have remembered to put up a constellation of himself - would have done that before he made all the other constellations, in fact.
And it's probably just as well for him that Cassiopeia wasn't within earshot - I don't think she'd have been amused at being included among "the Great Beasts".
Given all the talk about the importance of eyes in this comic, it's appropriate that the Great Spirit would be depicted the way he is on this page.

That's a good point, Todd. Perhaps -- given how ADD this manifestation of Coyote is sounding -- he wasn't really thinking about it, and was just making constellations out of whatever he happened to lay eyes on. We're lucky he was looking around the heavens at the Great Beasts and Archetypal Figures, or we might be graced with constellations like The Rock, The Tree, The Coyote Turd, and The Other Tree.

I am not familiar with the myth, but it looks as if Coyote gets thrown down on Earth, instead of 'being bored with menial tasks'

I have a feeling that when Coyote's not laughing at something, that means either a) the world's about to end, so pack your bags and head for the bunker (the Court's got to be full of them), or b) he's really about to mess with your head. Either way, it's a good indicator, I would think. Now I'm curious if those are all constellations listed by Ptolemy of Alexandria, or if he threw a more modern one in...shall have to look that up.

The three constellations we see on the page (as Myrani pointed out) are Scorpio the Scorpion, Cygnus the Swan, and Cassiopeia - all three constellations that go back to ancient Greece (and so would be mentioned by Ptolemy). I don't recognize the constellation that the Great Spirit was working on: it might be just something Tom made up for the page rather than a real one.

I hate to pop your bubble, but the way Tom expressed it in the last panel doesn't leave much room for majesty. I'm afraid he does sound quite like a regular coyote, except perhaps a bit louder.

I see Coyote not as a malicious trickster, but more someone prone to acts of extreme goofiness when you least expect it. Mostly this is from the stories, and the way he talks about himself. He has an ego, but doesn't seem the least bit nasty. Probably is a little manipulative for the sake of preserving his ego where concerned. And him screwing up with the stars is perfectly suited to that type of ADD/hyperactive personality that doesn't stay stuck with any one thing. If anything, he probably didn't mind if the gods assigned him more menial tasks as long as they were enjoyable and fun. And given how he seems quite at home in the forest...well, you never know. Maybe he's just one of those Cosmic Class Clowns?

Maybe he's just one of those Cosmic Class Clowns? I see Coyote as the Trickster. He doesn't seem malicious now, but if he were, and didn't want to appear as such, would he? And if he were, would he want to appear as such? Nothing we've seen of him so far can be taken as evidence one way or the other. Notice how Tom always draws him with prominent teeth. I don't necessarily think he's what would be conventionally called bad -- Gunnerkrigg Court doesn't dwell in that style of storytelling -- but I assume he won't turn out to be all sunshine and roses, and I think it's underestimating him to assume he's just a class clown. He's running a con of some sort, and I'm really looking forward to seeing it play out. I'm sure Antimony knows it, too. But the other thing about tricksters is, they're often enjoyable company. As long as it's his nature to be the Trickster, and as long as she keeps her guard about her, there's no reason she can't enjoy his company in the meantime.

In stories about coyote that I have heard, he is rarely if ever malicious. I don't see him as outwardly trying to harm anything.

I don't think the proper word for Coyote would be malicious. Dangerous is more like it, neutral in our human moral-sense.
Also, I don't think he has an ego the way us humans see it. He is a demi-god of some power. Can you imagine a demi-god who is all shy and modest? What purpose would that serve?

Stephenls, very eloquently said. I very much agree with you. But that doesn't mean he can't have his oddball, quirky moments that defy any sort of seriousness. He doesn't seem like one to let his serious side out unless something very bad was going on or had happened. Perhaps Surma's death was one of those things? Unless that's a ploy. Also agreed about his neutral alignment. Best way to describe him to me? Quirky Neutral. Anybody who's seen Star Trek might remember the demi-god Q. He was of a similar mindset, but some episodes had him using his "trickster" side to hide a serious lesson. See the episode "Q Who?" for a prime example of when he can be both mischevious and wise at once....
